Perfect timing. Lost power. And remembered I had a Battery air pump hooked to my shiner bucket
@RockMongler

During the big freeze last year in Texas, I luckily was able to get by by wrapping both of my tanks in sleeping bags and relying on battery/USB air pumps to keep everything going. I had no losses (both of my tanks were cool-water species that normally live with my condo's room temp of 68-76 through the year), but I do worry a bit now that I have a heater for my betta in my 10 gallon. I have a smaller gas generator I have already bought since, and combining that with the 1000 watt unit would let me run the generator during the day to generate power, and use the battery for the rest of the time when dealing with the inevitable extended power outages that come with hurricanes/winter storms around here.

The sleeping bags are a great idea and I will remember it if the time comes--I have a couple of old down bags--maybe wrap with one of those emergency (silver) blankets? Without power, my house can drop to the low 30s in winter---brrrrrr. All you can do is bring snacks into bed and get under heavy blankets. ;)

I was lucky enough to manage to not lose much...we lost power for 3 days straight then it was very spotty for another 3-4 days but we have a gas stove so I heated water on the stove and kept their water in the lower 60s. Inside temps in our house got down into the 30s. My brother had a harder time because they were all electric, and were without power for longer.

The sleeping bag is a great idea. I put some items on my Christmas gift list for this purpose - battery backup air pumps, thin metallic emergency blankets, and those little pocket hand warmers. Not going to keep things super warm in an extended mid-winter outage, but would help keep things a bit better for the most sensitive fish, in smaller tanks, for shorter outages.

@@pjp9383 I would be in fear with every windstorm here, lol. I was without electricity for 10 days once, right before Xmas, everything on electric including well pump. That was years ago, but it has still kept me from starting up a tank, sadly. I do want to set up a couple smaller ones with Tanganyika shellies and julies.

@@scrubjay93 Oh dear! What about aiming for a heavily planted, lightly stocked tank, with heavily textured rock for hardscaping, so as to provide lots of surface are for beneficial bacteria? That might survive no filter better than some? I am actually really thinking about trying to go filterless in my betta tanks, after making some adjustments...

I just had five days without power here in Scotland. Three tanks full of fish saved by someone giving me hot water 4 times a day, constantly moving the water by taking it out and pouring it back in. Replacing a third of the water each time I put in hot water and then wrapping each tank in quilts and blankets. Every single fish survived!
@pjp9383
@pjp9383 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! When I have a longish power outage, I make a point of going to each tank every hour or so, scooping some of the water up and pouring it back in, for the sake of the surface agitation to get some oxygen into the water.

I would love one of these. My current back-up plan is USB air pumps and a whole lot of solar rechargeable cell phone blocks. This would make things so much easier upstairs where I have multiple tanks, one device could be powering it all and for longer periods of time versus having a whole bunch of smaller ones spread across the room that I need to swap out every day to recharge. I have been looking at the battery backup power bar type, but they don't last as long. We have a generator that will run our whole house, but sometimes the weather is so bad we can't get out to hook it up until the next day or, if the weather is really bad for an extended amount of time you can run out of fuel and can't get more for a bit or, of course, your generator dies on you when you need it most. Either would be great, but I could definitely manage with a 1,000.

Being in Florida, I don’t really have to worry about freezes much, but we do have lots of storms with the random with a random tornado or hurricane that takes out power for a while. For years I had a single 29, but now I have a couple of 75s and a 55 gal. With an additional 5 tanks (mix of 10s & 20s) a neighbor is giving me because his dad is getting too old to keep up any more. I’ve learned that Multi Tank Addiction is a real thing. I think a 2000w would do well for that and a small fridge. Thanks for an informative review and giving us an idea on a useful item that many hobbyists wouldn’t think about. And a big thanks to the Okmo for making it possible.

New aquarist here. Father of a 75 cichlid tank and a 40 breeder. I'm in Florida our storms are not infrequently strong. Our power goes out somewhat frequently. They usually are able to get it back on pretty quick but it's good to not rely they'll get it done fast everytime. Having a 1,000 watt running air stones would let me sleep well at night.

1,000 watt !! I also went through the Texas freeze last year… I was able to keep my 65 gallon aquarium relatively warm by wrapping it in windshield sun blockers and a couple blankets. A battery operated air stone kept the water moving. Surprisingly, over the course of two or three days the water temperature got down to 55°F and I didn’t lose any of my tetras.

Ultimately, either one would be fantastic, but I'll say the 2000. My husband and I are both fishkeepers and high school teachers. We have tanks at home and in our classrooms. We live on the coast of North Carolina, and it's typical for us to get hit with at least one hurricane each summer/fall. When Hurricane Florence came through in September of 2018, we were the first point of landfall, and our power was out for almost two weeks. Having something like this would definitely alleviate some of the stress of hurricane season. Lol.

2000 watt. Power outages from storms, wind and ice, here in Texas. Have a 125 and 36 gal. tanks and have had to use the very loud generator in the past with extension cords running through the house. This is an ironic video because my wife was mentioning about a power source in case of power outage about a week ago as we go into the winter season. If I'm not home she has to get the generator going and that's not high on her list of things to do in a power failure. Great video by the way!

1000 watt. Power outages here are rare as in the area I am in , all lines are underground (no poles to go down). In the event of an outage , my gas boiler (old house) uses a millivolt thermostat that does not use electric and thus the heat still works. Tanks are not overstocked , so no worries

1000 watt. Back in March my home was severely damaged by a tornado and because we were without power i was afraid of losing all my fish. (120g, 60g, and 3 20g long) luckily a local fish store took all of our fish and none died, but it was close. Because of storm damage we ended up losing all our aquariums. I worry about another storm and losing power for an extended period and this would be huge to help protect our fish.

We had a huge storm years back that resulted in a 10-day power outage, right before Xmas---horrible. The days are so short here in winter in Washington state that it was only light for a short day, like living in a cave. That usb air pump has a resistor in it to trigger certain battery packs to turn on. The resistor uses more power than the pump itself and most battery packs don't require it. Pull the silicone cover off and cut off the resistor. It'll run for a week or two off of a small usb battery pack.

1000 watt. my area gets heavy snow in the winters and storms in the summers, so I’m always running around my tanks trying to scoop water up and dump it back in just to get some movement

I would love the 1000 watt. Our electricity recently went out due to a down power line. It stayed out for 3 hours. I was a nervous wreck. This would definitely give me peace of mind. I love all my fish kids.

We have big winds out here and sometimes it definitely knocks the power out. The 1000 watt would definitely be helpful.

I am currently dealing with a power outage dues to the tornado that hit my town of Mayfield and leaned the hard way that I need 2 backup plans. Luckily I was able to get another generator but that 2000 watt would have come in real handy!

Living in Minnesota, we deal with outages year round. Between the severe thunderstorms in the Spring through Fall, and the ice storms and heavy snowfall. We have four to six outages a year. I have eighteen tanks going in two rooms in our basement so it would be great to get either, but I feel the 2000 watt unit would easily cover all of the tanks and would help minimize if not eliminate any losses of fish that we have had in past outages. Thank you for your reviews. - Brent

1,000 watt!! 💜 you could definitely plug in a Linear airr pump and a space heater for the room, and be golden for quite a while!

The 1000 w would come in very handy. I have spawns of betta babies during the year and had few time came close to losing a spawn over power outages. So 1000 w love that size.

1000watt just had a 5 hour outage 2 nights ago. Had a cold ice storm and wasn't sure how long it was going to last. Lucky enough all 4 of my tanks are doing well after a water change.

1000 watts. We lose power constantly, over the summer we went without power for 8 days. The fish room is heated and as long as your not in and out it stays warm for days, a backup on the air pump would be life changing.

Thanks ,I love your videos!!!!! Here in Chicago we have power outages from time to time so I have a gas generator to power my four aquariums just in case, actually was considering investing in a wholehome battery backup system .... I would love the 2000 watt one

I got a Goal Zero Yeti 1000 watt with the Boulder 200-Watt solar charger. The solar charger recharges faster than a wall outlet on a sunny day! The solar charger chord is short, so I got extension chord so the charger can be outside and the battery in my fish room. Yes expensive and like the insurance policy I hope I never need, but glad that I have it.

I've been looking for a generator for this exact reason. Lost power during a snowstorm last year for 2 days. Luckily I had a battery operated air pump to save most of my fish. Unluckily I lost a fish due to the aquarium getting too cold and having no way to power my heater. Would love to have the 1,000 watt. I'd say that would've been enough to keep my tanks heaters running for the 2 days the power was out. At the same time before I had an aquarium we had a snow storm that kept the power out for 5 days and in that case I don't believe the 1,000 would've been enough but the 2,000 probably would have. So either would be a blessing for me and my Mbunas. Love the channel btw. I've learned alot and continue to be educated by your experience in fish keeping.

We have been looking for awhile now for the right solution if we have an outage. We currently have 16 fish tanks so the 2000 watt would be a HUGE help! Please include me in your drawing ! You guys are great!!

Thanks for such a great review! I'd never heard of the Okmo generators. We don't usually get power outages that last for more than an hour or two where we currently live, but we have dealt with longer ones in the past (drunk driver hit a pole and took a transformer BOTH times!). I do worry about what I can do if we have that kind of longer outage happen again. Now I know what to look for!

We don't get a lot of power outages, but having one of these would make me feel much better. Thanks for the chance to win. I would chose the 1000 watt one.

You should charge those power banks with solar. Like the bluetti setups. You can also just buy a bunch of cheap solar panels and batteries and a controller with outlet plug ins.

I would love to have the 2000 watt. Living in California, we are constantly dealing with wildfires along with PG&E blackouts. My family and I just started our first aquarium and I definitely need to make sure these fish stay alive for my little guy to enjoy, especially in the time of disasters. Good luck to everyone that enters, I'm sure these generators will go to someone that needs them. Hearing your review, these sound like the real deal of back up for anything essential in the home.

I dont know : in my country; there is several people modify UPS to be a backup for longer time than regular UPS. Regular UPS as long i know will be backup electricity for short time... Lets says 10 minutes maksimal. No matter how big mAh stored in those UPS. 3 minutes.... Cuts off, bye bye With modification, thus it backup electricity UNTIL completely Dry. Can you modify UPS......for your need?
