I love that he kept his car for so long. That's the kind of relationship I want with my cars. I learned to drive on my dad's '01 Sienna and even though it's a minivan I've decided that I will never allow it to be sold. I'm going to do a little bit of work on it and make it into a nice long distance interstate cruiser and keep it running as long as I'm running.

Tom was very proud to show Pollie off during the Monterey weekend and he is truly a GREAT car guy! As an FYI, that was me behind the wheel of all the classics in the promo spots we ran before the January premiere of the show. Everything from the 1961 750 Spider Veloce to the 1958 Ferrari 250 TDF (that one was a PARTICULARLY good day at the office)

He is quite correct about one thing; Roadster is a great college guy car. I had one until I got a '64 SC IN 1969. Roadsters weighed 1,940 lbs. it had decambered rear suspension and would four wheel drift with ease. Mine didn't leak but the heater didn't work. I found I could get home from college in 90 minutes whether I drove 65 or 50. I still drive Porsches slowly.

4 cam engine ?!! I'm sorry but you are wrong, that's not a Fuhrmann 4 cam Carrera engine, but a 90 HP 1.6 liters pushrod one.

You are correct, coming from another 356 owner, kind of odd hearing him blatantly give the wrong info on his car

+Swurlis World He knew amazingly little about the car. I could have told the crankshaft end play limit.

I guess I am late to this video. I owned a 1960 Roadster from 1977 until 1983. 1600 Normal with 60 DIN hp. The Super was 75 DIN hp and the Super 90 was 90 DIN hp. I was aghast that this guy didn't know from a 4 cam Carrera engine. Nor the weight, even ballpark. A Lotus Elan weighed more than 1100 lbs. I paid $3900 for mine in '77. While I owned it, I had it repainted in the original eggshell white (the previous owner had cheaply redone it in a pale yellow) and rebuilt the engine. The pistons were replaced with higher compression Super pistons and I replaced the leaking Solex carbs with Webers. A noticeable improvement in performance but never a "fast" car. I sold it to a friend in '83 who had totalled his '59 Convertible D for $8500. He was an experienced metal man. It had rust in the battery tray and the floorboards. He took the entire car down to the bare metal and repaired all the rust. He was talented and brave enough to redo it black. I saw it when it was done and it was gorgeous, not a ripple to be found. In my opinion, the 356 Roadster, incorporating the "T" body of the B series (more of Porsche's weird designations), is the most beautiful of the entire 356 series. I miss that car and to satisfy my lust for that lightweight open car "go cart" on the street, in 2016 I bought a beautiful one-owner 2006 NC Miata.

If you have a roadster that weighs 1100 pounds, I suggest that someone has made off with your engine and transmission.

Great video. duPont reminds quite a lot of David Letterman: dead-pan delivery, sudden but controlled laughter, formal even when relaxed. Pretty similar mannerisms.

My Roadster, a 1960, Super 90 made 90 hp all else being equal, with just less than 1600cc and one cam, hemi head/ valve configuration... Did not like 30 weight oil in the winter at Squaw Valley as the crack in the oil filter mounting flange (attested). Bill Stremmel in Reno, tore her down, did a bit of heliarcing and reassembled for several hundred dollars. Seriously. I bought her the summer of 1966 for $2,000. and traded straight across for a new (sunroof) black VW (am-fm radio too) the following summer having enjoyed her a lot as over 25000 miles was clocked up that year. That's the one I was WAY too young to appreciated as I should have. Never gotten over her!

Porsche specified 30 wt oil regardless of conditions. Mine didn't care for 40 wt Quaker Stare Racing in the winter. Mine was a Super and got 43 mpg in the mountains and less than 1 mpg in SCCA autocrosses.

Actually, they had "semi hemi" or quarter hemispherical combustion chambers. Had you bought your Roadster in December like I did mine in '67 you probably could have gotten it for $1,600. I got my Super Roadster for $1,200. I was supposed to get a Speedster for the Christmas of '67. I was so glad the guy didn't show up with it. I wanted a B or C with raised headlights and improved suspension.

The B Roadster is still my favorite all timer. the Super 90 part came out when "Ron ? VW " in San Bruno checked vin and engine numbers. I thought I had a Super 1600 with the Zenith carbs. Pretty sure I was right and they wrong looking back. Bought it at Belmont BMC. for $2000. Traded after the 25000 miles & just a year of driving it, for a new VW listed at $1950+/- Worst deal of my life looking back. The 993 Tip S Carrera cab I've now is a wonderful car. I just worry about it too much but that's clearly age related.(MY age!@) I just should drive the pants off her and let my estate worry about depreciation...

Lovely car but how does the publisher of the duPont Registry have so many facts and figures wrong about the car such as its weight and the number of camshafts/existence of pushrods?

I purchased a 356B Roadster new in 1960, replacing my Austin Healey. I remember that blue. The colour of my car was Rubinrot or Ruby Red which I did not particularly like. Yes ! They didn't have a radio and had rubber mats not carpet. The car has gone to heaven but I still have the ignition key with PORECHE engraved on it. Nice memories. Mine was right hand drive 1600cc & only a handful imported to Australia.

You didn't have to be a trust fund baby to drive a 356 in college. I drove a 64 356 SC through my college years. Courted my now wife in the car as well. graduated in 1967. My college room mate always had a speedster to drive and usually paid around 1500-2000 for some nice ones. Guess he should have kept them.

Swurlis World I think you missed the point of the comment (watch video again) and you're also forgetting about inflation. Also, the MSRP for most of them back then was around $3,500-$4,500 (i.e. around $40,000 in todays money).
