I'm trying to get branching on the trunk of this young Japanese Black Pine. I had originally planned on making this tree a formal upright style, but I'm thinking now of making it look like the native White Pines of the North with a more windblown top to the tree.

It strikes me as a lot of work to edit through and compile your old clips. Well done for persevering. It does help a lot with understanding the context of the tree 🌴

I definitely also appreciate Nigel’s hard work- he does already have playlists of all his trees he updates as he uploads the work he’s done on them, so he’s saved himself a lot of effort ahead of time :)

Nice little black pine. I haven’t had any luck with pines yet (killed a few mugos) but think 2024 will be my year. I overwinter my trees outdoors here in Connecticut so I’m thinking maybe I’ll look for a Japanese white pine and give it a go. Thanks, keep growing

Thank you for your detailed updates on the history of the latest trees you have been working on. It must be a lot of work, but it is very helpful for us as viewers I think. Excellent work! I will be using some of your techniques on my own native pine, which I too am hoping to develop in a similar style. Nothing like driving the highways of Northern Ontario and seeing these graceful pines!

I love how you just keep doing things that work and prove the nay-sayers wrong! I have successfully taken off 1 air-layer from a JBP, and have 2 more on the go. It certainly has pushed the weaker lower branches to get stronger candles, and I may just get a nice tree in the end. Loving the progression on this one!

As always, I enjoyed watching you work on a tree. I've always wanted to work on a Japanese Black Pine, but I don't think they do well here in southeast Florida, USA. I would love to see your work on some trees that we use as a substitute for the Black Pine down here like the Podocarpus. Have to tell you that my husband and I trimmed our Carambola tree in the yard this morning. Used lots of the techniques that you explained while trimming the orchard at the Community Garden recently. So, your videos are extremely helpful not only for bonsai. Must be a bit colder there as you are wearing an extra shirt and a cap while working in the greenhouse. We have been going through a cold spell with temps down in the low 50s and 60s F. Believe it or not when you're used to warmer temps and humidity it does feel cold down here. Take care and Happy New Year.

Hi Nigel I have a Japanese black pine that’s not in good soil and needles are yellowing. Do you think I can do an emergency repot now and not before spring and get it into better soil? Can’t wait to see your tree grow great video 😊

Great job with this. It's nice to see how this tree has progressed and also very useful to hear your thinking in your decisions on where to go with this. Kinda surprised me to see you branch pruning in winter. Not that I'm an expert or anything, but I would have thought that this would be more of a springtime activity. Also, I assume you are sheltering the tree after the cut? It looks cold up there ! Thanks for your work on this!

This is exactly the type of video I needed, obvious.y takes a lot of editing, but so worth while for teaching, is a black pine the same as a scottish pine, I get a lot of seedlings from my gravel, in early years the pine needles., but I do not know how to identify them. I think the seedlings are from bird droppings. The pine leaves, needles look so out of proportion to the young tree,,, when do the needles start to look more in proportion ? From n east scotland.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 ай бұрын
These trees can be candle pruned and the second flush of needles will come in much smaller (usually). At this stage of development it's best just to let the tree grow and not worry about needle size!

I've never seen a plant push out itself from the pot in shuch a short time.....what do you think is the reason? fertilizing or you loose soil mix?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 16 күн бұрын
I think just strong growth, both up top and the roots! The tree is also not wired in the pot, so it can rise up more easily!

I know you don’t typically wire trees, but tbh a Japanese black pine and wiring go like peanut butter and jelly. Consider trying it out to give major wiggles to the trunk while it is still rather thin and flexible.
@TheBonsaiZone

I want a straight trunk on this tree, similar to the reference photos, but if you did want a wiggly trunk, this would be the time to do it!!

Ill never understand why you take a tree with so many low branchs and just grow it ten miles high only to cut it down. Create save spots and theeeeen grow it out
