Some parents in India practice the Devadasi tradition, selling their daughters into a life of prostitution, often around the age of 10.

We traveled to the Indian city of Sangli to meet a group of bolshy sex workers selling their bodies in the name of the Hindu Goddess Yellamma. Local sex worker Anitha invites us for lunch in her brothel; shows us her homemade "sex rooms," and tells us what it's like to be a religious prostitute in modern India.
Afterwards we cross the border into Karnataka into the heartlands of the ancient Devadasi tradition to uncover the mystery of the Goddess Yellamma, and find out how a religious icon became a justification for child prostitution. We meet two teenage Devadasis, Mala and Belavva, to talk sex, saris, and how they cope with the deadly threat of HIV.
A dancing transvestite Devadasi steals the limelight in the next phase of our journey, as we travel deeper into the murky world of temple prostitution. He invites us for chai, gives our host a manicure, and teaches us a few tricks of the trade. We explore the home of the most celebrated Devadasi brothel madam in the business to find out how she lures the next generation of girls into the sex trade.
For the grand finale we went to the annual full moon festival in Saundatti, the most prestigious event in the Devadasi calendar. The colour, dancing and celebrations of the festival disguise the darkness of its underlying purpose: child sex trafficking. Here traffickers, pimps and brothel madams come from all over India to recruit young girls and boys into the sex trade in the name of the Goddess Yellamma. On our way home, we are invited to a remote mud hut to meet two older Devadasi women a mother and daughter who reflect back on their lives and ask the question: what kind of religion turns parents into pimps and their children into prostitutes?

I will never understand how prostitutes can be derided as filthy, but the men who pay for their services are somehow cleaner. A blatant injustice.

Imagine someone that sees hundreds of men in month(3 men per day) might be more, at most these men are seeing these women a few times a month. It’s not the same, and so it can be deduced why one would be considered dirtier than the other, but I ain’t never seen a dude who pays for prostitution considered clean. Most people will stay away from both with fear of catching stds….so stfu.

The last interview with the Devadasi grandmother and mother with a deceased daughter due to HIV was particularly heartbreaking to me. The older they got, the more disillusioned they became to the injustices of their social strata. Earlier in the doc, the young Devadasi girl copes with societal disgust by perceiving herself as a god who provides for her family. The goddess Yellamma is essentially a scapegoating for men to do as they will, and a coping mechanism for women to accept their fate under the guise of religion and duty.

The weird thing about the caste system is that Western educated Indians still buy into it- I went to medical school at Dartmouth and one of my fellow classmates was from the Brahmin caste (and she was born and raised in the US) and she looked down on another female classmate who was a Muslim Indian (an "untouchable"). Legit took place in New Hampshire in 2006 with all American or Canadian people of Indian descent. If they buy into it, what hope is there for these devadasi?
@Nexus-7.0
@Nexus-7.0 Жыл бұрын
Oh yes absolutely they do. Hindus are the only people and religion on this planet who officially still practice Untouchability. Temple prostitution is part of their Hindu religion as well where the Hindu scriptures prescribe young girls to prostitute themselves in the temples to satisfy the sexual desires of Brahmin men.

The documentary overall was quite informative but the narrative in the beginning is a bit off. It was during the colonial era that the Devdasi were compared to prostitutes by the British which was a political move to show the "savageness" of Indian culture. This was despite the fact that it was the British officials who maintained most of the brothels in India. They were forced to register themselves as prostitutes because that is what the British Government classified them to be. You can read about it more on wikipedia....

@@onlyhuman5544 well u should really check facts. Becoz that’s just how it is. Initially devdasi women were free and liberated. They were women rich in arts like dancing and music and many upper caste women also took pride in being chosen as devdasies, in fact these women were never questioned about their sexual relationships with men too. But when the British came in, they could not fathom a society different then theirs and as this person stated devdasi were forced to register themselves as prostitutes.

A lot of Indians say, India is developing, progressing etc But I'm from a village and I say, it is very slow. Development is only in the cities and since internet is cheap, people can access information, we think that we are progressing. But frankly, India in 2020 is 80% similar to India in 1980. And especially the chutiya caste system, it takes multiple centuries to abolish. Some of my friends in cities also sometimes ask which caste the other is from. The worst people here.

"it's my responsibility to put those children to school", but you're still young too. It is so heartbreaking to see how lots of youths already carry lots of responsibilities instead of running outside, going to school and just enjoy their youth. I remember when I was still studying, I reported smth similar to this and it was really heartbreaking especially when I talked to some of them.

Don't get me wrong, I love VICE and their documentaries, but the person making this documentary did an especially poor job of narrating her research. She mocked many of the Hindu stories, saying that they made no sense and even went so far as to call the people in the videos fat. Her job as a reporter and journalist is to inform us, not to give personal opinions. Very disappointed with the way that she depicted Hinduism and they ladies of this video.
@raincoathaveli

I am so glad you wrote this because it's exactly how I feel. The "reporter" was very bias and depicted Hinduism and India in a very mocking/negative manner. She failed to do any in-depth research on the topics she covered, and at times she was offensive in the things she said. If people want a better look at Devadasi's watch Pan Nalins film.

Never ceases to amaze me how "Westerners" go to another country and are so disturbed by these traditions and societal norms. Take a look at Canada and the US, how many teens and kids start turning tricks because their parents disowned them, they need something to eat, they're institutionalized, they're trying to escape an abusive situation, they need a hoot to keep them warm during winter, they grew up sexually abused, they've been trafficked and groomed at a young age, the list goes on and on. Our own people accept this and those in leadership just chalk it up to the addicted and homeless population. We marginalize these people the same way those in the shops won't make eye contact with them. These women do what they need to do to survive and in this day and age we need to accept that prostitution has been around as long as we have and laughing at it and expressing disgust doesn't get these young women and girls out of these situations.

this comment right here. Her constant need to express her clear disdain for their culture was giving colonizer. Seeing how she looked at their customs as bizarre, instead of learning about them with neutral, empathetic eyes. This tells me that she, and the producers I'm sure do not see the correlation across cultures, as you've stated. If anything the purpose of this documentary was to attack a deeply engrained custom, which was just shone to have transformed meaning throughout periods, v. shining a light on the damage of child prostitution and sexual endangerment all together.

I dont know how these people portray the worst part of the country and it shocks me that these things even exist today in India I was born and brought up in India and even in the most rural and poor areas i have been to, in (North) India i have never seen such conditions and i mentioned north India bcz south Indians are even considered to be more wealthy than north Indians and also how u portray the story of Goddess yellamma in the most disrespectful way , manipulating the words according the choice to make it look derogatory and totally imaginative that shows the standards of u guys

This is really bad reporting.Casually disrespecting a religion(calling the deities fat,blue and bikini wearing) defeats the purpose of the video.(if the purpose is something more noble, than just getting rich and popular.)Its the equivalent of calling Jesus an anemic, dirty robed warmongerer in the middle of a documentary showing the rape of boys in catholic churches.Even though it is true in your sense,it antagonises an entire population that really have to give a fuck about the issue.

I’m really grateful to them for making documentaries on such topics that are still considered as a taboo.

The guy was someone on site who happened to speak a few words of English so the journalist dubbed him a "translator". They probably didn't even the decency to pay him for what hes been labelled, instead they've mocked him. This entire documentary is full of biased terminology and purposely inaccurate reporting to give it a negative, backward image. Utter joke.
