Just rebuilt two of these type of boxes. Much easier to simply remove the complete sector shaft and cover, replace the seals and snap ring, clean the rust from the shaft and re install. Those boxes have not changed much at all. Mine are both roughly 50 years old. Saginaw 800 style box.
@gr8fish68
@gr8fish68 3 жыл бұрын
After removing your snap-ring, from the sector shaft if your lines are hooked up, or can be hooked up you can blow out your old seal with hydraulic pressure just by bumping the engine over. Then you are not risking damaging your shaft or housing. simple cheat if you don't want to remove the shaft from the box,the way that it should be done.

Your welcome Mike! The prices were not bad for what I got. The seals and snap rings were much better quality then I've gotten in the past from the auto parts stores. I'm finding more and more parts for better prices than the aftermarket. Its always worth the phone call to know for sure!

All you need to do is remove the 4 bolts on top of the box and pull the shaft out. Then the seals come out very easy. Just make sure you keep everything straight when you put it back together. I agree that the lower seal is backwards. I put mine back in the other way.

The outer seal was mounted correct. it´s just a dustseal, and by that it is mounted so the dust is kept out. My S10 -96 had a factory steeringbox and had the outer seal mounted as yours, which is the correct way.

Just found a similar problem working on my sons 92 GMC Sierra 1500. Was a remanufactured steering box also but imagine my surprise when I found the Torrington Bearing wasn't pushed in far enough which only left room for one single lipped seal and a mickey mouse spacer under the circlip instead of the 2x seal stack with a single lip then a washer then the bottom double lipped seal followed by another spacer then the circlip. Finally the dust cap gets pushed in against the circlip. Be warned, some remanufactured Steering Boxes are obviously assembled wrongly with incorrect parts.Anybody stupid or dumb enough to do this sort of botched repair on a vehicles steering system should be prosecuted. These 800 series are well designed Steering boxes and will serve you well if assembled and adjusted correctly.... which is another story entirely.

I just rebuilt mine, it was really smooth at first but I notice it was building pressure on the power steering reservoir, I turned it a few times and it blew out all of the fluid from the steering knuckle. It’s on a 89 c2500 and I recently ls swapped the truck. Using a 5.3 power steering pump shouldn’t affect it right? I’m still trying to figure out what went wrong, any input would really help
@JohnSadlersAutoRepair
@JohnSadlersAutoRepair 8 ай бұрын
Wow! I would look online and see if you can find out how much pressure the 2 different pumps put out. If there is a difference I would get the exact pump made for it. You might have enough room to remove the Pitman Arm and the seals that blew out. Make sure the snap ring didn't break or come off, it holds the first seal in place.

You really should rewatch your video. Your explanation of the backward placed seal was confusing as hell and it was never clear which way was right. You held it both ways when explaining it was wrong. That really could have helped right about now because I have that same seal that didn't come with the kit so I figured mine was similar. The seal that you said was backwards is the one I need to know which way it goes in. Please explain when you can.

I know this is an older video. But that outer dirt seal was installed correctly. If you have fluid leaking it’s not because of your outer dirt seal failing. It’s because your inner oil seal has failed. If your oil seal is doing it’s job correctly then oil shouldn’t even make it out to your dirt seal.
@bobbyfox1312
@bobbyfox1312 4 жыл бұрын
Now there is a really good chance that since it didn’t have the dust seal installed that dirt and water corroded the shaft which caused the outer dirt seal to fail which then caused dirt to make it to your oil seal and caused it to fail

Is this comparable to the steering box on a C2500 Chevrolet? The bottom shaft that connects to the pitman arm by a large bolt is leaking the seal, which I assume is purely just from ware, but is it possible to replace the seal on the bottom pitman shaft and fix the leak without full replacement?

V8 For A Heart look around between 2 minutes and 20 seconds and further and it will show the seals how I took them out so you just put them back in the same way. You can also look on Google Images and there's lots of pictures showing the steering boxes in the positioning of the seals. You just have to make sure to keep the seal straight if you have a long piece of pipe the same diameter as one of the seals you can use that to tap the seal in with and we'll go in between the steering shaft. You may even be able to find some plastic PVC pipe from Home Depot with a close enough diameter to work and remember a snap ring will go in after that and keep it in place.

I worked in a dealer for 10 years and have owned my own shop for the last 6 1/2 years, and I could not agree more. I end up still having to use a/m parts regularly due to the cost difference, but it's almost to the point where I need to refuse anything that's not OEM. I'm so sick of the inferiority of the a/m parts world. They really need to start getting their shit together.

Greg Robinson I won't buy anything from A1 Cardone ever again. A sales rep from O'Reilly Auto Parts told me they dropped the whole Cardone line do to so many returns.

I put a overhauled Cardone steering gearbox into my 67‘ Riviera. It stayed there for 1 hour - because the play was much worse than with the original one.... But at least it was not leaking 😜

He's wrong about the outer seal its not in backwards!! Its in that way to keep water and dirt from entering into the box!! The upper seal is there to seal the power steering fluid in the box!!! If you put the outer seal in the way he says it goes, and you submerge the box accidentally it will fill with water!! The outer seal goes in with sealing facing out!!

1:20 question about that. I'm reinstalling the seals, so should the groove end be facing down towards the snap ring? Or away? Thanks.

Hi Paul, sorry for the late reply. The flat part of the seal should be facing you and then you put the snap ring on

My 98 1500 Express van is going through a quart of power steering fluid every 1500 miles for years. It's got the original steering box 170k miles. I've replaced both hoses ( high side was leaking causing steam) but the box still leaks. Looks like it's coming from the steering column end not the pitman arm side underneath. Is that possible? I've tried stop leak which has worked on other things like axle seals but so far it hasn't worked on my van. Looks like the Hummer uses the same box as a GM van.

Florescent lights pulse at a higher rate than the human eye can see. But it can be seen though a camera. Kinda like an old tube TV or computer monitor if you look at it though a camera you can see it rolling. Also eagles can see the pulse of a florescent light. It's like a strobe light to them. That's why when in captivity they use incandescent or led light

So is it serious driving the vehicle while leaking
@JohnSadlersAutoRepair
@JohnSadlersAutoRepair 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Muli, if the leak is small and you keep the fluid level full you can wait for awhile. Example: you fill the power steering up and 2 days later you here the noise when the fluid level gets low ( whining, werring sound ) and you fill it up right away you can drive like that until you fix it. When the pump gets low on fluid and makes that noise all the time ,then it will damage the pump and steering gear box.

Informative but the lighting was terrible. Change that flickering bulb or adjust the camera speed.
@MoneyManHolmes

Looks like maybe LED lighting causing the flicker. I was more disturbed by the AI-based image stabilization that made everything appear to morph and warp around. I’m sure he has probably fixed these issues on his newer videos. Did you get your seal replaced or did you buy a rebuilt assembly? I will be doing mine soon.

You should really edit this video or description, as many of the people in your comment section have said.....the outer seal is actually a dust wiper to keep contamination out and the lip should be facing OUTWARDS. Not everyone reads the comments section and may install it incorrectly due to your video.
