Sweet! Thanks for taking all the time to set up your video and demonstration! This is exactly what I need! I have a non-priming pump that draws water from a pond in our back yard (about 30 feet away and 5 feet below the pump) and have already installed the check valve (you called it a foot valve) that is at the intake in the pond. My goal initially was to have the check valve prevent water from flowing back into the pond thus holding my prime. Because it is pond water, the pipes and valves get pretty yucky (slime, pond debris) and the check valve eventually lets the water seep back into the pond - this is where I should say that the check valve installed in the pond is installed horizontally so no water column to apply pressure. When I do lose prime, I end up pulling the system apart and grabbing the hose to re-fill the pipes and creating a prime. I'm totally doing this so all I'll have to do is turn a couple of valves and turn on the hose!

Thats brilliant, just what I've been looking for, I've been trying to crack this nut for a couple of days I was a fair way towards completion however I thought I'll check out youtube (i didn't want to re-invent the wheel) you've shortened my development time considerably. Cool set up, nice demonstration, and good explanation. I'd like to build a backyard rain collector, and use a self priming pump to irrigate my lawn, which is about 4,000 SF grass lawn to 5,000 SF including trees and bushes. That means I need a minimum water storage capacity of 2,500 gallons in order to irrigate my lawn one time with 1" of water. 5,000 gallons is much more practical for 2 uses. 10,000 gallons would allow irrigation with no supplementing from the city water up to a month, if it were full. That seems a bit much for starting, so maybe I could build a 6,000 gallon pond, underground water storage tank, or even building something with cheap construction materials (i.e. cinder block with waterproofing membrane).

nice job and good explanation. Why not get rid of the manual valve and air valve? It seems to me that you just need to prime the pump to the output level of the pump. That is achieved with the checkvalve and waterinlet alone!
