That is a crazy amount of flashing in that water jacket, never seen the likes of that before. Deburring, flattening the manifolds, port matching, smoothing oil flow areas (we would use DP 40 epoxy primer on internal areas) are all important steps. Really looking forward to the build Trevor Cheers buds

G'day Rick, yeah its pretty nasty in there, its a known issue with these engines. Pretty Shit that the previous engine builder never addressed it, considering how much was spent on it. Cheers Mate.

To clean up those water passage flashings you'll need a die grinder with an extended shaft. Sumake makes die grinders with 17" and 20" extension shafts. BUT, nobody has them in stock. You can get to some of the flashings through the freeze plugs above them and from rear of block, but you need to sleeve/protect them or they will leak. Ideally, you'd use a horizontal boring mill and run an inch and a half gun drill through there front to back.

Thanks for the great advice Mate, I think Rotary Burrs on a Die Grinder will be my weapon of choice. I have a heap of extensions that I made on the lathe for them. Should get me through there no worries. Good info on protecting the freeze plug holes, definite trap for young players. Cheers Mate.

Yeah, cylinders 5 and 6 were almost completely blocked on my replacement block. There was enough space to fit a #2 pencil through...that's it. Used a mix of a head porting kit and a bunch of long stemmed carbide bits to clean it out. There were a few moments that I was questioning if I was doing enough or if I overdid some areas. Didn't help that it was my first time ever doing it.

G'day Mate, yes, no surprise those rear cylinders often run hot hey. Just started doing the same, head porting kit, carbide burrs, mounted stones, long extensions etc. Its gnarly as hell in there. I hear ya with regard to enough , too much, not enough. I guess i'll just have to suck it & see. How did you go in the end, any issues. Cheers Mate.

@@TheAussieShed Well honestly, I’ve never had to do anything like this before so I was very cautious the whole time but it went from barely anything going through to about 25mm in diameter. I was told by Specialty Z that was a decent size to have as a goal to aim for. It took me a couple of days and I may have bothered a few people with a lot of questions and pictures throughout but it ended in success. Can’t complain too much.

It would be interesting to know if the coolant was still moving ok through the casting flash because if it was, then it would be getting good heat transfer with all of the extra surface area. As I have always attested with many things in life, as long as it can handle the amount of head it is likely to be better ;)

Personally, I feel the extra surface area created by the casting flash would be irrelevant, compared to the reduction of turbulent flow/ increase of laminar-attached flow achieved by removing it. Not to mention overall coolant flow volume to particularly the rear cylinders, path of least resistance etc. I get where your coming from though, in this case I feel removal is the best option. Remember, the Nissan engineers would have designed the coolant passages without the casting flash, it is unfortunately just a by product of the casting process. Appreciate the comment. Cheers Mate.

Why not use the Polar Engineering v-band manifolds?

Main Reason is I have these here & they are very decent manifolds + Turbos etc. If I changed to the Polar Manifolds, firstly there's the cost $$$$ & it would mean changing so much other stuff, also $$$$. I have V Band Manifolds on my TT VQ37 that I built some years ago, If I sell that at some point I may make a set for this. Realistically though if I were to go to that effort with this I would probably go Single Turbo. Cheers Mate.

@@TheAussieShed Sure, I get it. It will still be one of the very best Z32's in the world. I really like your attention to details, and that you got the skills to make it your way. I did go with the Polar manifolds myself. I like the idea of an OEM+ Z32 that is modernized in just the right way, and that also includes the twin turbo setup.
