Here is my breakdown of a popular professional beach volleyball player.
Notice how he has minimal elbow drive and leads with his fingers through a big arc.

I was about to comment the same thing: this seems to be an off the net spike on a second touch. He's probably the best at hitting those balls and he's adapting his form to hit that ball coming from behind. Not driving with the elbow definitely lowers the power cuz you have less leverage, having said that the more moving parts in a system the harder it is to coordinate and more things can go wrong. So simplifying such spikes is a good strategy. However, if you're planning to smash that ball, the more hinges you have the more power you can produce. I don't really get why you're saying that hitting with an elbow drive forces you to hit at a lower point. Wallace (Brazil's opposite 5 years ago) comes to mind - he used to hit almost above his shoulder with an elbow drive. I'll check again some videos with him, but if my memory serves me right that's the way he used to spike. He seemed to have a strange technique compared to the other players who would hit in front of them. Interesting analysis nonetheless. I appreciate the fact that such case studies encourage dialogue with in the community. Keep up the good! works.

Thanks for the input! Im not saying that elbow drives ALWAYS results in a low contact point. Im just saying it does result in a low contact point for a lot of players who don't know how to stop their elbow drive before the impact zone. When the elbow gets ahead of the ball, the contact is always low because the arm is bent at impact. (This applies to most intermediate players who dont have good eye hand coordination in my experience) I agree with you that minimizing the moving parts helps reduce things that can go wrong and cause errors. That's why i try to minimize elbow and wrist movement for my students. I also agree that a whipping elbow can produce more hand speed at impact, BUT... with the court being smaller and jumps being lower, most players can hit the baller harder with this type of swing WHILE STILL KEEPING IT IN THE COURT on the sand. If you're way above the net then it doesnt really matter cuz your just crushing it straight down. I love the discussion tho! Thanks for raising some great points. 🤙🏽🤙🏽

@@menehunebvb I think it would be really useful to mention this context in the video. Having said that, I've watched closely more videos with Ahman and he always hits like that (including balls close to the net). So, I guess if you can produce enough force from you lower body it's enough to smash the ball even at the highest level without bothering with the elbow snap. What I was even more impressed by is Sorum's arm rectration and trajectory. He goes really high and has such a short arc. What makes it really tricky is that he can choose from there to either go for full force or simply roll the ball. It makes it really hard to read for the defenders.

@elias3026 yeah i agree that Ahman always hits like this. Seain Cook is the same. I will watch Sorum more. I think Arthur from Brazil is a great example of a low drawback too. He can transition to amazing shots from his hitting drawback so defenders have no idea what's coming. 👍🏼

I do think there is a way to reconcile these two tips that we hear frequently (one, hit the ball at the highest point, and two, hit the ball with your shoulder in front of you). Right before and into the moment of contact, the chest is slightly curved/angled back, so that when the shoulder/arm is 5-10 degrees in front of the plane of the body, it is actually at a maximum height. If you are jumping and do not have any curvature of the spine mid-jump, then it would be impossible to have your shoulder in front of you without hitting the ball at a sub-maximum height

Well... this looks like an off the net swing. Of course he'll have a higher contact point than a swing on the net where he's trying the bounce the ball in front of the defender. You can't cherry pick one swing and then say all other coaches are wrong.
@menehunebvb
@menehunebvb 14 күн бұрын
I agree with you. If you're hitting down then having the ball in front of you works great. My channel is geared towards undersized athletes who can't effectively hit the ball out in front without taping or hitting flat. So for them they need to know that hitting the ball above their shoulder is not wrong. Most of the people I coach hit the ball too far in front of them because most coaches tell them they need to.

@menehunebvb where's the love for the old fat old guys who are tallish but have a two credit card vert? Agreed though: a low contact point on a 5-0 set almost always equals top tape. Hitting from a few feet off with heavy top makes more sense for those of us who aren't contacting the ball at 10 feet on the sand. It's basic trig and physics.

Your videos are eye opening esp for a shorter player struggling in deep sand and barely clear the net, thanks coach. For clarification, this video seems to be a little different from your Max overspin video where your instruction emphsaize a high slute glancing the equator/outside of ball ?
@menehunebvb
@menehunebvb 14 күн бұрын
Yes. The contact is very solid, but the "thought" is that your hand is wrapping over the ball as you contact it. Hope this makes sense. It's not easy to explain haha

@@menehunebvb Coach 1) when i'm back out in Cali i will def hit you up for lessons. 2) I've started trying to incorporate your teachings/videos the past couple days on sand things are looking better! 3) couple clarification questions - when using circular motion on spiking & condensing the circular motion due to limited height/jump @5'9 , when using circular my arm can clear the net to forearm level. ->So if my hang time in sand is short this circular motion of drawing back and then going forward seems to be too long and i'll miss my apex. I assume i need to condense my draw back circular motion. Therefore, is the solution of condensing my spike motion the golden arm position referenced in your other video ? (where my right hitting arm hand is by ear and less draw back). ->Lastly where is the power being initiated from to prevent shoulder injury, as your golden arm video references motion and hand by/behind the ear. Seems like a lot of stress on shoulder. mentally and physically where should i be leading the power of my circular motion? hand?hip/torso? I've already seen improvements on the deep sand yesterday I am stoked from your teachings. The emphasis on wrapping the ball has finally clicked from your videos. I am beyond stoked with this breakthrough.

@@bigbadwanger glad to hear my videos are helping you! for a lower vertical jump, you have to make a smaller circle where you don't pull your elbow back and down as much... OR you can learn to jump with your elbow back and down before you leave the ground. I will try to explain this in a future video. the power comes from the legs and the trap muscles. since the power is focused UPWARD, it's like doing a shoulder press movement or shot put. since there is no intense rotation of the shoulder joint, it should be less stressful on your shoulder. hopefully this makes sense!

This is great work, yet, and I mean it as constructive feedback; It would be usefull to have a bigger sample size than just one swing. You could then show the result of the different swings to approve why this swing is so perfect. Amazing job anyways!

this is a bow and arrow arm swing, i’ve yet to see anyone to have a circular armswing on the beach, it’s usually bow and arrow or high draw. the circular armswing is based on where the draw begins, if it were circular his arm would be pulled back downwards before leading with his elbow up.
@menehunebvb
@menehunebvb 6 күн бұрын
This is a modified circular (smaller circle). With bow & arrow the palm points out to the side. David's palm never points out right as he draws back. Taylor Crabb does low bow & arrow.

I don’t agree with the notion of: „don’t hit the ball in front of you“. I am undersized as well and can tell you from my experience in and outdoor with various coaches and team mates. If you don’t have the ball in front of you, you can’t see the anything in front of you, so you don’t see where the block is, and (more advanced) where the Defence is. The extra inch or 3 cm that you get by hitting the ball on top of your head don’t matter if you make bad choices because you are attacking blind
@menehunebvb
@menehunebvb 13 күн бұрын
If that works for you then by all means keep doing it. 👍🏼👍🏼 if you listen to my comment i just say you dont HAVE TO hit the ball in front of you. On the sand, most players that come to me hit the ball too far in front because they have been told this their whole life... and this causes a lot of problems. And if they cant hit the ball solid or over the net or keep it in the court, then vision doesnt matter either. It is also possible to improve vision by running low sets. This is just my opinion... if you dont agree, keep doing what you are doing. 🤙🏽🤙🏽 Btw... how high are you above the net on the sand?

@@menehunebvb What about shoulder pain? When you attack the ball in front of you, you reduce the chance of a shoulder injury. When you play with a high ball, you don't have a large field of vision. Many players rely on feeling. They only see the athlete before the jump (exception Sorum). Of course we are talking about beach volleyball.
@menehunebvb

@Zidek18 research shows that circular arm swings cause less shoulder issues than a bow & arrow arm swing. But everyone is different. If you like hiiting the ball out in front and it works for you then by all means keep doing it. Im saying it doesnt make as much sense for undersized players who need to hit the ball up with a lot of over spin.
