My first time growing the S-5000 commercial Shiitake strain from Mycelium Emporium. Handling my blocks during the "popcorn" phase of incubation led to pre-mature pinning before they had a chance to brown up, but this strain showed it's resiliency and still produced beautiful mushrooms for me off of white blocks. Other Shiitake strains I've grown in the past weren't so forgiving, so I think this strain would be an excellent choice for new growers.

Just found you today and have been watching a lot of your videos, great channel & thanks for all the awesome info! I followed North Spore's instructions & put my shiitake block in the fridge for 48 hours & cold shocked it, then took it out of it's bag and submerged it in cold water for 4 hours, it's in the automated monotub now and is covered with pins, lots of them! I have some pink oyster spawn on the way, blue oyster growing now. Thanks again for all the great info, I subscribed & look forward to your next video.

Hopefully you get a bunch of good Shiitakes, as far as eating goes, they're definitely one of my favorites. I'm starting a new grow with this S5000 strain shortly to test out some new things. Glad you found me and thanks for watching.

Done a ton of experimenting with shiitake 75. Great results with some unexpected substrate mats. Spend coffee grounds, wild bird seed and.. surprisingly... bamboo. Fun hobby.

Thanks for the video, that’s a nice harvest nonetheless! My first attempt was with a couple of blocks, strain 3790 which is supposed to give 90% of its yield at the first flush. They browned entirely and where covered with shiitakes! This was supplemented substrate, not sure how that may play a role in the browning. I don’t know the exact formula because it was before I started doing my own mix. I have a handful of new blocks incubating currently, some already popcorning. Will let you know if there’s something special happening with this second attempt. These are made with a 20% supplementation - alfalfa pellets. The mycelium looks pretty aggressive so far!

20% alfalfa pellets -- do you know how that compares to an equivalent amount of wheat bran? I use organic bran but alfalfa is so much cheaper!
@MathieuGoldstein
@MathieuGoldstein Жыл бұрын
@@carlfranz2046 That’s a good question. I did some research and for what I’ve found, wheat bran has a C:N ratio of ~19, where alfalfa pellets appears to be around 15. These values may vary a bit according to sources, but that’s what I’ve found. So it seems for our culture the supplementation is slightly higher with alfalfa.

Love your videos! I’m just getting started with this hobby, about to harvest my first blue oysters today. Concerning shiitakes, I have heard other people say after the first flush, the block should be totally dried out over a few weeks, then rehydrated in water overnight, then given a couple whacks for stimulation, fridged overnight, then back into fruiting for second flush. Ever tried this method? Wonder if it’s worth the time
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms Жыл бұрын
I have done that method with several strains of Shiitake. It works, but it's a lot of work. If you have a good commercial strain they will do well without going to all the trouble I think.

I followed 100monkey's tips for shiitake (dunk and cold shock, then slap) and had about a pound in two flushes from a really small block, so it worked well. I'm surprised you don't dunk the blocks at all. Could you try to compare methods and see if that does any difference in yield or speed for fruiting?
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms Жыл бұрын
I've done the dunk/slap many times, 8 hours in cold water. Cold shock isn't necessary in my experience after initiating the first flush. It's really strain dependent, this 5000 strain will give you two nice flushes without going to all that trouble. I've done four flushes with S-75 using the dunk technique. It works if you're just growing a few blocks for yourself and you want to go for several flushes and don't mind the work, but not really worth it if growing on a commercial scale.

There is a strain called "straw". I know Mycelium Emporium has it. Also "S75" does well on straw from what I hear.

I have a question for you. How l long will substrate last after pc before inoculating? Making extra bag for later use.
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms Жыл бұрын
I don't PC any of my substrate bags. I just do pasteurization for 99% of my grows. I always inoculate my bags within a day. I know mycology suppliers often ship uninoculated sterilized sub bags with good success, so I would guess a week or two is fine.

Me too, like in Earth Angel's videos, those blocks are nuts. I will say that for fruiting off of white blocks, the S5000 did much better for me than S-75. I'll see if I can hopefully get them to brown up for me next time.

Nothing wrong with growing oysters. They're delicious. Wondering if I should bother with growing shiitakes due to colonization times and that the lgs sells them $10/lb
@RenegadeMushrooms
@RenegadeMushrooms Жыл бұрын
I enjoy growing them, they are challenging in their own way but to me it's like tomatoes. For the effort you put in you could just buy them, but the one's you grow yourself always taste better. There is a definite difference between a "just picked" Shiitake and a 5 day old Shiitake.

Hello just wanted to ask one thing. Do the blocks need some air to complete browning or keep them sealed? I read somewhere you can make a slit in a bag to speed things up. Any suggestions? Best regards

@@RenegadeMushrooms oh thanks a lot. Should I just make some holes innthe bag and cover them with micropore tape or just cut 2 slits on sides with no worries? I read that strong light also helps, is this true?
@RenegadeMushrooms

@@mrnobody1456 Once you're fully colonized, your mycelium should be able to keep the contams at bay so just cutting slits would be fine if you want to try it. I use two 6500K LEDs over my grow table and it works fine for me, that's all I know about light with Shiitakes.
