Cisco is right near Moab, Utah. There's a back road you can take through Cisco if you're coming from the east (Colorado) on Interstate 70. If you drive around you can tell that someone still lives there. It wouldn't be too difficult to ask for an interview at that point (although there's a lot of aggressive signs in town essentially saying "fuck off, outsiders are not welcome here", but I haven't been back in two years).

You literally can see Cisco, Utah if you are taking Amtrak through Utah to Grand Junction, CO. I remember passing through it and there were quite a few cars there. It still looked really run down but there seemed to be a surprising amount of people living there. I'm assuming Eileen has gone ahead and made the place livable enough for people to want to move in.

Sometimes isolation can feel so incredible. It's indescribable. Like being in touch with yourself. But I've only ever hiked to isolated places for a few days, a week at most. Once was a vision quest and spent four days without food, right on the Utah border. Desert water does have a funny taste, even after filtering.

Getting away/keeping to yourself/ making a conscious choice to be distant, doesn't seem like isolation to me. Cause when you're actively doing things, creative things that most would either frown at, be bored with or can't see the same big picture that you can......allows you to see bigger and even more amazing pictures to bring to fruition. Company isn't the same anymore. As most desire to do the same things that others do, ie: drink, party, drink, hook up and just get turned out by repeating the same cycles that turn them into a bore. Meanwhile they'll see those that differ to be boring. It's actually a breath of fresh air to be away from folk and things that your mind rejects. As it's impossible to see and paint the big pictures that you can see.......on an array of levels.

Wow. I live solo. Isolated in the mountains of NM. My existence is similar, although not nearly as dangerous as hers. I don’t have to deal with lesbian hate. I’m a white female in a population of Hispanics. Many, understandably, dislike white people, their culture...everything about us. Many don’t want me here. I get it. I respect it. I do have to say the ones that have befriended me, are SOLID. You’re not just a friend, you’re blood. The drunk haters...it’s Cowboy Culture here, too. I watch my back. Id love to stop by her town and help out for a couple weeks. share some stories of being a self reliant female in the middle of nowhere. I’m not nearly as good at construction, but Ill learn. She needs some damn flowers growing in her town anyway. That and a bright coat of paint on an outbuilding or two... then curious people would know it’s not abandoned. She’d benefit from a few trail cams as well. No use in a security system. Trail cams wud give her the upper hand. It’s just frustrating. We cause no harm, want no trouble, we ask very little from anyone & help everyone. The irony is trouble not only finds us, but I swear, seeks us out. I have come to breath a sigh of relief at the sound of a bear at my back door, preferring it any day over something on two feet. I now travel using Amtrak due to a terminal disability. (Southwest Chief) I was actually wondering if any of the Amtrak trains went past her town. I can’t believe someone actually posted that it did! Now I just have to find her address to write her. I doubt she has cell service. Who knows?😂

Natalie Rozean My family lived in a pretty remote mountain area when I was growing up and you’re 100% right: humans are by FAR the most dangerous part about living in the backwoods. Drugs, domestic abuse and sex crimes against women and children were rampant, and in the truly remote areas if you stumbled across hunters or other off grid folks you had to give them a very wide berth as *many* had bad intentions. Us kids all knew how to safely use weapons for both hunting and defense and carried them whenever we weren’t right near the house. We were lucky to be schooled from home and mom had the rifles and shotgun on standby. I was friends with a little girl that lived up closer to the highway, she ended up being raped three times before her 18th birthday, once by a family member and twice by local indigents when she was walking to a bus pickup spot for the school, about two miles from her house. Her parents treated her like there was something wrong with HER and strongly discouraged her from “raising a fuss” and reporting it. There’s beauty in wild places like that but it can be extremely harsh on women and girls. So many people treat them like things to be used and discarded out there.

@natalierozean5989 4 жыл бұрын
redmanish I couldn’t have said that better myself. While living in an isolated area is peaceful & beautiful, there is always that cautious anxiety lurking in the back of your mind. Isolated places are ALSO where people (females mainly) are taken to commit crimes...and disposed of afterward, never to be seen or heard from again. I’ve prepared myself to the best of my capabilities as I live out here solo. I could write a novel about the horrible human related experiences I’ve had out here. I’ve honestly taken a nap upstairs only to wake up to the sight of a 20something yr old man standing in my bedroom door way watching me sleep! His excuse? He thought it was the home his friend, he hadn’t seen in years, lived at & he was having car trouble?! One spring evening around 2 am, I woke to someone trying to get in the back door. They weren’t being quiet about it, so I feared the worst. Im a light sleeper and very in tune to any sound out of the norm. I was caught off guard because i heard no car? (I can hear vehicles approach long before they get to my property) I tried my cell phone to get whatever branch of law enforcement that decided I was in their jurisdiction on their way. (Sometimes getting the law to respond is half the battle). Due to living in the middle of nowhere, my srvc is hit & miss. That night was no different and I wasn’t about to go outside to play “can you here me now”. Just as I made my way downstairs to look out the window, the back doof flew open. I screamed! (Startled) It Chose not to enter, rather run off. The moon gave enough light for me to see it was a med size Black Bear. I’ve never been so THANKFUL! No, it’s definitely NOT good that a bear was comfortable enough to try and get in my home, but he/she DID startle and run off easily. Sadly, that’s not saying much for mankind these days. When a 120 lb female likes her odds with a bear than a male intruder...something needs to change. I admire your mothers knowledge and bravery. Street smarts is one thing...being self sufficient off grid is another. You are TRULY on your own, no one to hear you or help you. Being able to protect yourself is one thing. Your had the courage to protect not inly herself, but her children as well! I can only imagine how terrifying that could be for her at times! To be responsible for everyone’s whereabouts and safety on a “normal” day as well as threatening situations must have been down right nerve wrecking & exhausting! Good for her that she was not only capable of using a gun, but saw to it that her children were able to use a gun for food and protection as well. In this day and age, that’s a RARE skill. What people don’t understand is rich or poor, small cabin or vacation house...mother nature and criminals don’t pick and choose. If you want to live a life out in the beautiful scenic countryside and enjoy a slice of heaven, you have to be equipped to protect yourself from the hell man is capable of.

ohshaye morrell I TRY to have internet. Lol! I’m no “wing nut” “die hard “ “off grid” on purpose girl. I just like the country...and have to figure out how to take care of myself. Like I said, even if I do get a hold of law-enforcement for help they transfer me to three different branches trying to figure out which one to respond my house. City, State Cops, or Sheriff? Then once they figure that out finding my house is a whole Other problem. I have WIFI....sometimes. I can even see a tower from my front yard, but I don’t understand. My srvc sucks. I have to go sit on top of the canyon to get service or wander around outside? Id LOVE to have srvc inside. Going outside in the middle of the night to get Srv. is inconvenient AF. Especially when it’s a bear. Lol.

I can’t imagine how scary it is to live alone in such a desolate yet open place. When I was in college I was taking night classes in a bad area of town, and often I would have to park my car far away from the building due to all the spots being taken, but when I got out around 9-10 pm the lot would be empty. That first year I bought every carrying form of pepper spray imaginable. One on my key chain, one in my car glove box, one that also set off a screeching sound and strobe light in my bag. Bless this man for arming her and looking out for her. I’m sure she felt so much better knowing she had someone close. Those Winnebago walls are thin. I’m sure she can hear the coyotes tip toeing through that thing.

Seriously though, although a little objective.. You can tell a lot about how a person is by the way they handle animals. Gentle people tend to be nice and embrace, dogs as an example. While cruel people tend to give a more rough approach. But of course, its not true. Some people are afraid of certain animals etc. But it may be something to keep in mind if you see someone handle an animal bad, most likely not a good person at all.

"It's beautiful in a way that it will kill you". Let that sink in. I was on a high cliff once. I went as close to the edge as possible (for me) But I was still probably 2 feet from the edge. That was beautiful enough, I thought. Anymore would have been amazing, but I'd probably die. I think I stay 2 feet away from alot of things in my life. Eileen is an amazing person. Not because she lives alone in the desert, not because she can fire a gun. It's because she's a kind and gentle person trying to make peace with a desolate place. Listen to her calm voice. She is a person that just knows stuff and what she doesn't know, she learns. Alot of us are living alone in a desert. We could learn alot from Eileen. First lesson- try to make peace with everything around you and what refuses to make peace with you, release.
