I had the pleasure of driving a beautifully restored silver 356 belonging to my father-in-law's friend. We were visiting his storage garage in Naples, Florida, getting a tour of his collection of vintage cars (plus one Z8). Just as we were leaving, his mechanic arrives with the 356, which had just had had some engine work done. As we were ogling it, he tosses me the keys and says "Go ahead, take for a spin." As I get in, he says "You can drive stick, right?" I shoot back, "No, but I'm sure I'll figure it out." His face was priceless. Of course, I can drive stick and spent the next 20 minutes doing laps around an empty business park. It was one of those perfect driving experiences.

Wonderful drive of the 356, Nick! I'd love to drive one, one day! The radio definitely speaks for how far technology has come and how it's used.

Lovely all Porsche, especially the classic ones. Saw one of this on the pier in Santa Barbara. Made a photo of it with the ocean as background which is so nice that nobody believes me I shot myself.

Beautiful car. Very kind of the owner to let Mr. Murray drive it. The owner seems like a very nice person, really the kind of person I would be friends with. That said, he is in some ways the stereotypical Porsche owner, as demonstrated by his listing of the number produced, the different color dash knobs of the different years, that he owns the period correct Blaupunkt radio... Again, seems like a great guy and I'm glad he is taking such good care of a wonderful car.

Nice guy to let you enjoy his joy and pride! Completely agree about the fun the feeling of speed brings. I enjoyed my Mini Cooper S and Miata more than I enjoy my 911 lately. I didn't have to take those cars to the track to get that joy of speed and the euphoria I felt. Might need to downsize to something comfortable for work, ditch the 911 and get a nice roadster of some kind. Great video and like the color of this classic. I am biased since my 911 is GR.

Easy to trace where I came to like 356s. The first highlander movie ! In 1986! When you are 12 you prefer big winged big horsepower 930s but this light small porsche always felt more like a hot hatch. It looked agile And so elegant ! Liked the m4 peeking in the first shot ! Thks for the vid..

Hi Nick, I know this video is a couple years old, but I just had to say thanks for the fun video! John has a beautiful car! The Convertible D is a rare bird. I think only the twin-grilled Roadsters are fewer in number. Similar in comfort to the Cab but still has the chrome windshield surround. Kind of an "A" Roadster. I'd love to drive an "S" some time to see the difference. I hear the Normal is better for around town with more torque in the lower RPMs and the S is more lively at higher Rs. Wow. Pretty car. Franny
@NickMurray7 жыл бұрын
Yes sadly he has sold this car now and has a 993 but it sure got everyones attention whenever he parked it anywhere!
@HeidiandFranny7 жыл бұрын
Whaaaat? No! Awww, that's to bad. Funny, the 356 and the 993 are surprisingly similar. Built to a similar audience I think. Well, I'm sure whoever bought the car treasuring it. Franny

My first, a '60 Super 1600 Roaster purchased in '66 for $2,000. BMC, Belmont. Sadly, expensive to maintain for a bellman in the Sierras that winter. (Don't continue using 30w oil. Ask me how I know.) 25,000 miles in that 13 months and i traded her for a new '67 VW with sunroof and AM/FM, straight across. Owned several other Porsches over the years though none were as "fun" as my first. Perhaps it was just being 22/ 23 years old. Never know. Would/ wouldn't trade it for my present 993 cab though (I hate putting miles on this one.) Perhaps I have learned a few lessons.

44benedicthillrd.com for more photos of the house. In New Canaan there were about 40 of these Midcentury modern houses built and only half of them survive. Architects include James Evans, Philip Johnson, Landis Gores, Marcel Breuer and of course Frank Lloyd Wright. (In a vintage shot of the FLW house there is a 356 in the driveway.)

Hi Nick - Would you mind mentioning the music you use in the description of your videos, please? As brief as they sometimes are, some of these snippets are fantastic! (BTW, what is it you used for the intro here? Which orchestra, etc.?) Cheers! :o)

@alvaro17289 жыл бұрын
Great video, thanks for sharing. It's a lovely car. I can't get over the lack of seat belts. I think I would have had them installed, just to feel a bit safer, especially on roads like this where you're inches away from a head-on collision.
@JohnEngelOfficial9 жыл бұрын
This car has plain nylon lap belts with push button release. I think that gray cloth lap belts were an aftermarket option and some of the show cars have them but I have never seen modern 3-point over-the-shoulder belts in a Convertible D and don't know how I'd install them.
@alvaro17289 жыл бұрын
John Engel Oh I see, it has lap belts. That's much better than nothing. Thanks for the response.

Hey Nick great video as always, I think your footage hasn't been de-interlaced, it's especially noticeable at high speeds, like at 8:43 , there are horizontal lines everywhere, just a thought to either film in progressive mode or de-interlace the footage before editing, you'll get even better results

i really enjoyed the vid Nick! Really great views and so smooth i love it. btw Nick if you don't mind can i ask a question? So i know you're a Helicopter Pilot? now I'm 19 thinking about the Future Career,i always loved cars! like restoring them and just work anything about cars:) but flying is one of my biggest passion like no one can take it from me. so just a little help what do you think the best way to approach this shall i say Dream? i was looking for schools and getting my PPL....but some really disappointed me:( do you know a great school around? i live in Vermont though. THANKS. and what can you tell me from you experience?
@NickMurray9 жыл бұрын
David MuscleGuy I think you might be more limited in Vermont but I am sure there are still some great schools around. Sounds strange but I have found flying a lot of simulators before taking even my first lesson to be a great help. I knew so much about navigation and the types and layout of aircraft that I was able to focus more on the flying than the study when the time came.
@vk11269 жыл бұрын
Simulators help a lot. I'm a fixed wing pilot and sims helped a lot for me. Good luck and safe flying

Hello Nick, I would like to ask you a couple of questions if you dont mind. You said you were a helicopter pilot. Are you doing it for living or is it just a hobbie? Also do you have a plane licence? And another question: are you planning do some Asian cars review? I mean GTR r43, rx-7, you know, classic ricers :D there is not many good reviews on YT. And also are you going to do some classic US muscle cars? Since I am from Europe and you can not see too many of them here? It is something that would interest me a lot. :)
