Project Fast Fish: 318 Stroker Build - Part 3
Season 1: Episode 5
Parts and links are provided below.
Project Fast Fish is based on the restoration and modification of a Plymouth Barracuda.
This video features a walk-through of a 318 to 349 stroker build and represents Part 3 of 3. We look at completing the engine assembly to fire it up for the first time.
We had a spare 318 engine that was once housed in the ‘73 Barracuda. After completing the rotating assembly, we install the heads, lifters, push-rods, timing chain and gears, timing cover, engine oiling system, intake, water pump, fuel pump, and valve covers. Then, we place it on our engine test stand to fire it up for the first time.
A 318 with .030 over and a 3.58” stroke from the 360 crank equals 349 ci.
Our goal is to sell this engine and use the proceeds to help build Project Fast Fish.

An Edelbrock Performer Air Gap would be my choice. It’s not about having a fancier intake, or bragging rights, it’s about making power. The air gap design allows the manifold to run cooler, which will make more Horsepower throughout the RPM range. Of course I live in Arizona, and heat is a major issue here. Back east you might want a manifold that runs hotter for the winter months. That’s not a big problem for us.

Thanks. There's a lot of love out there for Small Block LA. We went with the Performer RPM on the 390. On the 349, we went with what we had since it's going to used as a fundraiser for Project Fast Fish. Thanks for watching. 👍

@@MicsMotorworx there's an ongoing debate--UTG's video channel found his slant 6 needed more heat in the intake, and of course Smokey Yunick had his hot air engine design making 1.8 hp per cubic inch. the goal of cool intakes is to create a density in the air charge, and a good ram air setup will do that. Heat can cause fuel percolation, but a cool can or using an electric fuel pump and a return fuel system over a mechanical one soaking up heat from the block can do that.
@MicsMotorworx

Neat. I love UTG and his videos. I, for one, should never debate the finer points of chemical reactions, mathmatical engineering, nor rate of changes in density during quench and compression 😆 The reason we had this on the 349 was because it was the best match for the combination of parts. An RPM Performer was better suited for our 390 build. We had great dyno umbers with the 390 and RPM Performer. I'm quite positive we wouldn't have seen those results with the regular Performer that was used on the 349. Thanks for watching.

Did you figure for thermo expansion? as the engine heats up, the crank and pistons will swell/grow... Id have sent the whole kit back and let the manufacture sort out the problem, now the manufacture can void any responsibility

Thanks for the input. We used that intake as it's what we had in the shelf. We went with a Performer RPM on the 390 we built for Project Fast Fish. We figured the future buyer of the 349 might change things around as they saw fit. Thanks for watching. 👍

Torque sequence on the head should be more like 50, that's 75, then 95 or something or like that. It would be more critical if you will lose using aluminum heads. But you always do heads in a sequence of three steps. And if you have torque to yield you do three steps and then the torque to yield. The intake ports, but the exhaust ports were left Raw. At least it looks that way.

A lot of good information out there for these builds. Thanks for the feedback and information for those browsing the comments. We based the final torque number based on information from reliable sources for these heads. However, we opted for the first torque number in our 2 step sequence. Nothing wrong with three step sequence, either. Thanks for watching 👍

You can have the best break in oil made and still wipe a lobe .. or two ,the main thing with flat tappet cams these days is it is absolutely imperative that the face of the lifters be checked to make sure they are convex on the face and with the cam installed and before the intake goes on turn the engine over and make sure ALL the lifters spin in their bores ,it doesn't matter who ya got the lifters from either

Gasket OR rtv! Never both except at joints!
@MicsMotorworx
@MicsMotorworx Жыл бұрын
Hi Joe. Thanks for the comment. Were you referring to the timing cover or the little daps of rtv on the joints for the intake? For the timing cover, we've had a few leaks in the past. This is despite double checking torque and tightening sequence. Many disagree with Pop for doing this, but his way doesn't leak. For the intake, it is acceptable to use the little dollops of rtv on the gaskets for the joints as shown. Again, leak prevention. We also chose the cork gasket per instruction from Edelbrock. If a higher performing intake is used, such as one of the RPM series; then only RTV is recommended.

Hey Mike. The channel and builds are more of a hobby for us. Pop and Jon work a small mechanic shop in Northern Florida for their regular gigs. When we first started the channel, they wanted to make it clear the builds and projects weren't going to become additional jobs. Myself, I teach a business class at a local middle school. I'll check with them and get their thoughts.

I appreciate being original but it seems it would make more sense to build a 360 or take a 360 , bore .040, use 318 crank, and use either 318 heads or 360 heads with flat top or dome pistons. I totally get why you did this but the same question was in my mind as well. Cool build

Thanks for watching and the ideas. It was all about the parts available around the garage.
