Fun fact: sometimes they make juniors and seniors the priority and give them bigger roles (depending on how much time they have spent with the theater program at the school, how much experience they have, and how good their audition was) because they are closer to graduating and it’s “their time to shine”. But it’s not like it’s impossible for freshmen or sophomores to get leads and big roles ❤️

As a technician, I can confirm that during meetings before casting, the seniors are already "pre-cast" for leads. At least by our director

Bro if it makes you feel better, I couldn't do theatre for two of my highschool years, but when I changed schools I did it again as a senior and learned a lot and felt closer to my underclassmen than when I was a freshman in my previous school. Sometimes seniors get preferred parts because they've worked with the teacher longer and have shown trustworthiness, but at the same time, I've known freshmen that have blown me away with their ability! Stay humble and kind in theatre (avoid gossip for the love of God) and be the team player you wish your upperclassmen could be, and be brave to explore your characters and stories - having fun and learning as much as possible is valuable in the highschool theatre

I remember being in high school as a freshman, and they were doing godspell. I auditioned for one of the "disciples." I think it was Peggy or Sonia. I remember getting this exact talk from several seniors. I ended up being they only freshman to get a leading role as Robin. She had a better solo for me anyway. I always felt looked down on by my senior cast members... o well!

OMG i literally had something like this happen to me i was in eighth grade and i auditioned for the school play Singin in the Rain. the day after callbacks i was talking to my friend about how excited i was for the cast list to come out, and this ninth grader butted in and said “yeah but don’t get your hopes up. you probably won’t get anything good” i then proceeded to get the role of Kathy Selden, and was on stage the whole time :)

Oof you did so well it made me mad lol. I remember this competitiveness from seniors in high school choir when I was a sophomore. Joke was on them, though, I had been training in opera for three years and theatre before that… I was the only one who could hit the high notes reliably so I got the “senior” solos constantly lol. They were so aggressive about it, and I was like… I’m just here to sing as often as possible to keep my voice warm for the stuff I actually care about after school lol.

And I hate to report but they told her that her daughter was not the size she needed to be and the mother put a barre in their attic and her leg wasn’t broken before but word on the street her mom pushed her so hard that she may have just injured herself by accident but look at God bc I only I heard and saw it all go down bc I was waiting in lobby for my sister to finish her class. Either way she won with a cast on and I cried just proud of her tenacity ❤
