Portal is a (primarily) single-player puzzle platformer developed by Valve. You play as Chell, a test subject for the Portal Gun, a device able to rip doorways in the fabric of reality, creating the opportunity for instantaneous travel. You're accompanied by GLaDOS, a malicious artificial intelligence in charge of operating the mysterious Aperture facility you find yourself venturing through as you solve puzzles and complete tests in an attempt to escape.

I’ve always thought of it as very poetic that the failure of GLaDOS as a project was because of the human error of uploading a consciousness without that consciousness agreeing to it. It wasn’t a technical error in the system, what took down (almost) every Aperture science employee was their continued ignorance of human ethics. All of the karma from their decades-long questionable choices coming back to bite them.
@creeperking51

To elaborate a bit: my theory is that most of the maliciousness and anger in GLaDOS stems from the consciousness of Caroline being eternally furious for having to exist in this body. I didn’t pick this up on a first play through, (SPOILER) but GLaDOS deleting Caroline at the end of portal 2 was actually a blessing and all that Caroline truly wanted in the end

Not only did Caroline not want to be shoved into a robot for all eternity, but can you imagine the isolation of being able to process everything a million times faster? how much slower time must be for her? Who knows how many years, decades, or even centuries had gone by for her in that single second it took for her to come online. How much time her rage and anger has stirred and boiled into genocidal madness for those that put her in that prison. Her memory files were of course locked away but it was obvious that they were still some how able to effect Glados at every single level, even in portal 1, where her only way to kill you was through testing. it's tragic.

Like I said it's honestly crazy I wasn't more exposed to Portal considering how popular it really is. One day I was just thinking about what games I'd like to tackle next and I was like "Oh yeah, Portal exists. That seems like something different and cool." Although of all the games I've reviewed Far Cry 3 may be my personal favorite, Portal really is just a perfect series. I'd go for it as soon as you get the chance to. As far as I know it's on just about every system now.

I'm glad to see people rediscovering the game recently. There is some nifty secrets that suggest that Cave and Caroline are Chell's biological parents and she was left to one of the apature employees. In the "bring your daughter to work" day display, one of the Potatoes is Chell's... The overgrown one. THere is a whole layer of secrets riddled through out the game.

@Zero-Point-nx4rm 5 ай бұрын
Another KZfaqr, Ossy Flawol, made a video in which he debunks that theory (one piece of evidence in that video is that in Chell's project, she refers to her father and Cave Johnson as different people, and another is that Valve themselves said the relationship between Chell and GLaDOS is meant to be romantic, with "Want you gone" being called a break-up song)

Some would take that and say Chell is an android, but I'm more inclined to believe P-Body and Atlas are military android prototypes that GLaDOS repurposed as testing bots for her needs (or the player is an android). It fits even if VALVe never thought about it.

Since none of the comments seem to mention it: Fun fact: The ending to Portal 1 that we have today is not the original ending. While the ending isn't drastically different between old and new, during the lead up to Portal 2's announcement, the ending was changed to add Chel being dragged back into Aperture labs. Prior to Portal 2's ARG, the ending simply faded to black outside after defeating GLaDOS. The game was absolutely a surprise to everyone in how successful it was, and the original plans never really included a sequel, which is why the scene was edited in the lead up to Portal 2.

Here's something spooky if you look at the painting of Cave and Caroline. 20:59, who is that on the left? There's someone by the bookshelf, peeking out at these 2. It even looks like they're holding the curtain back. Now a popular fan theory. Mainly, that Cave and Caroline are Chell's parents. Maybe not biologically, but adoptively. (I certainly doubt biologically, as while Chell might be mixed race, possibly some Asian, Cave/Caroline are clearly as white as they come.)

Portal was so underestimated at first, cuz it's like "A puzzle game, really?" There was a lag before it took off because of that; at that point in game history, puzzles were usually impersonal & mechanical, never emotional, thus nothing to get excited about. They were only just that, puzzles, with little else to offer. That, it was first released as part of The Orange Box, which included Half Life 2 & both of its episodes (including THE actual release of Episode 2), which was of course what most people bought it for. But gosh, the combination of mind-bending unprecedented game mechanics, the cleverness of the puzzles, & the VERY witty, well-written & excellently-acted verbal humor REALLY sold it once it was given the chance. It just took a while for people to convince others "No, SERIOUSLY! It IS a puzzle game but trust me, it is AMAZING! Please give it a try!" And yup, they managed to find the perfect combination of not including many physical characters so the mechanical focus would indeed be on the puzzles... but they also found the perfect way to include personality & humor. As well dark undertones & direction to bring additional depth & seal the deal. Another reason Portal really excels is the care in presentation. Valve ran SO much in-depth, focused playtesting with outside players, & were absolutely meticulous about taking notes & asking for in-depth feedback. Like scientists themselves. From big learning & design issues, to even tiny little nitpicks, they took polishing everything VERY seriously, to a level that remains extremely rare even today. Like... Studio Ghibli levels of attention to detail. For example: The white, sterile walls of most of the original game were from a conscious decision to simplify the environments, so players could focus on the puzzles themselves. Since especially back then this was all SO new & advanced that the play-testers had a hard time getting the hang of it when surfaces were more complex or detailed. They then embraced that necessity & polished it into a distinctive aesthetic. Still very simple, but also with its own recognizable atmosphere & design. Only later, when the player became more familiar with how everything worked, were more varied environments introduced. And by then, players were conditioned to look for white surfaces to portal to. Huge Success! Then there was deciding HOW all the physics would work, blending realism & fun, maintaining spacial comprehensibility in such an uncharted frontier of first-person perspective, etc. There are actually subtle grace corrections with entering portals certain ways, where normally your hitbox wouldn't quite fit right, or your angle on exiting would normally require a drastic swing-up to see where you're going, etc... but the game very quietly alters hitboxes at specific moments, or secretly adjusts your perspective slightly, to make it all flow more smoothly. Seriously, the micro-adjustments are SO mindful & helpful to the player experience, but without any unnecessary babying-down. (They even improved it in Portal 2, such as cubes fitting even more easily through the portals than in the original). With the special physics & puzzle-solving nature of the game, they had to anticipate COUNTLESS actions the player might take, to make sure the game would be VERY difficult to sequence-break, glitch out, or soft-lock. If things didn't work VERY solidly, it would create frustration & make it hard to tell if what you were trying just plain wasn't the solution, or if it was just the game messing up. Which is a recipe for players quitting in frustration; if they tried the actual solution but it just happened to not work, then they might never try it again, thus never solve the puzzle & beat the game. (I could go on & on, but well, that's what the game's built-in developer's commentary mode is for. I recommend people check that out themselves (with subtitles enabled) if they want to learn just how many iterations & attempts this game went through, before it became the polished, near-perfected masterpiece we know & love.) Valve couldn't half-ass it. So they put their FULL asses into it! 😜 And man was it worth it! What an unforgettable experience we got! I'm so glad it hadn't been spoiled for you, that you enjoyed it so much, & that you shared your experience for us to enjoy too.

The fact you havent played outer wilds yet is wild (no pun intended) It is the best game to go into blind, and if theres ONE game you can only play/experience once, its outer wilds. I've heard some dislike the game because they get lost and/or feel like theyve just wasted time after finding the correct solution to something after trying for so long, but its basically just an open-worlds mystery/puzzle game that doesnt have any quest markers or waypoints, which is likely why people get lost. It can take a long time to beat, it can either take you an hour, or upwards of 20, but its widely regarded as a really good game.

*SPOILERS* - - - - When GLaDos says "All i know is I'm the only only thing standing between us and them". Yes, she could mean the Combine but since we don't know when portal/portal 2 are, we cant confirm this

This was back when valve still made games, and honestly, TF2, another valve game, has a lot of that same soul that Cave Johnson has, which is why it was such an explosive success. It just absolutely OOZES personality! Sadly, idunno what happened, but, valve one day just decided "Nah, we're not making games anymore, and we're also gonna stop supporting our live-service games." which is why tf2 is in such a derelict state, and we haven't seen any games with personality from valve ever since. :( I mean Valve made half-life alyx, but that was primarily because they wanted to showcase their VR technology... And it's a prequel to half-life 1, so it's not a sequel. : /

The lore of these games becomes even more fascinating when you consider half-life.

The good news is that Valve have actually talked about how they regret making Portal part of the same universe as Half-Life in order to sell the first game. Which is why they set Portal 2 a long LONG time after the events of, well, everything!
