Pruning My Giant Sequoia Trees and More , The Bonsai Zone, May 2023

My Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) trees are growing strongly and it's time to prune them.
I'm also pruning my root over rock Eastern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) clump, followed by all the tiny bonsai that I had displayed on my mini bonsai bench.

That little watering can of Matt's is a work of art along with the rake. What special gifts. I dabble in metal smithing and know the time it takes. Such is the respect he has for you Nigel. I love that you can actually use the can to water your miniatures.

For the mini bonsai trees, you can also get a dish, place mini pot inside. Add water till water is just below the lip of the top of the pot. You will get a nice thorough watering. That mini watering can is super cool also. Either way is good.

I so want giant sequoia and regular redwoods... That cypress, oh my goodness! I really does look like a huge tree, like I see in my area! Hopefully those cutting do well, you can have a mini forest of them. I doubt I'll find those up here. I'll have to make it down there for a visit! I need to save up more first LOL I'll probably fill my whole truck... Nice video Nigel! That little watering can LOL I love it.

Speaking of bare rooting. Papaya is one of them. If you transplant one, keep root ball intact. I have tried ten times to bare root & all declined into oblivion. My last one, root ball fell apart as I lifted it out of the pot & it did not survive. Just some thoughts. One never knows unless one tries.

I'm trying to keep a seed grown Giant alive in South East Queensland. It has to be in the ground over summer. Pots don't stay cool enough. Mine seems to be growing in a prostate form which is not what I was hoping for.

I started a few sequoia from seed this year. I know they don't enjoy super cold (or super hot) very much, but still need a cool period. Did you keep yours in the basement? Or greenhouse this winter? I know your greenhouse gets colder than your basement, just so I can get an idea of how to overwinter them.

They were overwintered in the glass greenhouse. I tried to keep it above freezing, but a few nights it went slightly below, -5 C at most.

I have a few giant sequoia seedlings too and mine were outside the whole winter. We had lows of -13 C here in Germany and all of them growing quite well now.

Hi, I have problems with a sequoia seedling, it grew about 15 cm this spring, and then one day it got a little dry and it went droopy, it's been like this for 2 days, a few lower branches that faced the sun have dried up. What can I do to save it?

Just wondering, have you ever attempted to do a fallen tree that refuses to die? Ive seen some trees that have done it in the wild and was wondering if it was able to be replicated.

I don't remember if he's done it. But many call it a raft. They'll pot it sideways, bend the trunk sideways or even snap the trunk. Then all the branches grow upward. I actually do that to the Mexican sunflowers in my front yard. It keeps the flowers below the three foot height my city requires, otherwise they will grow over ten feet tall.

Maybe the people in the forums were talking about more mature or established sequoias? Yours are young seedlings and have a higher tolerance for bare rooting. Seems like a bold assumption to say that bare rooting works on a handful of trees; I guess we’ll find out as you continue working on them

They say the same about Pines and I have been bare rooting mine for 30 years!
