Redem10 Rewatch the actual scene where Rita escapes the dumpster. She actually calls for a "coming out party"
@Mount19747 жыл бұрын
Originally, a 'coming out party' was an event in wealthy society (typically in the Southern US) where young, unwed daughters were presented to their peers in society. (Largely as a way of saying, "hey, my daughter is of marriagable age now, whoooo wants to take her off my hands!?") It's one of those things that got co-opted into queer society and then the original meaning largely went away.

Not only that, i think one of power rangers strongest messages was that sometimes your bullies can change and be better people. Bulk and Skull have a great character arch that, while not queer, shows that those people made fun of us for being gay could sincerely regret it and earn forgiveness.
@jeaninemelnitz6 жыл бұрын
Without knowing about that media hype, I still thought that moment with Trini, Zack and Billy was pretty clear. Zack is clearly, sincerely asking. And I like that pause Trini makes. To me, it says that she might still be questioning herself, not ready to admit she might not be straight to herself or at least to others. That kind of internal struggle is very powerful and relate relateable, even if you're not gay.

My only question is: why Trini and not Billy? I feel like we could have had some real pathos AND apology to David Yost if the character based on his original portrayal was allowed to be openly gay and accepted at least by the other Rangers. Instead, they go with Trini in what feels like "straight guys love lesbians, so we can get away with this!" and it makes me want to punch someone.
@DanSmith-ew9ul7 жыл бұрын
Well I want more lesbian characters out there so I can relate to them. And plus there are a lot of straight women out there who get off on gay guys so either way, fan service. Although they could have just made both characters gay or bi.
@slashandbones137 жыл бұрын
Expect if that was their reasoning, they didn't appeal to those people either. They probably didn't notice. As for Billy, being gay and autistic would be too much for one person in a two hour film that is supposed to focus on a group as a whole. Just my opinion
@grahamkristensen93017 жыл бұрын
I think it would be like how the Star Trek reboot movies made Sulu gay as a tribute to George Takei: well-meaning, but completely misguided. Making Billy autistic fits since a lot of his behavior fits, but I can't really recall any indication that the character was gay. (At most he would be asexual.) And like slashandbones said, making him both gay AND autistic would be too much for the movie to juggle. Also I think Hollywood needs to focus on making new gay characters instead of retroactively making old ones gay, but that's just me.
@ariwl17 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Billy had a lot going on already and was easily the heart of the film. Trini needed something to connect her to the audience because she had practically nothing otherwise.

I knew about the scene but when I saw it, as well as when I think on how Trini's family interacted with her (particularly her mother and the hint of her being something akin to a 'military brat' - ie moving a lot or at least saying she does) I wonder if she's one who dislikes having a label because she isn't sure, or because her mother pushes to have that 'box' so she has her checkoff list of 'how to talk to my daughter' down - like 'ok, she's queer, that means I have this talk' or "ok, she's not queer, that means this". Also, her 'playing' with Kim at the Obvious Product Placement (with the cut cameo of the OG Pink and Green in the background) only adds to the idea that Kim is kinda someone she likes, or at least might like. I also wanted to add for Rita Repulsa - if it helps - that her original Japanese person was a woman in charge who sang a lot, did musical numbers with her minions, and was overall nice to them. So...a little different from before but yes, always good to know. look up her song and dance, it's great.

Rantasmo, have you watched any of the Super Sentai japanes series that were the basis for Power Rangers? Like anime, it was a introduction for many people in the West to japanese pop culture views in queer people. One of this shows, Changeman ( the first of four Super Sentai to come here for Brasil, were it got very popular, premiering some years before the Power Rangers) has a character called Shima, who is an alien with a female body and a strong male voice. It would be interesting your coments on that, you can find the show on KZfaq with his brasilian portuguese dub.

I was actually really disappointed that the movie didn't go all the way and include a gay romance. I mean if they were going to go all the way and make the characters literal "Teenagers With Attitude" (something a lot of fans including myself were worried would make the heroes seem unlikable) and made them as developed as they could, they should've made that detail of her character a bit more layered. Or at least have a resolution. I mean this was made in 2016 for god's sake, considering Trump's presidency was an up-and-coming nightmare nobody expected, it would've been great for kids close to questioning age to have a reminder that gay people can be heroes too. First gay superhero on film and that fact (in film) is reduced to a footnote.

This is a great video! The one thing I wish you'd included was Trini's line that happens right after her meaningful silence- which is something to the affect of "My parents are normal and they believe in labels." The specific reference to believing or not believing in labels is a common allusion to bisexuality, but even that (already vague allusion) is left notably vague because of how non-specific Trini is about her life and her situation. Do you have any thoughts about this? Thank you! And thank you for the video! :D

I had to go back and look up some Power Rangers Time Force clips because, in a series that had a very large plot around the romance of the two main leads, I would have never believed the two never kissed. But you're right. There's a scene where they were about to kiss, and there a few scenes where they obviously should have kissed (including one REALLY awkward moment in Wild Force where one of the actors leaned in for a kiss but the other one just kind avoided the kiss and snuggled instead) but they never actually did. That is utterly bizarre to me.

Marley Gilliam I think that it's heading in a Kim/Jason as per the first movie BUT if we get female Tommy (which I wouldn't mind, heck, the original Green Ranger in Japan was the Red Ranger's brother and the Yellow Ranger was male, so it's not like this franchise doesn't have a history of making changes in iterations) it could go Tommy/Trini :)
@irondragonmaiden7 жыл бұрын
Giovanni A as one of the older people who grew up with the show (my gods, it's been years), I also love the Mighty Morphin' Kimberly/Tommy, one of my first OTPs even. However, since the Power Rangers franchise is all about changing characters and gender bending and changing backstories and all that, I can appreciate that this new movie series is an Alternate Universe (just like classic MMPR is an Alternate Universe version of Zyuuranger without the time traveling rangers ;) ) So I don't mind not getting Tommy/Kimberly because they're different people. Heck, this new Kim made me think of Buffy more than anything (the looks, the fashion style, the mean girl who changes into a good person storyline, even the way she speaks...), so I see them as different characters. Trini is also different from the zen Trini Kwan. So it all works for me. So far, I'm really liking this new iteration while still loving the old one :)

I did not grow up watching Power Rangers, but I went to the movie with my best friend because she did. I was surprised at how much fun I had, and I think that it was a great reboot! I agree with your commentary about Trini's sexuality and how it was handled. I don't want to blame Nickelodeon, but there was similar ambiguity regarding Korra and Asami's relationship in the series finale of Legend of Korra. Then again... was the movie rated PG-13? so, i haven't seen the reboot yet. while i'm glad to hear the Teenagers with Attitude finally got some damn attitude, i was put off by the general "DC-ing" and the Iron Ranger suits. thanks to the reception, i'm more willing to give it a chance. my big question is one that might've already been asked, but bears repeating; David Yost left the series because of the harassment, so why wasn't Billy the one "retconned" to be homosexual? i don't mean this as a slight to Trini, either, since she (and Zach, actually) were less developed on the show, and Trini was apparently close enough to Billy that she often translated his tech talk. she could still be ambiguous or more overt if Billy came put to her first, and she could share her experiences and help him find comfort in his own identity. ...granted, i'm a heterosexual male, so i'm fully aware that i might not know what i'm talking about. if my suggestion is wrong or problematic, i apologize for being a blithering ignorant.

A couple of things I would like to shine some light on. In the reboot, Trini's mom is played by actress Erica Cerra. She is most famous for her role Jo Lupo on Eureka. The super hot, super kick ass deputy, that was into nerds. Lets just say shes a bit of an iconic character for Scifi loving lesbians. Most of us know that Power Rangers is made using stock footage from the Japanese Show, Super Sentai. On Super Sentai, The Yellow Ranger is often male. So even though they used the same stock footage, the yellow rangers gender was still swapped. The Yellow ranger was originally going to be played by Audri Dubois. The character was originally Hispanic and heavily queer coded.

Although you probably already have done something like this (I'll have to check past installments), it would be interesting to hear a "Comics Needs More Gay" bit. Recently, for example, Iceman (from the X-Men) came out as gay. There are, of course, two camps on this: One has no problems with it, and the other is against it. As for myself, I am against it, but simply because of the 'out of nowhere-ness' of it. He has shown interest in women before (the Iceman that came out as gay was a past version of himself brought to the present [along with younger versions of all the core group] by beast because....Comics Are Weird!! ^_^). Most recently, as I recall, he was attempting to have a relationship with Kitty Pryde, before her lover came back from the dead (because X-Men). I think that, if they wanted to make any X-Man gay, they should have went with Nightcrawler. Still the same problems with showing hetero tendacies before, but I have read he has a strong gay fanbase, and you could play even more with the whole 'disliked because of who he is' thing (now he's a Gay Demon!!! ^_^).

Here's a thing that I actually never understand: Why is it that most gay icons are female? Nothing wrong with it, I'm just wondering why, in general, gay males would gravitate towards females as gay icons rather than other gay males or just males in general. Could it be because of the mass media portrayal of homosexuals as foppish divas or did that portrayal come into existence because of who we chose our icons to be? I'm legit curious about this and google keeps failing me.

The straight male identity is one that gay men often come into conflict with, being as there's a significant social pressure to be straight (or at least straight acting) and gay men generally have to assert their own identity independent of that. That often makes it hard to look up to straight men as role models. As for gay men... there *were* no gay men in media when I was growing up in the 90s, up to the mid 2000s. We had Will and Jack from Will and Grace, but that was basically it - that, or a long line of villains (evil) or gay best friends (secondary). So gay culture grew up around powerful, rebellious women, because doing what you want to do in the face of societal pressure to conform to expectations is a powerfully resonant message to a lot of gay men. So we learned to venerate fabulous women. I don't know if this will necessarily continue, since these days, it's reasonably easy to find out gay celebrities and public figures. I don't have to sublimate my desire to see myself represented in media with female divas - there are more than enough gay men, if you know where to look. So I'm curious if diva culture will die out.

Yeah, Trini in the movie was kinda problematic for me. It felt like they were afraid to make her gay and thus didn't confront the issue entirely. That said, it's also a two hour movie so there's only so much you can cram in and there's four other main characters we need to learn about, a villain running a muck, and an alien guy with a wisecracking robot trying to inform the audience with a landslide of backstory so I can understand that maybe they just weren't able to add in as much as they initially wanted.

I know this is random but I thought to ask. I watch the show Lip sync battle and a lot of the winners is guys who end up cross dressing and singing girly songs. It usually to the shock of the host and the audience. There was a battle that even had a kiss between two men. I like the shows over the top ness. But I worry that the constant use of drag as comedy and shock is exploitative and funny for the wrong reasons. Or am I over reacting and this is just funny and drag acceptance? I would love to hear your thoughts.

+Holy Guava Matt Baume did a great video a while back that you might find interesting: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/frpyq6un07i7pKc.html This stuff gets complicated, though. I do know that there have been a number of criticisms of drag culture as it relates to trans women. I dunno if that's the sort of thing you had in mind?

no wonder I was so into power rangers as a kid. I was never super into Rita Repulsa but I would jump from couch to couch pretending to be a power ranger.

Power Rangers really does need more recognition for its efforts at diversity. We've never had a Ranger with a Jewish or Muslim background, but Power Rangers is still a show that regularly features men and women of Asian, Latin-American, and Black backgrounds on a regular basis--dating back to 1992, even. The original show was campy as all hell and by all accounts, those teenagers wouldn't have had time to sleep with all the charity they did... but think about the message that sends to kids: give back to the community. Volunteer. Expand your social circle. Being that I'm not queer, I've never considered Rita as a queer icon... but that's certainly cool. There's nobody quite like Rita Repulsa. :D Hey, Rantasmo, how about a "Pokémon Needs More Gay" next? James and Jesse are plenty queer-coded, and Meowth's original VA was transgender!

Actually, I think there was a Jewish Ranger on SPD (Bridge I think) based on a one-off line where he declared that it would Hanukkah come early in relations to a new bike.

Levitz9 I forgot which series it was, but I remember there was a blind power ranger,who was very reminiscent of Dare Devil.

To be fair to the screenwriters, they probably worried about how much was too subtle and how much was spoon feeding the audience to the point of insulting their intelligence. GRRM left a lot of clues in the books that made it blatantly obvious that Renly and Loras were a gay couple. Heck, he even worried that the whole Rainbow Guard part was too obvious and that he was hitting his readers over the head with it. Cue the tv series where Renly and Loras are making out and fucking on screen and there's a lot of angry (oblivious) fanboys saying "Since when are they gay?!" Cue GRRM (and a lot of writers) face-palming and going "You guys seriously thought they were praying all of those hours every single day in Renly's tent?!" I guess the moral of the story is, be blatant for the morons.

But Bulk and Skull are so gay right? They're dress would not be out of place in a 90's gay bar, and they're soooo committed to each other.

I like the colours and dryness of the first few Power Ranger seasons. We finally got a decent movie. Too bad it did not get a sequel.

I think Trini is more bisexual than flat-out gay in the new Power Rangers movie. The scene where she and Kimberly have a food fight could be construed as Trini subtly flirting with Kimberly, but on the other hand Zach hits on Trini relentlessly through the movie and Trini doesn't seem to mind it rather than completely shutting him down. I'm thinking Trini likes girls in general better than boys, but if the right boy comes along she probably wouldn't say no to him. An example of this type of character would be Sarah Lance from "Arrow" and "Legends of Tomorrow," who sleeps with a LOT of women and had a full-on relationship with Nyssa Al Ghoul, but who also genuinely loved Oliver Queen and Captain Cold, though the affection for the latter is only shown in a single scene... right as Cold was about to die.

Terrible Idea For An Ep That I Still Want To Happen: Futanari Needs More Gay... ...Nope, I ain't kidding, tho rather it's more like "Needs More Trans," because given the WEALTH of controversy over that in the trans/inersex community and the litany of unfortunate tropes that show up (Which I can give you a rundown on if you want!), that could make for a legit interesting/weird ep.

Ok I'm gonna sound really annoying, buuuuut if you need another topic to do a "needs more gay episode" Overwatch might be a good thing to look into, especially given the mascot character has been confirmed to be at least Bisexual
