After a new hydrangea is rooted, it is important to begin pruning them when they are small. The best way to assure healthy, full plants in the long run is start early. For paniculata hydrangeas, and others, the most widely accepted and desired look is for a very full bushy plant with many blooms.... pruning them when they are small is how to do it! These are silver dollar and Limelight varieties.

While you can prune anytime I think ideally you would be better off pruning those as soon as there is enough growth to do so. That way you don't waste any more of the plants energy than necessary. Or if it's late summer wait until winter when most of the energy goes down into the roots & then trim the tops (& get hardwood cuttings) & come spring they will flush out & grow quickly. Just a thought.

Ideally, yes. No need to wait til the plugs are leggy to prune them. Best to prune when these are very tender and can simply pinch them with a thumbnail. But I have a full time life besides my backyard nursery, so I get to things when I can. Thanks- good words!

I propagate hydrangeas, especially the limelight. What I do with my one-year-old rooted cuttings is wait until late fall, early winter and then prune. I use the cuttings that I just pruned to create new plants. By this time of the year, I would say they are hardwood. I have a framed raised bed that I have filled with course sand (not the smooth sandbox sand). Before I place my cuttings, I let them all soak in water for a few hours. I must have over 200 at a time. I just shove them in the sand and give them a good watering. I also do the same with all the rose of sharon cuttings I have. In addition, I place boxwood cuttings, but not tiny softwood ones. I go down to where the hardwood starts. I have had about 75% success rate. I prefer hardwood propagation because I do not have to baby the cuttings so much. I have been doing this for over seven years and my little hobby has grown into a profitable side business. What I try to propagate are shrubs that root easily and that are not easily found at Lowes or Home Depot. To increase my profit margin, I now air layer my Japanese Maple trees and start them from seed too. I am up north in zone 5. Anyone can start with taking cutting from the shrubs they have in their backyards and slowly increase each year. My boxwoods, yews, and holly shrubs are best sellers since I sell 10 to 20 in one shot. They are perfect for hedges. With the new housing construction boom, I go straight to the site and make sales. The contractors are more than happy to buy from me rather than a nursery. I even offer landscaping advice and they end up buying a variety of plants that will offer blooms at least three seasons. That is a good selling point.

I do them as softwoods and hardwoods. I just have plenty right now and can't handle any more. Sounds like you've got a good thing going!

Vinnie1142 What do you do with the air layers & seedlings? Most Japanese maples have weak roots that tend to cause problems down the road which is why they don't sell them from cuttings or air layers & instead graft them. Also, seedlings don't come true from seed. Although seedlings from a variety like Bloodgood often have good color. So do you just use the air layers for scions to graft to your seedlings?

I notice that some of the leaves have holes in them. Mine is doing this and I thought I had a mean critter. What causes this and is it a big deal?
@savvydirtfarmer
@savvydirtfarmer 2 жыл бұрын
If you have plants, you’ll always have some holes. No problem at all unless it becomes excessive.

Love your videos! Will you be using the stems you cut as cuttings for now plants?
@savvydirtfarmer
@savvydirtfarmer 2 жыл бұрын
Not at this point in the season. But, generally, using those stems from newly propagated plants is THE way to turn one plant in 1,000 plants in one season.

I love your content. Just found you recently and will dive into more as time allows. I have native oak leaf hydrangeas I’ve started from seed gathered in our SW Mississippi area woods, and they are flourishing beautifully in cone-tainers. I wanted to mimic the area from which the seed were gathered so I put a little fountain pump to circulate the water in the deep tray that hydrates the cones. I may seem silly, but the movement of water and even the creek-like sound seems to be playing a positive part in the oak leafs growing so well. What do you think? Also, I’m really interested in your screened-in greenhouse behind you in this video. You built this? I will look for your videos for info. One more: Will you, or have you shown potting on (up) a plant that is root bound like those so that they continue thriving? Thanks, and God’s richest blessings to you and your family!

Thank you for all the timely information. I know that the pieces you cut off would be fairly woody but would you be able to propagate from those? Can you put them under mist our put in a jar of water? Have a great day ❤️🇨🇦

I could, but I have TOO many as it is. Also, being not too far away from colder weather, it's not the ideal season for it... at least the way I do it.
