Thank you Heidi. I haven’t grown snow peas for years. When I did it was for stir fry. Maybe I’ll consider planting some next year and add stir fry back into our meal plans. It’s easy to get into a rut and fix the same ol’ things. 😃

Thanks for the informative video. I am growing peas for the first time and when I tried to preserve store bought peas, they went in the freezer dry but turned to mush. I think because I used a zip lock bag and the condensation when thawing ruined them. So many videos tell you to blanch and freeze but to me that’s just freezing wet peas. Happy you mentioned about blanching. I am trying to get a crisp pea when coming out of storage. Will try vacuum sealing and dehydrating.

I never plant enough snow peas. We love snacking on them right out of the garden. When I do get some picked - I steam mine with potatoes. Guess I need to plant an extra row. Ours gets tall as well. He says only 4 feet and I remind him every year they start falling over on one side and breaking.

I try every year for snow peas. This year, thanks to that super mild spring, I actually grew them to pods. Usually it gets too hot too fast and the vines cook in our humidity and heat. Thank you for more great tips!!
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 4 жыл бұрын
Right, they do not like heat. We finally got a few days of decently warm weather and the young peas on the pods took off. Even picking twice a day, I have several maturing too quickly but I only need to pick enough to day for a little better than one half pint jar and I am done. The rest will be saved for seed and for feeding to the chickens

I'll be using my other glass jars like pickle jars to do this instead of canning jars. Love all your videos
@NS-pf2zc

I do that too. I specifically buy classico spaghetti sauce since they fit canning lids and that way you can get a seal. If I'm buying it anyway, at least until I can get enough tomatoes for us to make our own sauce, it might as well serve two purposes!

Thank you for the video. I don't have a lot of snow peas but I have froze a few. I have not done stir gets but thought if I get them out of the freezer a couple mins before we eat that I could put them on my salad in winter. I do that with cherry tomatoes that I half and freeze! I got my brake leader and they said my vacuum seal caps on the way. Yay! O just hot the regular mouth. Now to save for the wide mouth. Enjoy your week end. Nancy.

God bless you, sweet sister in Christ! I LOVE IT that you freeze in Mason jars, avoiding the use of plastic. It’s so good for your health AND the health of God’s beautiful creation. Do you have any tips on ORGANIZING your freezer with all of those glass jars. I think my butterfingers might accidentally hit something and shatter an entire shelf! Thanks so much!
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 3 жыл бұрын
No, not really on the video of organizing and it is unlikely I will ever show all my freezer like I do now show all my pantries and other places of food storage for my own safety but these go in a chest freezer on top of the motor section so they are not buried down at the bottom of the freezer nor are they on a top sliding basket like some of my other frozen items in jars

I really respect the teaching you are providing and greatly appreciate your videos. I am working on storing items following instructions from your site. I was wondering if you could give a suggestion about repacking items that came from Mother Earth Products (dried and freeze dried). In your opinion, do think their products that arrive in plastic should be repacked into glass for longer or safer shelf life?
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 4 жыл бұрын
When they are in mylar bags, I usually leave them be but if they come in plastic bags or containers, I repack them into jars: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p9GIZJeDqsvScnk.html

@RainCountryHomestead

If you are freezing them, there is no need to dehydrate. If you are putting them on a shelf in a pantry, then yes, you need to dehydrate

I love snow peas. I want to know if you rinse them first before freezing them? I saw your video on snow peas before where you used food saver to vacuum seal in bags then put them in paper bag. Have you decided glass jars are better vs that method? Seems like the bag would take up less space.
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
No, I do not rinse, no need since they grow up high away from dogs and chickens. I gave up on foodsaver for two reasons: it stopped working and yes, to get away from the plastic both for the sake of health and the cost.

Does vacuum sealing the glass jars prevent freezer burn? I would love to find an alternative to freezer bags (and taking the air out with a straw) but I'm hesitant. Do you do something to protect the glass in the freezer?
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 4 жыл бұрын
I have found no difference between vacuum sealing and not vacuum sealing frozen goods. I have never had freezer burn thus far on any of the fruit and vegetables I have frozen in jars without vacuum sealing and I have been doing that for a couple of years. Though I am not wrapping the half pint jars (partly because of their size and also where I am storing them in the main freezer, nothing there gets jostled around), I do regularly wrap my larger jars and I believe I show that here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLh9a6pltsiypIE.html

Green beans do a bit but cook up good. The peas, I have not noticed them being rubbery but they cook up so much better than the ones I had blanched many years ago. Those were just nasty

A trick I learned was to let frozen veggies thaw before quickly stir frying them. It doesn't work as well with everything, but I thought it's worth passing along!

I was wondering if I put beans or rice in a quart mason jar and remove the air with my food saver can I then place the jar in the freezer? I’d like to dedicate one of my freezers to this if it is wise to do it this way for rice beans dry milk etc
@dl9617
@dl9617 4 жыл бұрын
I should mention that I meant dry beans. Thank you
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 4 жыл бұрын
If the rice and beans are both dry, there is no reason to put in the freezer once vacuum sealed. Both with keep just fine on a shelf as would the dry milk. I have never frozen any such items.

Just curious, why not freeze the peas and then put them in a freezer bag to save space?
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 2 ай бұрын
Because I prefer to use glass whenever possible. It is safer as far as any fear of chemicals leaching into the food and can be reused over and over. Just a matter of choice. Each needs to do what works best for them

Why not save the seeds.
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 4 жыл бұрын
Renee Brown I do save the seeds but not until I am done putting up what I need first. If you allow them to go fully to seed too soon, the plants die off sooner meaning less of a harvest
