You're a fantastic automobile restoration craftsman! My only suggestion would have been . . . as long as you were extensively disassembling this vehicle, perhaps you could have modified its dimensions in order to fit a larger, more powerful engine.
@GT1900garage
@GT1900garage 9 ай бұрын
Appreciated your opinion and praises. I know that there is a trend for modifying GT to carry a small V8 (I assume you mean V8?) and I even would have access to small Rover V8, but thing is that - I personally feel that spirit of this small European sports car is to have small, yet somewhat spiced up original engine. Most likely I will store the original engine (for sole purpose of having option to go back to matching numbers) and have bit more modern 2l spiced up Opel engine in. You could easily have 20-30% power upgrade with this option, and for me that is more than enough...I am type of sports car owner that I rather cruise along curvy country roads, than do burnouts 😂

The rear end floor along with the axle tunnel, fixings for the stabilizers and axle rods and - inside - the "rear bench rail" (which is not really used on the GT) was the only true Opel part taken from the Kadett Olympia LS 1700. These parts came prefabricated and waxed to the french "carossier" and were used along with the more unique front floor part, which is cobbled together from homemade and Opel parts. All above the floor line is genuine Brissenaux & Lotz and is only loosely related to Opel. The windows winding mechanism is an Opel part as far a I recall as well as the door locks ... but that was it mainly. The tinwork is french. Even the electric system with the four colored plugs under the dashboard is a GT-only developement.

Oh I love these comments, thanks for the info. I am definitely not a Opel expert, This is my first Opel and next project most likely something totally different. Si I am not a "die-hard" Opel fan...All info is pretty much new info to me. I heard that there is a good book about the history of GT and the french origin of the car...I think that I need to buy that book.

@@GT1900garage I was 9 years old, when the GT appeared on the german market. A neighbor working for Opel came home with it one evening. I guess *all* the boys between 4 and 104 came around to see that thing. It was a red A-L 1900. There were only about 3.500 of them that came with the 60hp 1100SR double carburator engine - the most had the 1900S engine with the 32 DIDTA Solex carb. The engine was *almost* stock Opel Record C - apart from the alu valve cover, the air filter, the oilpan and the oil pickup, which is located at the rear due to the different mounting position. In the 80s a friend of mine (car mechanic) and I bought them "by pound" and restored them. Roland and his wife owned a silver one in near mint original condition with the 1st generation steel wheels and tiny hubcaps - and 165/70-HR13 tires. Several times a contest winner on various Opel meetings. That car - unfortunately - was totally destroyed in an accident with a tractor in the early 1990.

It all depends on the fact that how much ignorant abuse the car has gone through. Rust is everywhere if one gives it opportunity. This GT was badly repaired, and GT is notorious with all the hidden compartments for rust to make its magic.

It's a 1600lbs car, not much power needed, and actually the 1.9L is American designed, 90hp. Bump that up to 120-130 with an angry cam and a couple DCOE Weber's = More than enough for a 1600lbs car on Scandinavian roads. It's also important to keep it matching numbers, seen prices on rare cars these days? They've skyrocketed.
