When some of the team here at The Malt Miller started home brewing they were gifted starter bundles with various equipment in. These included Pressure Barrels and whilst the concept of a barrel which you can carbonate and serve your beer from, which is affordable and accessible, sounds great, in reality these systems have some issues with reliability.
With the introduction of the more affordable pressure rated fermenters hitting the market we had a lightbulb moment and thought how we could bundle some of these products together to bring the concept of the pressure barrel into the modern era of home brewing.
In this video Rakey and Stiffo show you how this system works, with a Chubby PET Pressure Fermenter at the heart of the system.

This video couldn't have come at a better time. I'm due to brew my first batch of beer soon, using the 30l chubby and a beer kit. Brilliant!👍🏻

I wish this had been around when i started homebrewing. Its a great set-up. It might be the only equipment you'd ever need, but if the upgrade bug bites the equipment will always be useful. Great stuff.

You young ‘uns! I started home-brewing in 1977! Still doing it now. Got some lovely Coopers’ dark ale I’m drinking currently. I still use kits, (lack of space) vats & pressure barrels. S30 CO2 injectors. No leaks!

I still use pressure barrels for cask beers, corny kegs for typical keg style beers, and have never had issues until the last two, a blonde ale and a Yorkshire bitter where the caps cracked and split. I think it was the extreme heat we've just had that caused an increase in pressure and cracked the top. I am setting up a regulator and adaptor system to allow me to connect to my bar area's gas system and I will be installing a hand pump serve the beer with, the CO2 is mainly to replace the beer, stopping a vacuum. I do like the option you've demonstrated though

Nice idea. Would this work with beers that had a bigger dry hop? Wondering if having the hops from that sitting at the bottom over a long period would affect the taste? i.e. would they start getting grassy tasting?
@themaltmiller8438
@themaltmiller8438 10 ай бұрын
It will Depend on how much you add, but yes it could start to go grassy

Starting home brewing in the 70’s and never had a successful brew using pressure barrels, always bottled up to a few years ago. Amazed these things are still around.

Outstanding clip gentlemen as I’ve just taken delivery of this very kit from yourselves of which I’m incredibly pleased with, could I just ask if you have a link to the best way to de-pressurise the vessel for putting in dry hops?
@themaltmiller8438
@themaltmiller8438 10 ай бұрын
Sorry, no link but the way you would do so would be to pull the PRV ring and that would dump the CO2 from the vessel, you can then unscrew the lid assembly and drop in your hops. After this, reassemble the lid, close the PRV and then either let the gas bills back up naturally or add in some extra CO2 using the regulator and CO2 bulbs 👍🏻

Hi Guys, I brought this kit and its amazing, already put it to test BUT as I'm using it in my "shed" - its cold, do I need to heat the barrel? The yeast has kicked off. The pressure has been held back, finally to about 8 psi......... do I need to heat it to about 22 degrees C?
@themaltmiller8438
@themaltmiller8438 8 ай бұрын
Ideally for an ale yeast you want to be in the 18-20c range. If you add a heating wrap like this one (www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product/fermentation-heating-wrap-belt-with-velcro-strap-30watts/) you can heat the beer whilst fermenting. Add a temperature controller such as this ( www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product/inkbird-temperature-controller/ ) and you'll be able to set the controller to control the temperature. Perfect in the colder winter months and then in the summer buy a cheap second hand undercounted fridge and the controller can do both heating and cooling for you, watch this video for an idea of how to do this (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pap8qaimv5rVdaM.htmlsi=vae1fi7TwiNb1YlS)

Just to clarify (daft lassie question inbound!): the pressure in the Chubby builds up naturally from fermentation? Or do you sometimes have to use a bit of CO2 to help it along?
@themaltmiller8438
@themaltmiller8438 10 ай бұрын
Not daft at all, yes it will build up naturally and carbonate naturally. You might need to top up for serving though, as you drink the beer the pressure I’ll reduce as the gas expands into the void

How do you check the gravity of the beer if its all sealed? Will there be enough pressure to use the tap to pour a sample off and use a hydrometer?
@themaltmiller8438
@themaltmiller8438 2 ай бұрын
Yep! As long as you leave a few PSI in the tank you will be able to get a sample out.

Did fermenting the festival under pressure inhibit the production of any desired esters?
@themaltmiller8438
@themaltmiller8438 8 ай бұрын
We didn't set the pressure high enough for that, just enough to keep the vessel slightly pressured, 5psi I think. It has ended up as the best tasting beer kit we've ever made!

So how does this setup fare in the winter months when say your house is cooler & you have no temperature control? Thanks
@themaltmiller8438
@themaltmiller8438 8 ай бұрын
There’s the option to add one of these www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product/fermentation-heating-wrap-belt-with-velcro-strap-30watts/ It’s ultra low watt density so will work fine on a plastic FV such as the chubby. You can then add a temperature controller such as an InkBird so that you can set a temperature you want the beer to sit at whilst fermenting

No, you can use the spending valve included in the kit we sell to add carbonation to the beer naturally, as a byproduct of the fermentation

Sorry I have another question.. isn't it bad to leave beer on the trub for a period of time? If you are serving from this the beer may sit on the trub for a month or two? (Depending on how quick you drink it of course! 😄).
@themaltmiller8438
@themaltmiller8438 2 ай бұрын
It depends, in general yes you may find that a prolonged contact time with the yeast could impact flavour but if it's kept cold and you're not leaving it for too long then this will be minimal. You can also transfer to a keg under pressure from this system easily if you wish to add on a grown with the system.
