Pras Talks First Fugees Album Only Selling 12 Copies, Dropping Out of Yale

Fugees founder Pras sat down with VladTV to speak about the history of the group, and how he dropped out of Yale to pursue a career in music. He explained that the group initially started out consisting of himself, Lauryn Hill, and another unnamed girl. He said the third girl backed out of the group after they didn't get a deal after graduating from high school, and she went on to go to college. Pras added that Wyclef later joined the group.
While he was enrolled in one of the most prestigious schools in the U.S., Yale, Pras explained that he was more passionate about pursuing a career in music, so he decided to drop out and chase his dream with Lauryn and Wyclef.
After getting several offers from record labels, Pras said the Fugees decided to take the least lucrative deal from Ruffhouse because he liked the direction they were going in and what they represented. After releasing their debut album, Blunted on Reality, to a dismal sale of twelve copies, the label wanted to drop the group. However, Pras said several people at the label pushed for them to have a second chance, which produced their highly successful second album, The Score.
Check out more of what Pras had to say in the above clip.

+v3z still, you're saying if you missed the opportunity to be in a legendary group like that by just a few years, you would be fine with it just cause you're financially better off? who knows, had she been in the group, things might have gone differently and they might be doing well right now

6:20 What's so "impressive" about that Vlad? I swear, it feels as if Vlad is talking to these guests from a "visitor of Hip-Hop and Black American culture's" point of view. It's like.. he loves this Hip-Hop culture that we Black Americans invented from slavery, the black power movement, and the civil rights movement BUT he's still... fascinated by the ACTUAL black PEOPLE. For instance, a white rapper dropping out of Yale to rap is not that impressive... right Vlad? That particular guy was just "following his dreams". But Pras? "This negro dropping out of school to rap? I expected as much, but him leaving YALE? Hell, him even being accepted to YALE? Then leaving Yale to be a rapper? Wow, Yale? Impressive" That's how you sound Vlad. I USED to think you was only being like that with Lord Jamar. Your interviews are very telling.

I think praz is still salty about how things ended with the group cause if I recall I remember him saying many times before that him and wyclef were really blood related cousins. but whatever. I remember copping the first album from Columbia house bargain bin back in the day for 99 cents. it was truly garbage. except for vocab and nappy heads. but they did a complete 360 for the second album.. 96 was a good year for rap..all eyez on me, the score, it was written, so many classic albums came out that year. and i think i'm probably the only nigga in these comments to ever see the fugees live in concert before they broke up. the first ever free rap concert in nyc given by the mayor at that time rudy ghouliani..hoodstock 96' up in harlem...shit was classic , even though it ended up being a stampede at the end of the concert thanks to wu tang clan but I will always remember seeing the fugees perform one of their last concerts ever. we definitely need a fugees reunion.

Mad props to Praz for that Skid Row documentary. Not to mention the movie Go For Broke. One of the funniest hood flicks I've seen in a long time.
