Found out that I live 15 minutes from the Johnny Nerd-Out shop, so I called them up, talked to Shane, drove over and bought a BBSHD kit with a battery and accessories. Johnny and Shane are incredibly nice and helpful guys who are very knowledgeable of the products that they sell and the e-bike industry. Don't buy anywhere else. These guys deserve your business and you won't be sorry. Thanks Johnny and Shane for being so accommodating and helping me find parts to fit my bike.

I would go with a hub motor for single speed and mid drive for multi speed bikes. Higher performance 72V rear hub motor upfront with good torque arms on both sides.

Could you do a video talking about the risks of drilling the frame to run cables internally? I am looking to buy a bike to convert and lots of bikes already run brake/gear cables internally. It is really tempting to just drill or expand the existing holes there to hide most of the extra cables. You could then fill the hole up with some hardening putty or something

Question: I’ve got a single speed Gravity gravel/road bike. Big 46t ring up front and small ring in the back for faster flat road riding in Florida. I’m considering adding a Bafang MidDrive motor. I figure I would pedal with the motor off when starting (to save it from straining on the big single speed gearing) and then once I’m up to speed a bit, turn the motor on and use it to maintain high speeds and maybe even use a thumb throttle. Does that sound like an OK setup or is the hub drive what I should be going with? Or is either one just not a good idea with that type of gearing? I’m weighing the cost/advantages/disadvantages between converting my gravel bike or buying a Gravity Ebike in the 28mph top speed class. Thanks for any info!

Sir, do you have any experience matching a mid drive motor to electric gearing on an mtb? Can it be done?

I got an idea about a system that could work . Carbon belt drive for pedaling single speed with ability to change belt sizes due to dh frame. Then mid drive with chain single speed but havto rejoin chain and changout to steel freehub with spank hex E type. Hub. Should take 5 minute on the trail to change between the two.

Add "less unsprung mass" to the middrive pros. Once getting to 3kw+ motors that amount of weight is a big deal with where it is on the frame.

I was wondering how a mid drive would work on a single speed. I have a single speed cruiser with a rear fork to narrow to fit a hub drive, and was thinking about putting a mid drive on it.

I think the 2 biggest pro of mid drive more people need to realize. 1!!! in like 95% of cases mid drives are waaaay lighter meaning for most systems your getting higher speed because the bike is lighter, you obviously are also getting those gear benefits. 2!!! And omg can I not stress this enough if you are still riding regular size bike tires aka anything under the common 4.0 width then changing tires is going to be common since honestly bike tires no matter how we wanna slice it are fragile it’s just that simple and changing a tire on hub motor bikes is always a huge pain for so many reasons. You’ve gotta disconnect connectors which on some bikes is a pain due to very strong connections, you gotta lug around a heavy ass wheel to change the tire, and because hub motors always have very long axles you can’t lay them flat on table or even leaning them on flat surfaces gets sketchy because of how heavy the motor is meaning it easily damages standard tables and such. Some extra quite small reasons: On other really huge benefit people don’t talk about enough but I consider this a personal preference so it’s not a 100% pro for all. But dude the handling on mid drive bikes I’ve found to be so much better, overall having all the power and weight centralized makes things like carving corners way easier, maneuvering the bike around manually is extremely easy because it light too so storage is also easier to handle. Also something I’ve very rarely seen on hub motors is a push mode, among the “low power” situations bafangs products and cyc both have a built in push mode to help with walking the bike up things like hills or such which on builds I’ve had that were a bit extra heavy is a very nice touch that I really wish more hub motor e-bikes and kits would start including.

I want an ebike but feel it's too little for too much money......I had to go with a $200 motorized bicycle engine kit build. 40mph top speed, 80 mpgs, 40 mile range on 1/2 gallon tank of gas. I can ride in 95F or 20F all day without worry of damage to a $500 battery pack. I can leave bike parked in 95F direct sunlight all day or outside all winter in 10F without risk of battery 🔋 or electronic damage. I have nothing against ebikes but seems the 2 & 4 stroke kits offer way more bang for the buck if properly cared for. Wish I still have had a workshop so I could weld together a steel full suspension motorized bicycle frame.

@@michaelbrinks8089 the thing with motorized bikes is, in some states they are now highly illegal, they often look messy no matter what you do, they are quite loud which for people with sensitive ears like me is a huge problem(that’s why when I move to the motorcycle market even then I’ll have to go electric, it’s also just not as accessible for people who aren’t handy enough to understand gas engines especially since the 3 times I made the gas motor bike all the engines came not all the way out together and such. There is also the issue of heat, and mounting light systems since it’s illegal to ride even a regular bicycle with no lights. I see the benefits of both but I think for a regular everyday person, who’s maybe has light pockets but time to wait, going to alibaba and ordering a $200 motor kit then getting a $300 48v battery will suffice for most people.

E-bike has the convenience of recharging at home and almost anywhere with an outlet. The motorized kit requires keeping a gas supply to refill. Personally I'd avoid riding almost any bike in bad weather unless an emergency. Just not a pleasant experience. I'd agree these still overpriced, but they are just more convenient than my motorcycle.

Dude, question !! Can you install a mid drive on a fixie bicycle ?? Am curious what happens when you brake with your legs, can the motor and gearing take that reverse torque. Can you pedal backwards with the mid drive installed ?? Or is this just not possible, and a mid drive will only work with a normal rachetted single gear . Please help
@JohnnyNerdOut2 ай бұрын
You would need a tongsheng with coaster brake compatibility. All other mid drives have a freewheeling crank.

What would be a good all around gear ratio if going SS? Best motor ? BBSHD or BBS02?

Bbshd for most people. Ratio depends on how you would be riding it. All off road? All top speed commuting? Different ratios for each application

They technically don't have a retail space. It's just a shop/small warehouse with pallets of inventory and space to work on bikes, but they were very accommodating and invited me to bring my bike over to see how big of a battery would fit in the frame. Just give them a call to see if you can drop by. It'll be either Johnny or Shane.

Saw video from another builder that single speed conversion is no good if your drop outs drop straight down. Is that opinion or fact? If opinion, and you have a different opinion, please chime in with your opinion so I can open a bit of discussion so I can possible form an intelligent decision. I'm about to start my first build and contemplating removing the rear derailleur but leaving the cassette on the same cog....... but would rather convert to single for the cleaner look and removing useless crap from the bars. I live in Fla on all flat terrain. I ride big chain ring and smallest cog consistently, No off road riding except maybe crossing a grassy field and riding oyster shell paths. An average ride will have me negotiate side streets, beach roads, busier main roads, rail road crossings, and one or more decent sized draw bridges. So, what says JNO watchers? Can I convert to single speed rear, mid drive with vertical drop outs?
@DarthTinderalla-qm9zw9 ай бұрын
If you can find the perfect gear ratio it works. You can't pull the wheel farther back to tighten the chain as it starts wearing.
@DarthTinderalla-qm9zw9 ай бұрын
There are chain tensioners but your gear selection is still pretty limited

Trying to streamline. Unfortunately, I’m still running with the rear derailleur attached to nothing. It works but is unsightly.
@maxring83711 ай бұрын
Single speed makes a lot of sense for the longevity of a mid drive drive train. Derailleur systems and hub gears are not designed for the constant high power delivered by a mid drive.
@Puccini00011 ай бұрын
what about different gear systems compatibility in mid motors. Normally if you take an 8 speed and 10 speed system it will be completly incompatibile, different chain, different chainwheels. but somehow i cannot find information, you can buy bafang chainset, but for what type of chain it is? 7 speed or 12?
@JohnnyNerdOut11 ай бұрын
That is dependent on the cassette in the back. A 9 speed cassette requires a 9 speed chain and so on.
