I bought a 'Smart' one and it worked for all of a day then didn't charge my phone. I also bought a Microcable one and it melted and nearly set the car on fire. Moral of the story, DON'T BUY CHEAP SHITTY CABLES.

As an American, when I hear "poundland" it makes me think of the title of a porno film.

I have witnessed the systemic murder of almost a dozen charging cables.

This was strangely satisfying, but maybe that's because of the overwhelming temptation to cut through an old spiral phone cord as a child, oops. I'd be very interested to see a micro-USB android version of this video please, and not just so I can cut through my old charging cable if it's rubbish.

Kudos for using a current meter to evaluate cables. A couple of notes: - Not all iOS devices can draw a full 2A. My iPhone 6 draws about 1A when charging, or 1.3A total if it is charging and running at the same time. For the phone, some of the cheaper cables would have been just fine. - The version of iOS actually does matter. I believe more cables were compatible after upgrading to iOS 9. - Your best chance of getting a good cable is to get one with the "Made for iPhone" (MFI) logo on it. These have a genuine chip from Apple that's likely to work better.

The question is, is Bigclive the Ashens of cheap electronics, or is Ashens the Bigclive of cheap tat?

I had one of those retractable ones from poundland. Worked fine for a few months then stopped working. I also got one of their power banks as well. Damn thing doesn't even hold any charge.

This is such an eye opener, i never thought of checking the current the cables could carry. Most of mine are crap, and it explains how my phone can run down while plugged in. It also shows how rubbish some of my chargers are.

the rope ones are nice (when their innards work decently, at least) because you don't get a weak spot where the cord connects to the plug and gets bent a lot when using your phone while charging. so many of my charger cables have split apart at that specific spot. though there are also little cable cover things you can get, too, apparently.

I never expected that a cable could affect the charge!!! I actually learned something useful ;)

Took the clunge and spent the extra coin to get a few sets of the magnetic cables Big Clive recommended, absolutely the very best cables I've used and they eliminate scratches around the connection on the device so they're a no-brainer regarding the initial cost.

I love how unscientific this test was... he never checked the charge of the iPad to see if iOS was just trickle charging.

does the ipad have software which test the cables when plugged in or is there a resistor across the data pins telling the device to not draw more than 1A or is it somehow the resistance of the cables or does anyone else have any good theories
