I live in Florida and just got hired as a probation officer. The hiring process consisted of a physical exam, drug test, criminal background check and loads of paper work haha. That's a bout it. I never had to take a polygraph test though. Hope this helps anyone who has questions! Good luck! :)

I’ve watched a couple of your videos and love how informative they all are! Thank you for sharing! I just now realized that PO is what I want to do. I graduated with a sociology degree 3 yrs ago. I recently stopped smoking weed to pursue the job I’ve always wanted. (Took me a while to realize it was PO haha I knew exactly what I wanted to do but didn’t know that it is what a PO does). My question is, how long do I have to stay clean for to begin applying? I’ve heard it is 2 years for the police academy, is it the same for PO?

I did a 4 month police academy then a 2 month advance academy. We do defensive tactics , we qualify for shooting, we also do a EVOC driving vehicle course. Nevada we have gang units and we deal with some dangerous people so we are actual officers and social service worker's our jobs are the same but very different. We go to court we transport offenders we do police stings and operations so we do social service and law enforcement equally. We do Mac Tac training all of it so if you wanna be a PO on the west coast you should also want to be a post one officer because they are one in the same for us. Active shooters we are trained to respond so POs are so diverse everywhere it's just we arrest and transport and everything else. We handle our own people.

Hello Favorite P.O. I just retired a month ago. I was a Senior PO for over 32 years. You are so right. The job is very stressful. I went home many days just wanting to sleep. Another great point you make is that you MUST be able to MULTITASK to do this job. It's imperative that are able to MULTITASK.

Polygraph tests are tough. They are stressful. I was having like a mini panic attack because your just sitting in a small room and they said i failed it the first time because I was moving to much. Im like how am I moving. Im literally just sitting here you cant even move your hands or finger for like 30-60 minutes. It was terrible lol.

Passed my written test, and waited awhile due to COVID, now I finally have my interview Thursday, I have a minor DUI on record from 4 years ago, I’ve talked to a recruiter about it in other departments as well and they look at recency, type, the situation, YOU ARE ONLY disqualified if you have a felony other crimes might be disqualifying as well but it’s a case by case

Some advice from a retired P.O. Get hired as a corrections counselor in juvenile hall as it is easier to obtain this position. In my department many promoted from Juvenile hall and it is some of the best work experience you can get. You will also want at least an associates degree in criminal justice or related field. A bachelor’s degree would be even better but not always necessary if you have other related experience such as juvenile hall. Once you get at least a year of experience in juvenile hall feel free to apply to become a Deputy Probation Officer. Consider being a juvenile probation officer as it can be very rewarding helping young people get their lives back on track. Probation officers wear many hats and can be rewarding and interesting work. There is a lot of report writing that is submitted to the court so be sure to have your writing skills up to par, strong English writing skills is one of the most important skills you can have. Let me add that doing an internship with the probation department while in college is a great way to get your foot in the door. I did this and the department was impressed enough with my work that I was invited to apply when I graduated with my B.A. in Criminal Justice and was successful at being hired.

Any state that requires probation officers to also be peace officers.. they will be required to pass a physical exam as well!

I'm from Cali, I applied a year ago and I got turned down because of the questionnaire. I told the truth about smoking marijuana in the past several years. The reason I told the truth was because I was told to be truthful no matter how bad the situation is/was. BTW, I applied many years ago before applying last year and I remember taking a written test, that's why I remember people telling me to be honest, because the same question will come back again in a different way to see if you were telling the truth. I was way young back then and didn't take it seriously I guess. So, the other day I received two emails from them stating that I was eligible to apply due to recent revisions to their pre- investigative supplemental questionnaire. So this has gotten me interested all over again and I think I will fill out an application again. Maybe this is God's work. Thanks for your videos.

I’m from Colorado and was an Adult Parole Officer for over 21 years. Parole requires POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training). Probation is not armed and calls the Police to arrest violators. We made our own arrests and yes it can be very dangerous. Once the client knows he’s going to jail the fight is usually on. Then if you throw drugs in the mix aka the client is high, it took several POs and Cops to handle the arrest safely.

I live in Los Angeles, CA. The job I actually applied for is in LA County as group supervisor at a juvenile facility. It’s referred to as “Group Supervisor, Nights, Probation.” It has been 1 year since the day I applied & I am approaching the third step in the interview process. The process down South is much more simple.

I'm currently applying for juvenile probation training officer. The majority of defendants will come from a broken home, addiction, and gangs. I have experienced all of those growing up. How can I use that to my advantage during the interview? Since I have no college education I'm concerned that will be a disadvantage for me.

As a PO in Virginia, criminal record checks are not unison across the board. Case by case consideration on charge and disposition. So if you do have some skeletons in the closet, go for the job and let them tell you No instead of automatically pulling yourself out of the running.

Im in Dallas Texas and grew up in the streets like most young black men. It's really discouraging to know that my juvenile and arrest record could negatively affect me when juvenile probation has been a dream of mine since I was 16. Racist police have been harassing me and putting bogus charges on me for years. The knowledge of the law I learned in college is the only thing that has kept me from being a felon now. It's just unfortunate that nobody cares about racism or growth, if you got a dot on your record, it's over. Nobody understands the youth like those of us from the streets so Its unfortunate the state doesn't see it like that. I gotta interview at a juvenile facility this week and I'm beyond nervous.

Don’t apply with l a county probation. Mgmt is making the field dpo’s work out of class in the juvenile halls. Over half of the dpo’s have lift due to this issue. The chief recently moved a dozen bureau chiefs frm their jobs. I worked for this department over thirty years and it had never been this bad.

So if you have a juvenile record that has been ex-sponged you still cant be JPO?

I think it can be dangerous if you are out on the field and visiting peoples homes. But not every state requires that and not every probation officer will be out in the field.
