Ever been to the IKEA in Emeryville? Did you know it used to be the site of the largest shellmound in the San Francisco Bay area? Ohlone people lived in a village surrounding the site for more than 2,000 years. The shellmound was a ceremonial site and burial ground. Now it’s a mall.
Corrina Gould, leader of the Confederated Villages of Lisjan, leads a remembrance at the site every year on the day after Thanksgiving, now called Black Friday, to pray and remind shoppers of the history of the site and its meaning to living Ohlone culture.
A similar site in Berkeley is now threatened by a condominium and retail complex at 1900 4th St. You can read more about it on our blog: bit.ly/2Aypj3h and you can join the campaign by following the West Berkeley Shellmound facebook group: bit.ly/2CBEvhl
