A couple of weeks back Dan changed all the bushes and ball joints on the front suspension, we couldn't change the "tuning fork" arms as my supplier sent the wrong ones! Now we have the right ones and now we can change them. Enjoy

Enjoy your vids, Paul, they're very informative. Do me a favor and keep making them -- by eliminating the chance of being crushed by the car! you make me nervous just watching when you yank on bolts and the whole car's wobbling on that scissor jack...

Hi, I will try to keep making the videos, I have very heavy work commitments at the moment, and I will try not to scare you too much, but you got to have some suspense! Now, where did I put the twilight zone music?

Thank you for a great video. it took the mystery out of the process. I especially enjoyed all the sound effects while you were working. Hammers, air-guns, trucks coming and going, squealing brakes, dogs barking, a cat meowing, the only thing missing was a siren and sea-gulls.

Thanks for watching, I'm glad it was of some help to you, sorry about all the back ground noises, unfortunately life goes on,. It would be so nice to have a studio, well I would happily settle for a garage, but thats not going to happen in the near future. I have tried music and voice overs, but I'm not to good with them, yes people moan about the music. So still trying to find something in between. Did a video on the brakes a few weeks back and about an hour and a half in bloody builders turn up across the road and started making a racket, some you win and some you don't, thanks again for watching and supporting the channel

Paul1962 I’m just ribbing you about it. Ive made some training videos for my team and it seems that my 2 Siamese cats and 2 hounds have a keen sense when I start to shoot. They start running around the house making all sorts of ruckus. My staff says it’s actually comic relief to hear it in the background. Cheers!

Interesting video as usual with Paul. For those who (in doing this work) have noticed colors on the coil spring and on the shock absorber, here is the meaning. Color on top of spring: indicates required coil plate thickness through color markings on upper section of coil spring: White line = 3.0 mm spring plate (996 343 511 00) ; Green line = 6,5 mm spring plate (996 343 511 01). Color on the bottom of the spring: indicates spring rates and lenghts by line markings on the lower section of the spring. blue/yellow (1997 - 2004) 5-speed manual blue/white (1997 - 2004) 5-speed automatic red/brown (1997 - 2002) 5-speed manual / Sport yellow/brown (2003 - 2004) 5-speed manual / Sport red/white (1997 - 2002) 5-speed automatic / Sport yellow/white (2003 - 2004) 5-speed automatic / Sport violet/yellow (2000 -2004) S / 6-speed manual violet/white (2000 - 2004) S / 5-speed automatic orange/brown (2000 - 2004) S / 6-speed manual / Sport orange/white (2000 - 2004) S / 5-speed automatic / Sport 1999 = 986 343 531 01(front) 986 333 531 04(rear) Color on strut body: Blue dot = standard suspension; Red dot = sport suspension.

Thanks Paul. Ive done a bit of reading online to suggest that i need to change my fork arms aswell. Are you able to describe the sound you were getting which lead to the fork arms being replaced? For me it is the rear end which is making a knock/crunch noise when going over bumpy ground such as cobblestones at low speeds.

Hi Paul, thanks for the video, I enjoyed it. What are the symptoms for a bad "tuning fork" lower control arm? AND I have to say, you made me nervous working under the car with no wheel chocks and only a scissor jack :o No good!
@Paul1962
@Paul1962 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Clint, main symptoms for any suspension components are clonking and knocking noises, also sloppy tired handling, dose the car feel old? with older and/or high mileage cars I tend to replace all the bush's and joints, 1, they've done there tour of duty and its only a matter of time before they give trouble and B, it gives the car that nice new tight feel. my father always used to say "Tour of duty is 100,000 miles, so note the mileage when you change a part" , of cause modern car can easily exceed this but its still a good rule of thumb. sorry about the jack, old hobbits die hard, plus no axle stands at the time, that's another long story I wont go into, lol

Hi Paul I will be doing this job so very informative, just a point did you just use a scissor jack? i don't see any other form of support. Even when I use axle stands If the wheel is off I put it under the car just in case the worst happens
@Paul1962
@Paul1962 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, I used a scissor to lift the car and as such had to put the stands well under the car, normally I would use a trolly jack to lift the car and put the stands under the jacking points, but I didn't have one handy that day.

Hi PaulI have a 2003 Boxster S and have a knocking when going over painted lines and small unevenness in the road. I have replaed all of the rear lower control links and drop links as well as anti roll bar bushings. I bought all of my spares from Eurocarparts in the UK. I need the lower front control arms but neither Eurocarparts nor GSF can supply these. Could you please let me know where you purchased all of your spares please. Keep up the good work.Andy

Does the tuning fork need suspension pre load before adjusting to final torque ?
@Paul1962

No, they have a ball joint in the body mounted end so there is no loading on the arm

Hi Paul, I have a 1998 3.4 liter boxster. I have been noticing a little wobble coming from the front suspension and was thinking of doing the same "freshen up" job you did. My big question is... can you please tell me how the car felt and drove after doing all this work and investment? Would appreciate any feedback and if you thought this investment/maintenance accomplished what you hoped it would. Thanks for sharing with us your maintenance projects!
@Paul1962
@Paul1962 8 жыл бұрын
+qikqbn77 Hi, The basic answer is yes the project did achieve its goals. However the improvement's I was looking for were quiet small and subtle and many people may not think worth the investment in time and money. but often its the small details that make a big difference! also you have piece of mind, you know all the parts are new and reduces the chances of mechanical failure, comforting when traveling at speed! These parts should be go for anther 100K. Of coarse it also makes it easer to find future problems as you know all these components are new, if we take my car for an example if I were to replace the 4 struts and all 4 wheel bearing the car would be sitting on all new running gear! This is where I differ a lot from other people, if you have say a wheel bearing problem you change the wheel bearing, not me I would change all 4! lol lastly it helps with the resale value of the car. Hope you find this of some help. Paul

Did you get an IMS bearing retrofit or do you just have it switched out?
@Paul1962
@Paul1962 9 жыл бұрын
michael wilson Hi Michael, I haven't had the IMS bearing changed, I probably should of had it done when I had the clutch changed but I was new to porsche back then and didn't know the bearing could be problematic, but if I ever need to have the gearbox/clutch out again yes I would change it. Hope this answers your question, thanks for watching :)

hi Paul. I've just brought a 2001 2.7 . in your experience have u heard of a start up rattle from motor only about two seconds. people say it's normal just a bit worried done oil change car runs great any advice cheers Paul

Hi John, yes this is quite a common thing on first start up/cold start. it is a very small amount of wear in the timing chains/tensioners, more common in warmer weather, some people recommend using a heaver oil. hope this is of help to you, enjoy your new toy ! Paul

Great stuff Paul. Thanks for the info mate . I've put 5w 40 in it . As I though mobile one great oil 0w 40 . I love it Paul and can't belive how fast it is. Bearing in mind I've had a few m5 evo scooby . The porsche in my opinion is faster and a more capable road car . Thanks again Paul been a great help

John Sweeney yes, squeaks and knocks are normally rubber bushes/joints complete overall is quite straightforward but a bit pricey, but does tighten the whole car up and stop the noises

Paul1962 hi Paul love your videos, I have a silver Porsche lined up 2.7 2001 86.000 with hard top maintained at Porsche cambridge from day one a bit of advice please it has a cam cover oil leak you can see it from the rear he checked it out and this what was found.the other thing I wasn’t keen on was the velour inlay on the seats what are your views? Thanks.
@Paul1962
@Paul1962 6 жыл бұрын
TheYjmfan hi, the cam covers can be a bit of a pain, you need a special tool to hold the cams on place when you take the cover off. How bad is the leak? As for the seats it's your personal taste, but I know where you're coming from, second hand leather will set you back around £400, as will a part retrim. Leather is reasonable easy to restore and maintain if your good with your hands
@TheYjmfan
@TheYjmfan 6 жыл бұрын
Paul1962 can the cam cover leak be done in situ .? It’s only a small leak but I noticed a Mobil 1 top up in the boot this prompted me to check. The seller who is a private dealer, very genuine bloke I will say said he’s never seen any oil on the floor, I get the feeling it’s more of a seep.
@Paul1962
@Paul1962 6 жыл бұрын
I have a few damp patch's on mine, I also keep a bottle of top up oil in the boot, habit I think as I've done it with all my cars, she never loses oil and never seen anything on the ground. I did chuck a tin of stop leak in once but didn't make any differance

Please please use something more than just that scissor jack to support the car, they may be out of shot but I cant see any axial stands or additional support. If that car was to fall it would have no problems killing you.
@Paul1962
@Paul1962 9 жыл бұрын
fiatpandaman999 Hi, No just the jack.......... Just kidding! I never notice when making or editing that you cant see the axle stand! also I work on the idea that anyone that's going to work on a Porsche is going to have basic mechanical understanding and common sense, like yourself (or health and safety as they call it now days) I tend to lift the car with the scissor jack when on my own as I can't get a trolley jack under with the side shirts, I need Malcolm or Dan to grab the wheel arch and lift a couple of inches!
