Spasticity is one of the most frustrating things a stroke survivor can deal with. Botox is commonly used as a spasticity treatment, but is it worth the hype?

I've been getting Botox every 12 weeks for the last 2 years. I've found it very helpful for me. I always book my physio therapy for the same day to help get it moving into the muscles as suggested by my Physical Therapist and my Physiatrist who does my Botox injections I also go to physiotherapy every other week and do about 2 hours a day every day except Sunday at home. Just the other day at therapy I was able to move my foot from the ankle. I've been able to lift the toes of the affected side for a while but, lifting the foot by bending at the ankle was new. I'm due for more Botox in about 4 weeks. Still hoping to get hand and finger movement back some day. My stroke was Dec 29, 2019.

Botox was great for me, helped my affected left arm. Received injections every 3 months for 1 year, now just twice a year. The cons are the injections are very painful and out of pocket money is a lot. 3 year stroke survivor, Julius from Vero Beach, Fl

After my 1st stroke in 2013 I spent 9yrs walking on my toes well the ball of my right foot. So after the 3rd stroke they tried to fix it with Botox. With an AFO and the change is amazing after 4mths But it’s wearing off now and in England I have to go on a waiting list which is a year long. But I think with continuing with my boot I might not need it again. xx

I’ve had brain injury in 2016 and because of it I started feeling spasticity after 2-3 years in my right hand and right leg. I tried to control it for 2-3 years but my hand wouldn’t open until I pull my fingers out so I got Botox and it actually helped a lot but I didn’t use to exercise daily because of which it’s getting bad and I have to increase the dose, now my right leg was in control till last year but then the condition started to get even worse and now my right foot rejects my body weight, I’m thinking to go for Botox in my right leg too. My advice would be to take Botox and to exercise each and everyday till you are alive.

Spasticity after stroke got me feeling helpless and depressed, toes do their own thing and it hurts to walk or try to run/jog like I used to normally do. It hurts after a while, dealing with every minute of every day. My first trial of botox has gone alright, one particular contracture is less painful but it was a small dose. Insurance is a pain in the ass, and getting the shot in the bottom of the foot like I did friggin hurts!

Each case is different. I can only share my experience. When I was in intensive rehab, my doctor and my PT put pressure that I got Botox in my left calf to reduce spasticity and clonus. I was relunctant to do it. I finally concede. I got injections 3 times during the year. Each time, I wasn't sure it was a good thing to do. I finally decide to stop receive it, against the advice of the doctor and the PT. 10 years later, I still got spasticity and clonus, but I learn to manage it. My left calf is less than half the size of the right calf, even if I do a lot of exercises (walked more than 10 000 steps each day since the beginning of this month for example). I don't know how the things would be if I haven't had those injections, but my feeling is that the size of my calf is in part the result of them. If it was to be done today, I wouldn't get those injections.

@BenSo, Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm sorry it didn't help you as much as you'd hoped. You'd need to see your doctor or neurologist for specific dosage and injection site recommendations. While daily stretching is not a long term fix for spasticity, it can help to better manage in the short term. I have several stretching for spasticity videos which are linked at the end of this video. You may find those helpful ❤️

I've had Botox injections since the beginning of my stroke. It certainly helped with the severe pain I was in and the high tonicity. However the side effects for me are atrocious. I wouldn't mind so much if it wasn't impacting my lower limb treatment. Can't walk or exercise if you are dizzy, weak and tired. Several weeks of flu like symptoms, extreme fatigue, aching body, all over muscle weakness, dizziness, double vision for around 6 weeks and constipation. I was getting the maximum dose of 1500 units. I read that to keep side effects at bay for us sensitive people, it has to be under 500 units, but I still get side effects but less. At least the double vision has eased. It's a necessary evil for me.

I regret everyday that I tried Botox it relaxed my leg muscle so much it took away my ability to walk even after even after adjusting the dose. I went from walking with and without a cane to walking now with a walker which I never needed before.

I developed antibodies after two years of Botox injections (every 4-6 months) in my hand, arm, lower leg and foot, so there was no effect of the Botox, the blocking of the synapses did not work anymore. The treatment was purely cosmetic, motorically it did nothing, although I had a lot of specialized neurological therapy and practiced myself as best as I could. Botox is not a pill that you take and then your symptoms are gone. If you don't continue to go to therapy consistently and with motivation after treatment, you will have little or no benefit. My spasticity and tone in my arm, hand and foot is worse now than before treatment. My muscle tissue is stiffer and more gummed up than ever, my therapists agree. In my opinion, the therapy is used too quickly and inflationary. Long-term side effects are not yet sufficiently researched, Botox is definitely not a miracle cure after a stroke!
@PostStrokeOrg
@PostStrokeOrg Жыл бұрын
@karenmuller, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience and insights! Developing the antibodies can be so frustrating as the effectiveness wears off. You're absolutely right that you need to continue with movement and therapy after the injections to really see the benefit. It's not a miracle cure on its own and as I mentioned in the video, the decision to get Botox injections should be discussed with one's doctor! Thanks again ❤️

@@PostStrokeOrg you are welcome ☺️ It is also important to go to a specialist who knows well the anatomy .Here in Germany, the injection is mostly done under EMG to be sure to inject the muscle at the spot with the highest potentials. I have already heard from fellow patients that there are doctors who inject into the muscles on the off chance..., that is a NO GO!
