Pristine 1979 Yamaha XS750 Triple walk-around and cold start, rev & idle

I am selling my pristine condition Yamaha XS750 triple motorcycle. It has just over 18,000 meticulously maintained miles and could almost pass as showroom stock new condition. It includes factory side saddle bags (not mounted), rear factory upper luggage compartment with back rest (not pictured), highway foot rests (not mounted), wind screen (not mounted and without brackets) and a bunch of genuine Yamaha parts from the original owner including a service manual and a few periodicals from when this bike was new. I had a set of rebuilt and tuned XS850 hitachi carburetors w/ pod filters and they are currently mounted and running on this bike. The sale will include the original wonderful condition Mikuni 750 carbs which have also been rebuilt recently.

Sorry to hear it is sold. I had bought a new one in April 1979, and kept it up until a few years ago. I am still regretting the day that I let it leave me, and am looking to replace it. If the new owner of yours is looking to pass it on I would be an interested buyer.

Hah, why do you not think it's a 79? It definitely is a 1979 XS750F with the original Mikuni Mk2 carbs (currently swapped for later 81 Hitachi's), redline was 9000 rpm (early models were 7500), viewing window for oil on right side case (76 and 77 didnt have that), and tubeless cast wheels... It's def a 79 :)

So, about the second gear. It IS fixable if you've someone with tiny hands or a really long set of needlenose pliers. The end of the countershaft is accessable (sort of) behind the transmission side cover. What you have to do is remove the stock circlip (which is probably bent, allowing the countershaft to move further than intended) and install TWO circlips to replace it. Button it back up, refill the oil, and you have second gear back again.

Is the brake light (white) on the dash supposed to illuminate with the brake light or illuminate when the brakes are not working? Somone cut all the wires to the gauges vs unplugging them (for the no gauge look) and I'm trying to get all to work again.

How does it run that well with pod filters? I've heard they're a nightmare to tune in. I want em for my 78 XS750SE

I threw pods on my 79, and didn't really need to do much retuning. It was a bear to start 'cold' but once warmed up, it ran solid and started easily.

Do these have high gears? My dad had a maxim 650 and it had slow gears. He said it could use 2 more.

+EragonSuperM They have 5 gears. It could use a 6th gear. But the three cylinders on these bikes have better torque than 4 cylinders.

I've just bought one but can't figure out why it is has fuel switches? Anyone?

TheHerbshirt The petcocks serve two functions. 1) to turn the fuel flow off so that the gas doesn't drip into the carburators when the bike is at rest. 2) there is a reserve position so when you "run out of gas" there is still enough gas to hopefully get you to a gas station when you switch the petcock to reserve.
