We are starting off another backyard transformation in this video as we frame the main deck area and begin to build the screen porch. Next up will be building the roof overtop of the screen porch and beginning to lay our deck boards. This backyard transformation project will also include a paver patio with fire pit and sitting wall. This backyard is going to be the ultimate outdoor living space!

Since you had your joists run along the tops of your girders, how did you install your support posts for the roof load?
@KhariVillela
@KhariVillela 3 ай бұрын
I was looking closely at the same thing because he glossed over this with “the posts are installed” and that was it. If you look closely, the roof posts are set in their own footers that attach to the rim joist.

Are the tall posts for the porch walls anchored to the ground as well? You described how the shorter 6x6 posts that support the deck were anchored to footings, but I'm curious how you connect the taller posts as well. Thanks!

I was also curious 🤣 Seems at the 12 minute mark, the first 4 main posts run fully down to the footings. Looks like for all the intermediate posts, they sandwiched them with another joist @ 5.5" in from the outside rim joists. The "intermediate" posts dont run below the joists at all...so we can only assume that...they ran lags in on either side?? Non issue i guess as theyre not techically 'load bearing.'

Look's good, but the 2x beams that support the floor joists on any exterior deck, should be covered with house wrap, or tape to keep water from penetrating between 2x material. Water will set in there, and rot the wood after about 10-15 year's.

Couple questions: 1 : I seen that you notched both the top plates at the beam pocket in the wall corner. Can you notch the top plate anywhere, because I have heard you cant notch it within so many feet of a corner, can you just throw a strap on it if you have to? 2: I seen that on that beam pocket, you left one of those corner studs running up all the way to the plate which made sense because your support posts sat inside the deck framing, so there was no need to notch it out. In NC, the posts are often sitting ON TOP of the deck framing, so if the deck framing ended flush with the house framing, would I be able to notch that corner stud out also, or is it necessary to move the posts in from the edge of the deck framing, frame the deck different, etc.
