Part 2 of trying to save badly damaged fender. Some serious concerns if I made 1000€ worth of scrap metal.

Awesome! Thank you for your comment and views. This is my video diary of trying to learn how to restore 50 years old small European sports car. My original intention was to just fix some holes and have it done. But it was quite obvious at very early stage, that this car needs a full overhaul. And since I have never done this before, I decided to set up a KZfaq account to document this..So thanks for finding it and enjoying it... Stay tuned for future episodes.

Interesting that we can see the panel "moving" due to heating and cooling during welding from minute 9:36 on. This shows Physics at work beautifully. Great work on the GT. I am having a Bitter SC to do ahead of me and there the curves are fortunately not as complicated as what you are dealing with. I'll keep watching for inspiration!

Hi and glad you liked the video. Honestly I had to google and study the Bitter SC, and it seems interesting and weird concept car...Never seen one in North Europe tho...

@@GT1900garage Hi! Everything on the Bitter other than the visible body panels is Opel Senator A. Even the seat frames but the upholstery is Maserati style. If you look at the engine bay there is no difference to a Senator/Monza. Erich Bitter's company only made about 460 coupes, 5 4-doors and convertibles in the low 20s. Fun cars though. The bullet proof reliability of the Opel and a fancy body which is exactly what Erich Bitter had in mind.

In my experience you don't need to cool the welds with air. You need to have constant heat. With heating and too much cooling can have the opposite effect of what you want. If you havent seen i recomend retropowercars channel here on youtube. Some of their videos can help you out. After saying that I think you did a great job. It could be much worse after so many and so long weld seams.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, there are as many instructions and NOT TO DO's as there are experts. Some work better with thick sheet metal (US cars) and some with thinner plates. I think I survived, with only one unexpected heat warp...
@dz9xzl
@dz9xzl Жыл бұрын
Reduce the heat in welding process to avoid waves. 1mm welding gap is to much, use cold air for cooling each welding spot,..etc... Yes, this required more time, but it will reduce the rework time alot.
@GT1900garage
@GT1900garage Жыл бұрын
Yes, did that as thoroughly as I could. Every three spots, small hammer tap and cooling by air and water rag. It took few hours to complete 70cm of weld. This part I did not film due to complexity of the procedure :) And this panel is curving in four direction, I believe that it is impossible to get it done without ANY warping. And finally there was only one bigger heat warped bump in the fender, so as a first timer, I think I survived pretty well.. 1 mm gap was recommended by old timers..

That is not the original "Opel GT" fender logo. That one is from a Toyota or whatnot. It is glued, where the original sit in plastic bushings with metal pins at the rear. There should be one on the glovebox - similar to that but in 3 separate parts is the genuine fender logo. However: the GT-J hasn't got that anyway ...
@GT1900garage
@GT1900garage 10 ай бұрын
Yes, at that time I did not notice that. Someone else also pointed it out to me also. And yes, as a GT/J does not have that , well , I am struggling about the finalized look of the car...I think I have decided the paint scheme but not quite sure shall I keep the original J look or going for chrome or mixing something...

YES, I was not aware of that until I recently bought a original brochure from 1970 and saw that there was a HUGE antenna sticking up from the beautiful fender.......

@@GT1900garage The original Hirschmann or Bosch motor-driven Antennas only leave a small visible dimple when retracted. My friends' silver one had exactly that. Better than installing a "shark fluke" (or its predecessors) on the roof. If you are very keen you could use the rear window defogger wires with a piece from the 1990s BMW 5-series. They had it as standard.

Absolutely stunning: I find it hard to believe that you have achieved such standards on only your second restoration. If I may ask, you seem to have access to some very professional fabrication equipment at 'the doctor's' - is it a professional workshop owned by a friend ? Best wishes.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, this is my second restoration, I did my Mini ten years ago...honestly especially my welding skills really need some improvement....some wise man once said, "if you need to grind to make it look good, you are not a welder, you are a grinder". I'm a grinder. Yes, I do have occasionally access to better tools..I was lucky to get introduced to this local hot rod builder, an old-timer, whose knowledge is something that I truly value.

This car is gonna end up being a Bondo buggy from front to back. You seem to have great equipment ...why don't you just make a new fender? And once you've made one, you can make others. Put the effort into the metal instead of the body filler.
@GT1900garage
@GT1900garage Жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, thanks a lot for the comment. Yes, there will be some body filler needed, that's for sure. But to be honest, if I could make GT panels without need to use any bondo, I would be retiring my day job and selling panels around the world. Thing is, this car had a bunch of hasty repairs, and covered with lots of bondo. I hope to turn it to full metal fixes with full welds, with some body filler to make is look smooth. And hopefully only thin layers of it. Could you send me the link for the work you have done. I assume that you have long experience and would be interested to see project pictures of your work..

@@GT1900garage I sold my GT many years ago...and unfortunately the pictures I had, got lost. I'm a retired body man now, because of eye cancer...so make sure you wear the appropriate shade of eye protection when you weld! I think if you were smart enough to make a wooden template for curvature, you could make a station buck for front fenders or any panel for that matter...but...you for sure will need a good quality English wheel , especially for the double crowns on a body like the Opel.
