The Puffing Billy is a U.S military portable water heating system that requires no electricity to operate. Off grid hot water made easy and mobile.
I picked up this water heater at the local military surplus store recently. The portable water heating system should be a perfect temporary solution for our off grid hot water needs on our rural property.
Being mobile, the puffing billy is ideal for situations where a sustainable source hot water is useful or necessary and there is no means to provide this efficiently.
The water heater can run on a number of different liquid fuels or mixtures thereof making it somewhat of a multi fuel device, This has obvious advantages when it comes to running the heater system.
It was a real buzz to find this peculiar device and I greatly anticipate using this in off grid situations in the future.
I shall at some point make a video of the maiden ignition and heating of some water, hoping that it does not turn out to be a video on "HOW NOT TO LIGHT A PUFFING BILLY" !!!
Until the next video, many thanks for watching and take care. Cheers.

Lost a few eyebrows using it. Stay low when lighting after it goes out and take stacks off first. They can fly pretty high. Retired USAF cook. Thanks for the memories.

As a US army cook, I used set up these heaters in the trash cans. Three cans in a line, wash, rinse and sanitation. The kitchen police (KPs) did the dirty work of washing kitchen pots and pans. These M67 are hard to come by.

❤❤❤ Love it love it and you did get a good deal on that right now I’ll check it on eBay they’re 800 bucks for a brand new one still in the crate along with a 33 gallon trash cans that we used to use I believe one of those up while sitting up at Phillys cleaning station on maneuvers for the army in about 85 I would say maybe 86 I was setting up a roll of seven of them and I have damage so often that I would go down through there in and fill seven of those cups about 3/4 of the way with petrol and it did it ran Mopar gas we put regular gas lead in it back then. I had filled up all seven of those little cups we also had wicks that you would dip down and then like them and use the wet to let each one open up and just go down today and let each one open it stick to it do it go to the next go to the next and you let them burn for a little bit they warm up the flu the four pipes. After giving time for the flues to be nice and hot. You could walk down through the row Holding open the little cup still burning turning on the valve or tap to a drip that would catch the flame in there it would hit the dispersing plate at the bottom turned into a nice little burning grow The faster you set the drip to where it look like. beads coming out Have that boiling in no time. I went back through them lighting them after the flues were hot One add gone out the little cup was no longer burning. It happens so I refilled my cup and when I went to ignite. It blew up throwing this wax my hat and it’s pouring my body and I’m not sure it was a blur I was about 15 feet away from it on my back nice red glow burned my face and every piece of facial hair eyebrows eyelashes burned and knotted up in the little knots that I had to shave off. All because I did not notice the little gasket underneath the filler cap that was slowly dripping leaking gasoline straight into the chamber the whole time I was waiting for the flues to heat. Sorry for such a long time it just brought back a powerful memory thanks for sharing John L. McDaniel. California USA 😮

Fantastic deal, the bin alone is worth 2 X the price. I have paid 100.00 USD. w / NO bin for those and they work great. I heat stock tanks with them for livestock, Word of advise make sure you use 4 sections of pipe for proper draft and screw them together too. Make sure you get good drafting Going, sometimes I have to fill the the cup twice. Then to light, I like to use one square of thin Toilet paper Just wet the corner light that drop in then start the drip, If it goes out use a second piece or toss a match down, Hard to get going with diesel without the paper. Gas works better to get going but can woof on you. do NOT look down it whilst lighting off.....

Awesome! Thanks for the very useful advice. Ha, I have to say the reason I got it was because my partner wanted a steel bin for animal food and we could not find one that was not cheap Chinese steel for love nor money and so ended up at the local military tender yard where they had a whole bunch of these things. Didn't immediately know what it was but knew I liked it and wanted one! This one still had the manual in the flue so quickly worked out it was a puffing billy water heater, got a price and the rest is history. Not yet had the call to use it as of yet but i'm sure as the colder weather gets here it will be invaluable at times. Once again many thanks and I shall heed your advice (good tip on the screws as I probably would have just shoved them together and had done!!! ) Cheers

I used one of those in the mid 1980's on exercise in BAOR. A brilliant bit of kit. Only ever used it with petrol though and it would bring that dustbin to a rolling boil in one hour or less if memory serves. A steel for 25 quid.

Yeah, should be used with kerosene. Flash points too low for petty however, when you're lighting a tap of dripping petrol, and one explodes on you at 3/4am YOU KNOW ABOUT IT @@AcceleratingUniverse

Always wanted to get one of these, can't believe you got one for 25 quid. Puffing billies or Canadian burners we called em. Using one on exercise I took my eyebrows off a couple of times. Even had flames coming out the tall end one time and the flue glowing red hot.

🤣 Good times hey. At least eyebrows grow back isn't it!.. Yeah I couldn't believe it was only £25! The local military tender had about 40 of them in the yard... If only I had a spare 450 at the time, I'd of had the lot!!🤣👍

Question for you what is your thoughts of this being converted to use wood for burning and not fuel? Do you think it would work?
@PeculiarFinds
@PeculiarFinds 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting thought!... Don't know about wood as such but with a bit of thought there may be a way to use saw dust? The main problem I can see is it getting choked with ash and embers etc over the time it was in use. Maybe if the pipes were put up through the bottom of the drum and welded or sealed so the circular part is on the outside underneath the drum, then a door can be cut in to remove ash etc? Hmm 🤔👍🏽

@@PeculiarFinds Wood will not work. Straight gasoline is what we used in the Army in 1970. They work great! Scared me until I tried it. Just have it on a slow drip. About one drop every 5 or 6 seconds. We also never used but one stack of the chimney. I think because they got tossed, lost or bent.

Ooooh now that is a painful question, I found about 40 of them stacked on two pallets at the back of a local Military Surplus/Tender yard... They were £25 each!!!!!!!!.... I offered them £400 for all of them as almost of them were unused... They said the Puffing Billies had just been reduced from £40 and £25 was the least they could take for them... So I just bought the one and put the word out to a few friends... I have seen them online for around £80-£120 in new condition from time to time.
