A cover of Pretty Mary K by Elliott Smith, performed by Ethan Daum. This one is on the album Figure 8. I based this cover on a live performance of Elliott playing it on acoustic.
This one took a lot of practice! Someday I'll have to do a tutorial for this one :)

Ethan, you are brilliant as always!! Make all the Elliott's songs look simpler and playable while most of the music lover think untouchable. @@ethandaum Ethan, could you please do a small video/or even an explanation how Elliott plays the melody during the chord progression in Say Yes, after the intro? With just one guitar. The only tutorials I can find only cover the basic chords/rhythm, but they don't address how he plays that little riff whilst keeping the bass note and chord rhythm lol

Ethan, you’re awesome 👏!!! It’s really so great of you to learn his songs , play them beautifully, AND TEACH THEM so that more of us can try to play his beautiful music. Thanks Andrew! I'm a little hesitant to do the more produced songs - that one is so orchestral and band heavy. I just feel like I would miss the other parts... but maybe I'll do something for it someday

Amazing as always Ethan! Just like Elliott himself you're so under-appreciated for your brilliance. I just finished learning how to play Thirteen after watching your cover :). A few questions about learning to play by ear. 1) How did you get so good? 2) Do you consider it cheating to watch the guitarist's hands when you're trying to work stuff out or do you do this too? 3) How many takes does it usually take you to get these brilliant recordings?!

Thanks for those kind words, and nice job learning Thirteen! To answer your questions 1) Many years of playing/practice (about to hit 20 years of playing). 2) I definitely do not consider it cheating to watch the guitarist’s hands - it’s super helpful and I always try to find a video performance for that reason. 3) It depends on the song... for this one it took hours cause there are just so many opportunities to mess up! For easier ones it might only take a few tries.

Have you had much success with playing Southern Belle? It's so hard to play, I don't know how he managed to perform it live so many times with just one guitar (there are some bits that sound like at least 2 guitars in there). Would love to see you do a video on it!

I have been practicing that one! It's stupidly hard to play cleanly though... I feel like I'm utterly panicking the whole time, lol. Someday I'll get it though :)
