+mrthompson878 The guage is light for how low the tune yes but because the neck scale is longer naturally the strings are tighter. Thats why they use the guage they do.

But the scale lenght is closer to a short scale bass at 29.4". And the dr strings are high tension... The Only thing i do not understand is the need for a low F.. that is the bassist domain..

I play drums in low tuned bands with 8 and 7 strings and learnt something from this about the neck lengths and the gauge of the strings. My guys use strings that are like bits of rope on the 8 strings. The 7 strings nearly have the same gauge as the Meshuggah 8 strings. Now I know why it all works the way it does and probably why so many guitar players find some of the Mesh stuff like Bleed so hard to pick! Bits of old rope VS bits of angel hair = normal band VS Meshuggah.

how does the computer know the song has finished? Maybe after a period of time preset for the end of a track's setting, it auto switches to the next track's first setting, ready to go? But.. how would it know the start of the track for timing for switching to the next setting? I swear the guy is just confused and he's actually using the 'B / F' midi controls to switch, but he is not considering 'he' is switching it 'it's laptop controlling!'. Meaning he is not pushing the button, he's pushing a midi button to make the laptop push the button lol. My guess anyway.

They have a backing track (synths, and the drummer has a metronome in one ear), this backing track is on a timeline, where you can set keyframes, that trigger certain switches.. The drummer has to use a metronome, because of the backing track, which is pre-recorded, so the backing tracks START and STOP at the right time. They don't push anything during their live shows.

So it is being triggered by a kick midi trigger perhaps, or a foot pedal by a guitarist or something? I figured there must be something to trigger by a human, too risky to try to do fully automated, as if you will start each track in a set at the exact same time each night :)

No, it is triggered by a PC running ableton or Cubase or whatever they use.. The track playing triggers the stuff.. It is FULLY AUTOMATED, they have a backup, maybe even a guy looking at the PC if something goes wrong.. It has become quite a standart technique

Michael Borg heavier strings are only good for lower tunings. otherwise they're too hard to bend and tiring to play.

Michael Borg on a super long scale length only a have step down. longer scale lengths allow for lighter strings at a higher tension

yeah I use 84 or 86 low on my 7 string, but I wouldn't go higher than 11 for the highest preferably. I try to go for a progressive tension rather than balanced, around 24 pounds on the low to around 18 ish on the high. I've used 13 highs before but unless you tune the high string quite low it will probably mess with the overall tension across the 6+ strings. I also use Circle K aka Kalium strings because they have a higher tension for the same gauge compared to other strings. I've enjoyed using Martin Bluegrass resonators previously and never really liked the sound of D'addario's, however in the late 90's they were the only easy way to get 80-82 gauge guitar strings. Sometimes buy the Zakk Wylde 70/72 boomers (I think they are 72 I forget) because I see them cheap sometimes in stores. Everything depends on the tuning you play in, I was doing weird tunings since I first started playing so I've experimented a lot with all sorts of odd and illogical string setups just to see what would happen.

You also need a higher action generally to not buzz all over the place, which is my bane being a heavy gauge guy for low tunings. I still kind of enjoy the opposite aesthetic also still though, 50-60 gauge strings for lower gauge with a floppier/bendier attack. The pitch bend can be interesting depending on the style of music and with certain effects/distortions. I remember being quite impressed with the sound of a 56 low string power chord detuned to D# or C# down an octave from standard, sooo floppy it sounded kind of unique.
