I am always looking to hone my skills and become a better pilot with every flight, so if there are any high time commercial pilots who see this video I'd love any constructive feedback you may have so that I can become better!
After each circuit I did my own pilot debrief and put my personal comments on the screen. Please comment on the video on what you agree with, or what suggestions you may have in addition to the ones I made.
In this video I took my PA38-112 Piper Tomahawk to Medicine Hat, Alberta to practice soft field landings and takeoffs in some windy/gusty conditions. You'll see scenic views of the beautiful city of Medicine Hat and see the beautiful handling characteristics of the Piper Tomahawk while tackling the drift illusions associated to flying in windy conditions.

Perry, this video really shows the level of proficiency you've achieved with your plane in the time you've owned it. Very nicely done, especially given that this was your first practice on these in a while! I think all pilots should challenge themselves regularly to see just how fine an edge they can put on their skills. Another great video! Hopefully it inspires a few others to go practice these techniques themselves.

Thank you! The Tomahawk flies so well and it's very stable landing in higher winds. I look forward to flying more with you 👊

4th circuit was definitely best, oh and you're now current for the next 90 days after the 3rd circuit. 😁

My goal is 100 hours per year so thankfully I stay quite current. I did have to pile on a bunch of night flying (and takeoffs and landings) recently just for getting current on night stuff. I don't do a lot of night flying up here in Canada during the winter

Nice video as always Perry. One day I will narrate and edit my videos as well. I did some flying last week and picked up some ice from the snow being kicked up by the tires....just posted one of my gusty crosswind landings.

Thank you! I just checked out your video. That's a solid landing. Those trees must generate a lot of turbulence when it's windy!

I have a tomahawk and often widen my turn on base when in a cross wind and keep my airspeed up with little or no rudder depending the direction of the cross wind . your wind was only ten degrees but gusting can get you into an unstable approach . I should try keeping the nose off like this - nice job

Thank you! It's a good exercise for soft field landings....I keep my nose wheel off the ground as long as possible on normal landings anyways just to be gentle on the oleo.

Did you stabilize your video to the horizon? It looks super cool, not sure I've seen anyone else do that. Took some time for my brain to adjust though. I thought it was fake at first. Keep up the great work.

Thank you! There's an image stabilization feature in the GoPro that I had turned on and seems to lock to the horizon rather than the wing. I agree it's a neat look

Hi Perry. Awesome photography, editing, and commentary.! I love how the image stabilization processes the video. I very much appreciate you making these videos. I should be taking delivery on my own Tomahawk in a few weeks. I will see if I can match your deft control of gentle touchdowns and elevator control once I get used to the plane. I would be interested to know a few things in comments or future video..... What GoPro mount are you using to attach to wing? Is it the standard GoPro lens or a wider angle 180 degree lens? What mount for your iPad are you using in this video? and which size iPad is it? Do you find it is intruding on your windshield vision or pretty much out of the way? I am weighing the pro's and con's of wheel mount vs. kneeboard mount vs. windshield mount. Looking forward to your next video.

Thank you! You will have a great time with your Tomahawk. I am very happy I bought one. As for the GoPro mounts, the ones I use were purchased from Aircraft Spruce made for aircraft use. The exterior one I use most is made to clamp onto tie-down rings and has secondary securement pins so nothing can unscrew. I have another one made by NFlightCam that is made to use one of the screw positions for a wing fairing (wind tunnel tested and FAA compliant). My interior ones use the RAM ball mount and clamp system. As for the iPad, I'm using a very old and cheap iPad Mini 2 and mounted with the RAM suction cup and ball mount system but I am looking to upgrade to a newer Mini and get Foreflight. I think anything larger than a Mini will take up too much room in the cockpit. As it stands, I have juggled the positioning between mounting on my yoke, knee pad, copilot side of panel, and the left side of the windscreen. I like the windscreen best because it doesn't block my vision and doesn't require a large head movement to incorporate looking at the iPad in my instrument scans. I don't like the yoke mount much because I don't like the feel of the extra weight on the controls. I flew my first 150 hours mostly reliant on paper sectionals strapped to my knee and had the iPad tucked away on the copilots side but am just starting to bring the electronics more into the game.
