Coco Montoya spent a decade holding down the guitar chair for John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Since then, Montoya has toured the world blowing minds and blowing speakers. The southpaw bluesman hung with PG before his Nashville City Winery gig to give a glimpse into his road-worn axes and his “transitional” pedalboard.
Montoya’s No. 1 is a “Frankenstrat” from Guitars-R-Us in Hollywood. It’s loaded with Bill Lawrence L250 humbuckers, and strung up with Dunlop .010-.046 strings. He uses Dunlop Tortex Medium .88 mm picks.
This 40-watt Carr Slant 6V provides Montoya with his ear-splitting volume. The 6V6-powered amp feeds a Fender 4x10 cabinet and a Dr. Z 2x10 cabinet-both loaded with Eminence Ragin Cajun speakers. Thankfully, there’s a plexiglass baffle to save any innocent bystanders in the front few rows.

15 years ago, in Rochester NY, I saw Coco Montoya play live. I was a tiny little six-year-old in a sea of adults, but somehow Coco was able to see me, so he threw his pick to me and I somehow caught it. Coco, if you ever see this, I want you to know I asked for a guitar that christmas, and by 12-years-old I had a steady paying weekly gig at a blues bar. I owe ya :)

Coco is the real deal, man. Great player and puts on a great show too. I had the pleasure and honor of opening for him at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, CA a few years back. Sweet man. John Bohlinger is thee best Rig Rundown interviewer as well!

I've had the pleasure of seeing Coco 3 times. One of the nicest, most humble, approachable, and talented players on the Planet. Always has time for his fans. I managed to catch him on a little break, and we just talked for about 10 minutes. No sense of being rushed, just 2 guys talking music. I hope I get to see him again while we're both still breathing.

What a great guy! Coco is a true class-act. It must have been about ten years ago when my grown son and I went to a Coco Montoya concert at a small club in Berwyn, Illinois called Fitzgerald's. For some strange reason, almost nobody was there. I think there were only about 6 or 8 people in the club including my son and I. I felt embarrassed that there was almost no audience for such a world class artist. My son and I sat at a table right in front of Coco. Now, many performers would put on a half-assed show with such a small audience but Coco performed as if he was in front of a full auditorium. What an honor to see him perform! I'll never forget it. It was like a private performance. Coco came across that night just as he does in this video. That is, modest, laid back, down to earth and, well, just a super nice guy. In a time when so many artists are on ego trips it's so refreshing to see such a great musician be such a nice person. One of my favorite blues songs of all time is Good Days Bad Days. In fact, I pulled it up on my system and I'm listening to it as I write this. It's beautiful. For anyone who hasn't heard it, do so right away. I have to see Coco perform again. He's truly one of the greats.

I can get that this may be a bit of a long shot, but can we try to get a Rig Rundown for the Gorillaz when they tour? They have a new album (_Humanz_) out and I think it'd honestly be really cool to see what gear they use, be it the actual characters (Noodle and Murdoc) or the dudes who play live with Damon Albarn (But actually seeing, even as holograms or whatever, would still be awesome)

Thanks for responding Vertex. I think all of your pedals are cheaply made. Ive seen and played one hands on (Boost, sounded fine, felt cheap) and ive heard feedback from people I trust on others. Just because you call yourselves "boutique" and "assemble" your products in the USA doesnt mean you get to charge "boutique" prices. Thats for builders that design there own pedals and build there own products (of high quality). Cheers

Vertex is what it is now, the guy was dishonest in the past but came clean. Now it's up to the buy to decide, and hopefully by trying out the product. though me personally I'll be be skeptical, circuit designs themselves can't be patented so there's no copyrights on the actual circuits themselves, and claiming authorship or ownership of these in any pedal company..

It sure feels like John is completely out of his element. These exchanges with the musicians are always so awkward. Everytime he reaches to grab someones guitar it is just so cringeworthy. His frat boy vibe looks to turn many of these guys off completely. I would love to see these rig rundowns done by someone that these guys are interested in speaking and sharing info with.

T.E. Witt I'm not disputing that necessarily. I just feel like the vibe is always so awkward when he does these things. I'm sure he is a great player. Just watch the facial expressions of the folks he interacts with. It's not a big deal just an observation.

haloskater244 - No disrespect was intended to downburst (I think you were just kidding around ya?). I just wanted to get clarification on his experience with the products. We're always making a concerted effort to improve the user experience of our products and if there's a legitimate issue, we want to know about it.
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 7 жыл бұрын
Hey greatvanzinni! Mason Marangella here, CEO/President of Vertex. The "conman" comment made by downburst is in reference to the Axis Wah product that I sold up until July of 2015, where I was purchasing Wah pedals directly from the BBE, re-branding them with Vertex aesthetics and doing some minor circuit changes, and re-selling at a substantial mark-up without disclosing the origins of the product, and publishing marketing material that said the product was made in-house when it was not. Although this wasn't representative of our other products, it called in to question all other pedals that we were legitimately manufacturing past, present, and future. All customers that purchased the Axis Wah, including dealers and international distributors were all issued a refunds, exchanges, credits, or rebates based on what was requested as restitution for each Axis Wah. You can learn more about the details on the The Gear Page here: www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/axis-wah-announcement-coming-clean.1477492 and on Reverb.com here: reverb.com/news/vertex-effects-after-the-axis-wah-scandal-a-conversation-with-mason-marangella .

@baseboardmatt
@baseboardmatt 7 жыл бұрын
TheDogpa I'm only complaining because this show is about what equipment the pros use. He doesn't even use Vertex effects. Only said he likes them and might use them in the future. It just seems covert and subversive to advertise this way. It's a trick. At least that's the way I see it. I've never seen this tactic used in any other Rig Rundown. I don't think I'm completely off base.

Look don't misunderstand me. I view the guy and his channel as invaluable. This is one of my favorite KZfaq channels and John is obviously an indispensable part of it... so technically he's one of my favorite people. Now, The first time I saw the channel, I'm looking at Chris... and he's this super low key soft spoken dude, and he just lets the artists talk. He knows what questions people are asking, He knows exactly what we want to know, and he's concise about asking, and let's us get to know our favorite musicians by being a little restrained. He's just the intermediary, and nothing more... and I liked that as an Audience member.... but John and perry are more enthusiastic and let more of their personalities shine through... which I dig, cuz they're obviously cool dudes....... but you don't get that until you follow the channel regularly, and I think it's easy for people to miss the interview quality cuz they're hit with the quirkiness of the interviewers so-cal stoned surfer vibe. Obviously, I don't mind cuz that's me.... as it is a lot of guys.... but it's not everyone, and it think it can come off distracting. But at the same time, he's John fuckin bohlinger, and he's the man, and we can either dig it or fuck off...... so in that sense, perhaps I contradict myself.
