"Santa Barbara local Frankie Hill was known for his "go for it" attitude, especially when filming videos. He was featured in Public Domain but Ban This features his breakout part, one minute and 38 seconds of what many today consider proof of Hill’s pioneering stunt work at big rails and huge gaps. After Ban This, Hill received bags of fan mail asking when he’s going to turn pro. The timing was good, too, as a spot opened up with Mike Vallely’s departure. Hill started riding Vallely’s shape, modified with a bigger nose, and on a vacation with Hastings, he poached a bulldog logo from an Amsterdam “coffee shop” and made it his first pro graphic. It was illustrated by Sean Cliver in 1990.

I never noticed that the Hill and Vallely decks were the same shape with different concave. How cool! I never skated a Frankie Hill deck, but that Mike V elephant was one of my favorites boards from when I was a kid. I've been riding more modern decks and I've been thinking about setting up a more old school deck, I might have to reconsider this one!

@@80slove absolutely.. As a Kid, My Buddies and I would choose a Pro to claim. To be our spirit skater if you will.. Frankie Hill was mine. Which is why this Bull Dog deck was my first pro board ever purchased brand new in the wrap out of a skate shop.

Had that one back in the day and loved that shape. Kept it for a while and took it to college in 94 and by then everyone was on popsicles and my college skater friends didn't know what to make of it! That was the last shaped deck I rode until getting back on a couple years ago.

Crazy how quickly things changed in the early 90s. Have you bought the Bulldog Reissue? I'd be interested to hear if it rides similar to your OG...or at least what you remember of the OG.

I agree with you, " Heat Transfer" sucks ! Nothing better than a "Screen Printed" graphic especially on an Old School deck.

There's an interview on 9 Club with Frankie where he talks about his injury. Totally sucks because he's a cool guy, and he got hurt doing a calendar photoshoot, not even in a competition. I've got the recent light blue and silver colorways of this graphic, and his Ear deck that's minty fresh. I'm trying to get all of the natty decks from '90. I have Frankie's Ear, the Tommy G Iron Gate, The Roy Underhill mini Cross, and just picked up the Nicky Guerrero Feather. The Tony Hawk Medallion, Cab Mask, and Steve Saiz Buffalo have been elusive. At least at a price I'm willing to pay, although I did just get my hands on a super minty Tony Hawk Claw deck, the white series 10.

Sick deck. I picked up the gray stained one that is currently available and it's pretty awesome. It really does look like a work of art even if it didn't have the graphic on it. And yes, the K15 concave really is pretty extreme IMHO. I stopped skating around 1990. The decks I skated between 1984 and 1990 were much mellower than that.

@@80slove The thing that gets me with a lot of those K15 decks is that they have a long wheelbase, which I normally like, but, the pockets are different than a normal Powell Popsicle shaped deck. With the Hill, I would probably want to put my front foot back a bit a lot of the time, which isn't the most comfortable with the deep concave. I've noticed the K15s are all pretty similar, just the deck shape is different. For example, the Ripper (newer one), Cab Ban This, Nitro, and Hill, all have K15. I was skating the Nitro earlier today. I like that one because it's got a long nose and tail, and long wheelbase. The concave doesn't seem to bother me too much on that one. I have the others, but, haven't skated them, except for the Cab. For some reason, I have found that Indy 169s don't have as loose a turn as 159s. So, I haven't skated the Cab deck that much since that's what I have on it. But, I got some 166s Stage 4, which I may put on there. Actually, I just put 166s with Bones X97s on the Nitro. I've been liking the X97s a lot lately. The Stage 4 do seem to turn a bit better than 169s. Or, at least they seemed looser initially. Though, the bushings hardened up some after the first session. I like my trucks pretty loose. I even tried super soft Indy bushings on the 169s and they were way harder than stock ones on 159s. Not sure what's up with that.

@@80slove Powell has a video with their ams skating the green Hill deck. The green one does look pretty sick. I was planning on skating the gray stained one I got, but, it just looks like too much of a work of art. just the shape of the deck, plus the stain an lacquer alone make it looks like art, setting aside the graphic. I probably would have preferred a VCJ graphic for Hill personally. That was funny how Vallely said that VCJ wanted to make his graphic a cockroach.

@@80slove Actually, the most aggressive kicks board I have is the OG Ray Barbee Firehydrant deck. Not really that much concave, but, the nose and tail kicks are nuts. Plus, a weird 13 point something wheelbase. I set it up recently with some new trucks and wheels, but, it was just too crazy kicked up. I don't even want to mess with it. It's basically an ankle injury waiting to happen. These days, I think I prefer mellow concave and kicks. My preferred board is probably an 8.75 Powell Popsicle shaped Flight deck with Indy 159s or 149s depending on the wheels.
