I've been excited about digging into this one for a while! I'm a bit behind the curve, but I finally got my hands on the C4 Synth from Source Audio, and it does not disappoint. It has so much crammed into it, that it can be a bit overwhelming at times. This video is VERY long, but I intend for it to be a good overview about diving into the editor and making your own sounds! I'll leave some time stamps below to specific sections of the video. Enjoy!
Introduction - 1:45
Dry Tone - 2:48
Pitch Detector and Global Parameters - 3:20
Initialized Patch and Mono Input - 5:50
Dry Bass With Filters - 6:55
Dry Bass With Distortions - 15:30
Tremolo Knob - 19:00
Monophonic and Polyphonic Pitch Voices - 21:00
Saw, Square and Sine Oscillators - 26:00
Envelope Discussion - 33:00
FM Synthesis!!!! - 37:55
Custom Patches with Explanations - 42:35
Blade Runner Brass with Strymon Volante - 43:30
Sequencer - 45:00
Harmonizer Block - 47:45

This video is essentially THE instruction manual for the C4 Synth if you plan at all on creating your own sounds. I have only a very basic understanding of synthesis, but thanks to Zach walking through how the signal is routed through the C4 and all the different things you can do with it, I think I have a very good starting point to get creative. Thanks!

Zachary, I bought the C4 after watching this demo. To help manage all the patches I created and to make them easily accessible at gigs, I also bought and hooked up the Disaster Area DMC Micro controller. That, along with my phone running the Neuro app into the Input 2, covers everything I need in terms of being able to quickly access patches. I've also started playing a lot more with the synthesisers in Logic because I now have a better understanding how they work thanks to your explanations. However, I really started to realise the power and versatility of the C4 when I was looking at many of the top-notch synths and realised that they were sadly lacking some of the features I was becoming accustomed to with the C4. Thanks so much for taking the time to go through this - believe me, you have changed the way I play - for the better! Best wishes for 2021!

Hey Zach. It's been months that I've wanted to tell you how great this video is. I waited to purchase the pedal until I could see your breakdown of the software. I reference this video every time I go to make a new preset. Such a great job! Question for you that I can't find the answer to anywhere: What is a "pole" when discussing EQ? I'm imagining a type of bar graph where if I have a 4-pole low pass filter, the bottom 4 poles (each one being its own freq?) are the only bars present. Am I on the right track?

I’ve got a somewhat unorthodox question and I’d love your take on it if willing. I’m a long-time bassist with multi-genre experience and I’m starting a top-shelf funk band. I love the idea of being able to cover/double some of the synth lines. I already own some synths for edm production and have an HX stomp with decent synths and I’m confident I could just bring keys as well if need be, but I’d prefer not to. I’m pretty set on the C4 due to size and ability and tracking, but I’m concerned I’m not going to use it enough to justify it. Do you have any thoughts/advoce/ examples of synth bass in use you could share? TIA, great video!

Hello! loved the review. One question, there's no midi port on the pedal. Can you connect it to a midi foot controller and change to any preset live? Something like an Boss es-8 for example.
@tonycot
@tonycot 4 жыл бұрын
You can't connect anything to this pedal with standard 5PIN DIN to TRS Midi cable as others. For these purposes you have to buy Source audio Neuro Hub(and connect your 5pinMIDI there) but you will have just lack of functionality. Only CC commands can be delivered. And if you need to switch a patch you have to use PP commands. So they can be delivered through USB-MDI hub with Ghost. And there is not so much teams building such.... Disaster area (So I feel it was done specially to make you spend extra money to run with full SO C4 functionality) micro can be good to use. So as for tracking and ability, Don't believe the video guy showcasing on... His bass is just "bulky" without a lot of sustain and brightness.(Like he use old strings or something). I mean if you will use something more Modern you will get the issues with tracking because of overtones created. I use Sandberg custom Explorer with two Sandberg humbs - the bass is a Rocky Gun and I experiencing the issues with tracking. If I use some cheapy bass with no presence the tracking is more or less accurate.

I use the Disaster Area designs DMC.micro to switch presets easily on mine though they advertise that any of their gen3 products can do it via the USB, it does require their Ghost USB adapter though. My only complaint is that the micro won't display the name of the presets on the display, only the preset number, the larger models with larger displays will.

@GPR100 4 жыл бұрын
@@tonycot A few things here. There is no other pedal in the synth/filter world that will give you this variety of sounds and depth of functionality for $240. As it comes, you get 6 presets of your choice with the ability to download community presets, tweak existing patches, or create your own from scratch. All of their pedals give you a ton out of the box for users who don't want to dive into MIDI programming & controllers in their setups. Of course they are set-up to function best with the SA Hub/controllers for those wanting to deep dive - they've developed all of these components to be hyper-functional together. If you talk to their support staff they will tell you that the goal is to make the One Series easy to use for people who just want a couple basic sounds that can be tweaked via the physical knobs, while giving users the option to go down the rabbit hole. A Disaster Area switcher and ghost cable was enough for my needs, but the Hub is only like $100 new... Regarding the tracking, what you're complaining about is just the nature of the beast with pitch-shifting, analog octaves, and other synth pedals. If you introduce more harmonic content (i.e. bright round wound strings, tone knob rolled up, hot active preamps with lots of treble, more bridge pickup, etc), the tracking inevitably suffers. I've got no reason to hype SA stuff, but this tracks as well or better than any octave, synth, and pitch shifting pedals I've had. As usual, rolling off some high end and cleaning up your technique is the best way to get any of these types of pedals to track accurately. He said he's using flats - so there's less harmonic content compared to rounds. On the other hand, the Dingwalls are pretty hifi and not shy on treble/clarity. From someone who uses bright wounds, I've got no complaints or issues with the C4 tracking...

That's great, but I tried to follow along on my phone app. And.....being that it looks so different on the Android app and nothing like your screen, and this is so complex, I couldn't even Follow along a little bit or get that Sequencer to work at all. I tried for a WHILE, JUST to get that same first tone you got and I just could find it in the app. Do you have to have the pedal itself set a certain way ? Like the switch in the middle on Triangle, Circle or square ? And the knobs a certain way ? You don't show the pedal at all here. The pedal did change sounds and I got a few things to change the sounds from the app, but I don't understand how they go together... I was mostly interested in the sequencing, which you only showed one example of, but I can't even get that thing to work at all. Maybe I should get a more simplistic pedal or something....lol I wish I could get it to work though !!!!! It seems amazing !!! :-/

I bought this pedal and noticed that the natural tone of the bass that is mixed with the effect sounds a little different, without really lower frequencies, have you noticed this? I play reggae and I also need frequencies below 80hz. I wanted to mix with a synthesizer, but I can't reach these frequencies even in the natural timbre of the bass when the pedal is activated.
