Positive Counsellor Experience

Found somebody privately, and had a half an hour free consultation type of talk with a counsellor, it was nice to be told what they do and how they do it, also their qualifications and what they needed to do in order to get that qualification, and then to discuss how things my look should I take things forwards.
Very open, very relaxed, no pressure at all but also and more importantly, gave me space to feel like I had a voice and that it was ok to feel like I am.
Hopefully this is a step in the right direction

So true & when we're mentally functioning at our best, it's easier to work on making that money, too.

happy for you! 🤗 i think health (mental and physical) should always be a priotity and will always be worth more than money. so as long as you feel the sessions are helpful, i believe it is a good thing to invest this money in yourself

Before counselling, the issues I had, I likened it to a large ball of black wool. Sometimes the thread would get so tight and heavy so I tried to pull it loose (dealing with it on my own), the ball would just get tighter and tighter. I was sinking fast. Then I had counselling and it felt like a pair of scissors snipping away at the threads to loosen up the wool. Pockets of light started peaking through and it (my issues) became easier to manage. The ball of wool sometimes tightens again but nowhere near like before. I used the strategies I learnt during that time to deal with them.

So, SO happy to hear your news, Adam; I've been hoping your session went well. And please know that you share & explain everything so clearly & eloquently in your videos. I'm quite sure you're helping more people than you know & that's a wonderful gift to others, thank you. Sending you good vibes, thoughts & prayers across the pond for healing & continuing progress. 🍁

Absolutely agree with you Adam. Therapy and counseling can be a huge help to so many people, but we neglect our mental health for whatever reason. Most people would go to the doctor if they're sick physically, but few go to therapy when needed. So I applaud you for taking that step - seeking help doesn't make you weak, quite the opposite - it shows you're not stubborn and you're not giving up. Hope it pays off for you mate

After having counselling, trained in counselling for the last year, and now in my first year of a psychology degree this makes me happy! I had a few negative experiences but eventually found the right counsellor and it set me on the path i am currently on. Stick with it, its an investment in yourself! You wouldnt expect to fix a broken leg yourself so dont expect the same for your mental health 👍🏻 trust the process and you'll rock it!

@@Add- it’s tough going but really interesting. The counselling side is very challenging personally, it requires a lot of introspection and working on personal ‘stuff’ as well as group work, supervision etc to prepare yourself for the kind of things that will come up in a counselling session. As for psychology I’m hoping to work in either a clinical or research capacity but I’ve barely scratched the surface at this point it is very interesting though!

I was thinking the same thing: you can't pull yourself up by your bootstraps if your leg is broken & you're using crutches. Therapy IS helping yourself & when our brains function optimally, we take better care of ourselves in all regards. Wishing you success in your training, Connor. Cheers!

Great news Adam! Here is to a more positive future! People speak over each other because they have mindfulness and only listen to points that stick out to them, hold onto that and focus on what they want to reply with hence missing out most of the conversation of what the person is saying.

im so glad you found something that resonates on a good level. I havent had much experience with counsellers. one i had was on "listen" mode the whole 9 months i had him up until the very end. im not sure if thatl be the case with you, infact you did say they offered their take on things THATS the part i think matters. power to ya matey im in a very similar situation to yours. dont give up

If it was easy to "fix" ourselves, therapists would be held in similar regards to witch doctors. Some people need physiotherapy for issues often out of their control, and some people need mental therapy for theirs. You can't heal your back all by yourself so don't beat yourself up for not being able to "just sort yourself out" as we like to say to ourselves. The brain is super complex.

Real people here. Might not be in your life. But we do hear your struggles. It helps us with our own. I never had therapy, but I know I needed it. So I can only associate the value given with other things. I say this: Whatever you pay to fix your mind you will earn back just from having a clearer mind. I only got examples of expensive books, I used to buy these €80 books. Read them, and it always seemed that someone at work asked me a question I just read about. I am sure I earned back that money no problem over the years. I got a book shelf full of those books. 📚. A clear mind is worth it, it will help you in the long run. I hope you find what you searching for. And can get back to stable grounds. Best well wishes from a internet stranger.

Some of what you have said in your videos does resonate with me but for different reasons. I had a difficult time fully accepting myself as gay despite coming out at 16, but I had a relationship, was going to have a civil partnership with him, but still wasn't fully comfortable in my own skin, I was always was bothered about what people thought about me, was I too gay? Do I look gay? I thought maybe I needed to be hyper masculine. And basically through those thoughts I went back in the closet in my early 20s. By supressing myself I ended up depressed, anxious. Found it hard to get a job, was drinking, my life was a mess really. Moved back with my parents. I'm 38 now, 39 in June and finally feel like myself and don't care what people think, I just wish I had this confidence 10-15 years ago, I should never have been so harsh on myself, my life would've been so different, could've been happy for years. I'll never get those years back that I wasted alone and feeling down but it's time to look forward. Hopefully this new year will be a good one. All the best to you Adam. Gaz.

You hit the nail on the head there mate, while the past can haunt us for its many reasons, its easy to look back with what could of been, for me thats something I really struggle to shake off, but its also damaging to what could be, or more importantly, what is. I am glad you feel more yourself now, but don't hold it against yourself for how you played your hand at that time, we all do things for the reasons we feel are right at the time. But what is more important is how you move forward and learn from that past to live a life thats more you now, it sounds like you are in a much better place, so keep living it 😄

I have a friend who knows quite a lot abt this sort of thing n she said that counselling like psychodynamic and psychoanalysis are kinda the ones where you talk about what you want to talk about etc. and can be more helpful if you need to work through issues that are long-term? (also if you're any type of neurodivergent it is more helpful to just talk a lot so that you don't unintentionally mask your true thoughts and feelings)

How much is the price? I paid £20 for a student therapist but it went to to £50 when she graduated. NHS took a few months and got me in a 8 week CBT though the sessions are spread out.
