What do you think about this Latin Mass debate? Feel free to comment below with your thoughts, I'd enjoy learning more.

"Respectful observance". You nailed it. Your understanding and appreciation for different traditions has grown because you have put in the effort. I am not Roman Catholic or Orthodox, but the Latin Rite and Orthodox practices still can be appreciated because they are respectfully observant. There is reverence there. There is the expectation that you'll have to put some effort into worship. God is not as accessible as way too many modern churchgoers think; yes, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock...", but which is more respectful? Getting up off your butt, turning off the TV, and maybe doing a little quick tidying on the way to invite Him into your life, or bellowing "come on in, it's open"? This ties into your last video on churches getting all "pop" to try and "get the message out." If Sunday worship has the same light show and loud music as the concert you attended on Saturday night, or the same movie you watched, then in what real sense have you set apart and made sacred a Sabbath unto the Lord? I think you prefer the Latin Mass because you are seeing that reverence and effort are far more conducive to connecting with God.

In my opinion, the Liturgy of Pius VI and the Tridentine form should both be used. Tridentine form should be used for solemnities, while Pius VI's Liturgy should be done ad orientem and used on days that are not solemnities.

I've been in there before. It was actually when the Auxiliary Bishop of Rockford was being trained for his first Latin High Mass. The sexton let me down into the basement to tour the reliquary of the saints. Having attended plenty of Latter-day Saint sacrament meetings, I know that these rituals would seem very unusual to you, but I agree that they serve the purpose of drawing one closer to the Christian faith in general, which is why I think that there has been a resurgence in attendance at more liturgically traditional Catholic parishes in recent years, if any of that makes sense. We strive to offset the sacred from the secular aspects of our lives, or we should hope to, and many people just don't want to attend church services which seem like everyday business meetings.

Parishioner of St. John Cantius here. Thanks so much for visiting this past Sunday. My family and I were at the 7:30 low mass with you. This past Sunday was a little unusual, with the relic of St. Jude visiting the parish. Quite out of the ordinary. We’re not usually lining up to venerate saints’ relics after mass!

If it makes you feel better, all of us Catholics feel pain from kneeling during Latin Mass. Try kneeling on Holy Thursday when Mass is 3 hours long! We think of it as a blessing in an act of humility and self mortification.

The priest that gave the homily was Fr. Carlos Martins. He runs a ministry called Treasures Of The Church, which brings people into an encounter with God through the relics of the saints. Fr. Martins is also an exorcist, and in his podcast, “The Exorcist Files”, Fr. Martins sometimes shares regarding the efficacy of relics in his exorcism ministry.

You did a wonderful job, David. Thank you for going and thank you for sharing. I love how respectful and understanding you are. My personal belief is if all those who love Christ can have unity we can be His. I believe this does not mean, in any way, let's change them, let's fix them, let's point out where they are wrong. After all that is simply a circular firing squad. I believe that means, hey all you who love Christ, I love Christ too; There must be some ground we can stand on together. I bet if we can learn to do that, we could probably even learn to appreciate each other's perspectives without feeling a need to force or sneak or coerce conversion to particular perspectives. I (not a Catholic) love the Catholic Church. Mother Angelica will always be one of my favorite people ever. I hate to see the civil war going on inside the Church. It appears (now I am on the outside looking in) some are trying to shift focus away from Christ and emphasize politics, marxism, and money. I know this same exact war is tearing apart the Protestant world. I hate to see it. I love your perspective and appreciate your focus on Christ. As indiviuals and families, we all have to stay focused on Christ and remember contention, anger, resentment, condescension are all tools of satan. Just like Tolkien's ring, the enemies weapons can never be used to serve God. For those caught up in that, instead of trying to prove why someone is wrong, i.e. tear down faith, try sharing something you know is Good, i.e. edify. Sorry, I got a bit preachy, David. God bless you, my friend.

I’m a Catholic convert from Presbyterian. The Catholic Church is the most biblical Church that I’ve studied. Yes there are extra-biblical teachings, but no anti-biblical teachings. As you mention, the Bible is front and center. The first half of the service is about the word (reading scripture and a homily), the second half is about the Eucharist. The Bible readings follow the life of Christ through the liturgical calendar. Jesus Christ is at the center of it all. The saints, Mary, relics, liturgy, sacraments are all about Jesus. If you study the Church Fathers, you’ll find they all hold Catholic beliefs. Thanks for keeping an open mind!!!

If you don't mind me asking a question: a lot of mainstream Christianity attack the Mormons, using the Bible verse to imply that Mormons add to and take away from the Bible, but how do you square this with saying that the catholic church uses extra-biblical teachings? Aren't those, by very definition, adding to the Bible what is not in there?

Sum up the ‘communion of the Saints’: 1. The prayers of a righteous person avails much. 2. The church is one. It is not separated by death 3. We ask the righteous departed (who are in the presence of God) to pray for us. It’s as simple as that. We DONT worship them. We simply seek their intercession to the Lord our God. May he have mercy on us….. Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world…. Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

The more they are a start-up or micro church (they only have I central building)the more they criticize you. My Catholic friends say they prefer it in Latin as well as it doesn't interfere with snap chat!😂 I have music CDs from the singing Georgian Monks and others like that because it does bring a calm even though I have no idea what they are singing, it just sounds good. This is my own montra when it comes to my spiritual level. "The man that See's farthest stands tallest and no man stands taller than when on his knees" Glad to see you continuing. I am LDS but took a online Latin class from the church. Sometimes I watch the mass. What I see is pre-Martin Luther Christianity in Western Europe. I don't care if you are protestant... you go back far enough and your European ancestors all worshipped like that. I cannot fathom when Christendom was a thing. When all worshiped the same in Europe. I read an older Catholic perspective on Martin Luther called The Truth about Martin Luther compiled by Patrick O Hare. Available on kindle and audible. Yes, critical. Yes, Catholic but Luther's apostasy from Catholicism. All that was changed in terms of the Priesthood, apostolic succession, sacraments, liturgy, the Bible, etc. Helped me see WHY the Lord had to restore his church through Joseph Smith. I mean it gave me a context from what was lost under Luther and other Reformers vs what was restored. In a lot of ways, Joseph Smith restored lots of Catholicism (not entirety and there was a reason for that) but perhaps as a Protestant, you may see that the entire Lutheran enterprise was an error (sorry to say). God calls us into deep relationship with him via the sacraments and covenants. Justification and Sanctification are accepted as separate in Catholicism, Orthodoxy and LDS.... it is the protestants who merged and mingled the two as outsiders dare I say? I am not slamming on you. I think you are realizing that Christianity looks more covenantal, holy, organized than protestant reforms changed. No ill will at all. That book on Luther was eye opening esp all the quotes from Luther himself. I was mainline protestant and I had zero idea what we really believed or how we got those beliefs and liturgy. All the best to you. St. John's seems very holy and reverential. Going quite against the modernist tide within their church.

Hey, im late here but im going to try to clarify the relic thing. So first of all, relics are not magic artifacts, but they help us with our faith. The presence of a bone of a marthir or a saint makes us remember that they where made of the same thing as we are, their saint life, can be achived by us today, with all of our problems, and suffering that we all have, as they did too. Relics were also a big part of the early church history, the early christians, where prosecuted and suffered martyrdom forr their faith. The local cummunities celebrated the mass over the toms of the martyrs at the catacombs, remembering the other christians, that others have died for their faith before. The bodies of the martyrs where also in some cases splitted and the parts where sent to other communities, that allowed all churches to celebrate over a part of the body of someone that gave it all for the faith. That culture of preserving and venerating the saints evolved also into venerating some important thing that they would carry during their life, like a rosary. And that evolved into thing that where touched by the saint. Hope that this coment clarifies some things.

I love the Latin Mass. However, as a child, I didn't understand it or what they were saying. But as you attend mass and understand the mass in English, you realize as an adult that you understand everything going on it a Latin Mass even if it is spoken in Latin. I think that is why I love my faith. No matter where you go in the world and attend a Catholic Mass, no matter what language it is spoken in be it French, Spanish, Asian, etc... you still are able to understand and appreciate the mass because it is the same no matter what language it is spoken in.

Then contemplate the corruption if the temple before Jesus came to restore right praise to the temple. They allowed Jesus to sanctify them. No world was left in them even while here. @eamonanthony6767 dude what are you even talking about? What telescope? You mock Joseph Smith as if you understand the LDS faith, but you don't. You think the creation of the LDS faith was merely a refutation of protestantism? Don't you think, if that were the case, Joseph would have just gone to catholicism? But, instead, Christ taught Joseph that ALL the churches and their creeds were an abomination. That goes for the catholics as well, along with their blasphemous rituals of veneration of saints, baptizing innocent babies, etc., not to mention the horrific history of how so many popes straight up murdered other popes just to gain power. Bro, I have nothing against modern day catholics - you believe what you want, so long as it draws you to Christ - but instead of being a total ass, maybe do some homework and see it from Joseph's viewpoint as well as the millions who have followed the faith. Maybe reach out and learn of your fellow disciples instead of attacking them. Try it! It might just be the first truly Christian thing you do.
