HOW TO INFO: Most videos or forum posts I reviewed showed headtracking in use but never explained what settings you need to change in the War Thunder menu to get the i7 to work properly. I've tried to answer some of the questions I had and ones others probably had too. This will hopefully help out others, so here it goes... 1. Find an Rii i7 mini online. You can get them for about $15-$20. It works for War Thunder headtracking because it has a gyroscope in it (that's why some call it a gyro-mouse). It works kind of like a PS4 Dual Shock Controller does. 2. Don't go out and buy a PS4 camera because you don't need it for WT headtracking and the PS4 camera headtracking is pretty sketchy (imprecise). Save yourself $50 and just buy the i7. 3. The small USB dongle for the i7 remote is in the battery compartment. Remove it, put batteries in the remote, and plug the small USB dongle into the PS4. ***Side note: I'd also recommend buying a multi-port USB 3.0 adapter. Why Sony only put 2 USB ports on the PS4 makes no sense.*** 4. Start War Thunder and go into the Control screen. 5. Scroll over to Common Controls--->View Controls--->Mouse Look Activation-->(I mapped the button to activate/deactivate the i7 mouse "look around" movement to the R2 button on the HOTAS 4 throttle. Just bind whatever button that's easiest for you to press in order to use it as the activation/deactivation button) --> Camera Mouse Look Speed (I use 5%, adjust it to what works best for you)---> Camera Smoothness (I use 20% but again adjust it to what's best for you)--->Relative Camera Movement on Hatview = NO--->Invert Y-axis in Spectator Mode = NO ---> then click the O/Circle button to save the settings. 6. I bought a clip that clamps down firmly from the kitchenware area of Walmart and a 3 pack of them was about $2.50. They have a small magnet on them for holding papers on a refrigerator, and I also bought a package of some small self-adhesive Velcro squares. I used the "soft" part of the Velcro on the remote and the "rough" Velcro on the clip. That way if I detach the i7 from the clip the soft Velcro doesn't scratch anything up or get stuck on cloth/carpet/furniture. I also put the i7 on the clip "backwards", meaning I have the i7 pointing at the part of the clip I squeeze with my thumb and finger to open it. The reason is this way I can mount the i7 & clip either on my headset or the brim of a baseball hat and it points it at the TV. If you do it the other way, it'll be fine on the headset because you can clip it from the back of the head strap, but you can't do that to a brim of a baseball cap. I hope that helps anyone looking for a good, cheap, headtracking system for the PS4 and War Thunder. I don't see why it wouldn't work the same on a PC or XBox either. If you try it, let us know how it works. I can just about see 340 degrees in the cockpit now. You can look far enough to see the headrest for the pilot, just like if you were sitting in the seat in real life. You can't truly see directly behind you (a full 360 degrees) unless you have a button mapped to sit up high and stick your head out of the cockpit, which wouldn't be very realistic at 375+ mph!

@steveclark5206
@steveclark5206 5 жыл бұрын
Jax Joker Gaming I think so, as long as it is gyroscopic. If you buy a non-Rii air-mouse locally, check to see what their return policy is just in case it doesn’t work. The Rii can be moved around to use a virtual keyboard. Are you in the US? Try checking Amazon or eBay for the i7 Mini if you can, they usually have them ready to ship. If you go with another model and it works, please post the make/model of it so it can help others find what works and what their options are.. Thanks.

Chris Gardiner You’re welcome, and thanks for the feedback! It’s great to hear from people about what works or what doesn’t. I’m glad you’re enjoying it. Just an FYI that I added a Buttkicker Gamer 2 (tactile transducer) onto my chair and it adds that extra “something” to War Thunder. Feeling the engine rumbling, firing machine guns, and also getting hit with shrapnel and bullets is incredible. Playing Ace Combat in VR with the Buttkicker rocking away is immersive as hell. I’m planning on doing a quick video about the Buttkicker on my flight rig, smaller transducers on my Ferrari F1 rig, and larger Aura Bass Shakers under the seats of my home theater chairs. Keep an eye out for it if you’re interested.

Sega Head Thanks! And it’s actually pretty easy if you have some basic tools. I borrowed the saw and router from a friend. I later went to a Harbor Freight (sort of like Clarke’s in the UK) and bought some cheap tools of my own so I can use them whenever I want. I just laid out the printed templates on the sheet of MDF board, traced around them, and then cut them out. A few holes drilled to countersink the screws and a little wood glue and it was done. All the controllers: joystick/throttle, rudder pedals, head tracking and Multi Function Displays are all simple plug-and-play on the PS4 so no electrical knowledge needed.

Steve Clark Long-winded works for me; I’m the same way when I try to explain things to folks. I’ve always played War Thunder with the PS4 controller and had my looking mapped to the left stick while I’m simultaneously pushing down on L3. It hasn’t been too bad, but I’ve dreamt of being able to have my head movement tracked. Can’t wait for Amazon to get that K25 delivered to see if it will work! I had someone PM me and ask about the Thrustmaster Flight Rudder Pedals (TFRP) and mounting options. I just took an extra piece of left over MDF from when I made the cockpit and used black and yellow caution-style duct tape to cover it for a more military look. Then I used clear offset mirror hanging clips like these listed below. I put 2 each for the front, both sides and the back. They work great, are sturdy, and since they are clear they almost disappear. The red cable is actually just the cord for the HOTAS joystick and throttle. It’s a little short, so I used a plastic cord tubing to make it look sturdier and for some protection against abrasions. For mounting the flight stick I just used heavy duty Velcro. The Thrustmaster Multi-Function Display Panels are button boxes. I press a button and I can raise or lower flaps, retract or extend landing gear, change camera views and other stuff like that. I bought a 10 port 3.0 USB to plug everything into it. That’s the blue and red lighted bar you see to the right of my rig. It’s got a wall plug so I can always keep it powered on and that way it doesn’t draw too much power from my PS4. I almost never use the keyboard and instead I put an old iPad there to run the War Thunder app that has a map, enemy base location, altitude and compass and other flight info. I’m not trying to advertise for them, but I buy most of my gaming stuff (flight sim stick, racing wheels, etc.) from a company called B&H Photo Video. Starting around Thanksgiving (late November for non-US folks) they have awesome deals on a lot of gaming hardware with free shipping for the holidays. www.walmart.com/ip/Topzone-1-4-inch-Heavy-Duty-25-Pound-Crystal-Clear-Plastic-Mirror-Holder-Clips-Pack-of-12-Pieces/172818890?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=11989&adid=22222222227069152500&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=t&wl3=176556398285&wl4=pla-281480278690&wl5=9028249&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=117097460&wl11=online&wl12=172818890&wl13=&veh=sem&gclid=Cj0KCQjwuafdBRDmARIsAPpBmVXgIB0VskEBMURIardYDO4lSV89LlzSxffoJIrT8jsroAE8nldrXdYaAgamEALw_wcB

Yukmout B Thanks, it makes it fun to fly versus just using a DualShock controller. It’s actually pretty cheap to build a flight sim rig. It was about $80 to build, paint and decal the rig, a $5 chair from a thrift store, and I think it was about $150 total for the HOTAS joystick, rudder pedals and MFD panels (which I bought used off of eBay). And it was $25 for the head tracking; Rii i7 mini, clip & Velcro squares. So not too expensive if you already have the PS4 and TV.

Appreciate this video very much! I started to play warthunder on a ps4 last month and bought the hotas for sim battles because i was so taken in by the cockpit simulation, planes and what not. Only to then realized that if i want to be good i have to look arround precisely (tried to get it with DS4 Gyro first, not precise enough). I really would love to try VR but unfortunately i don't have quite the financials to switch to PC. This seems like a perfect option even today on a budget 🤩🙏 Maybe i can wire my old Fpv Goggles (from flying drones drones) up to if the tracker works. Would be a cheap setup in the end hopefully.

Great tutorial and cocpit thx for sharing! You can also track although its a bit bulky, with a dual shock 4 controler. The DS4 have also gyro sensors onboard.
@steveclark5206
@steveclark5206 5 жыл бұрын
Michel Lubbers That’s cool that the DS4 works too. Do you use the DS while you’re flying with it and move it to “look around”? That would make sense, because mounting a DualShock to your head wouldn’t be comfortable! Lol. Do you assign a button to activate/deactivate it? And how much movement do you need to do to look around? I’m also guessing it doesn’t require the PS4 camera since the DS has its own gyroscopes. I just want to learn something and be able to help out anyone that can’t try the other head-tracking but wants to try tracking with the DS4. Thanks in advance for any info and instructions.

How to set up your HOTAS joystick for Ace Combat 7: Press the red PS button on your HOTAS so it is your main controller instead of your DualShock. Options screen-> press X, use the Hat Switch (pointy cone shaped button on the the joystick) to highlight Flight Stick -> press X to confirm-> Camera (Normal or Inverted) -> use hat switch to switch to the camera you want (I use Normal) -> press X to confirm -> the picture on the screen is your HOTAS and what each button does -> press circle/O to back out of menu -> press circle/O again to get back to Main Menu -> now use the hat switch to select and highlight either Campaign, Multiplayer or VR -> press X to join whatever game mode you want and your HOTAS should be all set now as your primary way to control your aircraft. I’m trying to figure out how to make the TFRP rudder pedals and MFD panels operational on AC. The VR is pretty cool, and I like the game so far. Less sim and more arcade, but overall it’s decent.

I think my settings are listed in #5 of my “how to” post that is a couple down from this one. It’s amazing how much more fun the game is when you can actually look around. I wish they had PSVR support on War Thunder. That game is perfect for VR. If you decide to build a flight rig and need some help, let me know. I’ll be posting a video of my sim racing rig with some “how to” info about setting one up. I’ll be covering how to mount multiple tablets to get streaming car info, how to mount a Buttkicker Gamer 2, modding a TH8A shifter to quickly switch from a manual shifter to being able use it as a handbrake for DiRT Rally in less than 10 seconds vs having to put on a the sequential shifter plate and a few other things. I’ll also be doing one on my motorcycle sim rig. I’ve got the Thrustmaster Freestyler Handlebars working with the Brook Super Converter. It’s a lot of fun twisting the grip on PS4 racing games like Isle of Man TT, Ride 2 and Moto GP 18.

Now the weird part. If I try to actually look around with my head I get nothing. But if I press the look button and rub my finger on the front of the i7(almost as if it's a touch pad), I get head movement. Can't for the life of me figure how to make it work with simple head movements though, only with my finger, which of course won't work. Any ideas what might be going on? Regardless of my issues though this is a killer video and I appreciate it.

Anyone had any success with using the Rii Mini i7 and tank warfare. The binocular mode in tank battles would suit the head tracking perfectly but I just can't seem to get the trigger button to work.

Ed Cawdell Hi Ed. I tried playing with tank head tracking too, but it didn’t feel right. I kept quickly looking at my target and found I was firing a round way before my turret was even close to being on target. I’ll mess with it again this weekend and see if I can getting working correctly and then post it here. Are you using a DualShock controller? Did you assign a button that you press and hold to look around while in the tank, like you would in the aircraft? Your posts sound like you might have but that it’s trying to make the head tracking active all the time, regardless of whether you’re pressing the button or not. Does that sound right, about the problem?

tanberjan Hi. Yes the Rii can be attached to the headset, but you can’t use the clip like you would for a baseball hat or a regular headset. Just use another piece of Velcro to the left or right of the SONY logo on the VR headset. It will be to the side instead of directly on center, but you angle it in close enough that it works pretty well. I use the soft part of the Velcro on the Rii and the rough part on the clip and VR headset, that way if I detach the Rii it doesn’t scratch up the cabinet or get stuck on cloth.

Recon Scout Unfortunately real VR isn’t supported on the PS4 version of War Thunder. You can use your VR headset as kind of a TV monitor, but it’s not truly VR, it just looks like a really big and fuzzy TV. That’s why I just play it on my TV and use the air mouse for head tracking. Ace Combat is supposed to have some of its game VR supported, but not all of it (sort of like Gran Turismo Sport only has some limited VR mode and support).

Eugenio Mugnai Hi Eugenio. I’m not 100% sure with my answer because I’ve never tried it myself, but I think it should all work ok together since the PS4 recognizes everything separately. I use the DualShock controller for playing tanks and ships and the joystick for airplanes. My PS4 recognizes the MFD (multifunction displays), keyboard and Rii all at the same time without any issues. It might be worth trying as it’s only about $20 for the Rii and hat/headset clip with Velcro. I’ve never been able to get heard tracking to work in tanks if that’s what you’re trying to do. To be honest, I never tried too hard to get HT working with tanks because I think it would mess me up while playing. If you try using your KB&M together with an Rii, please come back and post the results to let us know. If you have that question, I’m sure others will too and you can help them out by letting them know. Thanks!

@@steveclark5206 Ok so far here is my experience: I managed to get the air mouse working quite flawlessly ,only issue is that my monitor is a bit too small, and it took a while to figure out how much sensitivity to put in. It's just a matter of "geometry and perspective" (the smaller the monitor the higher the sensivity needed, not a big deal though). As for the usage together with a standard USB mouse, Ps4 only recognizes one mouse at a time, so you have to play a bit with key activation (a bit too complicated to explain) and possibly unplug the Rii air mouse dongle once done playing or unplug it while playing tanks with M+K (again, not a big deal). As said before, thank you again for the helpful guide :)

Hi again Ed. Let me play around with the settings and see if I can remember which sets head tracking to “always on”. I know it can be done because I had it like that for awhile when I first started playing War Thunder using the head tracking. The problem was it was always looking someplace I wasn’t and was kind of disorientating while flying. So to fix that I mapped a button I pressed to “snap” the camera back to center. It helped but I was having to hit it all the time to center the camera, so that’s why I then set it up to press and hold to look around, and letting the button go stopped the head tracking and snapped the camera back to center. I’ve got to get back on WT and figure out Tank head tracking and see what the setting you need is too. I’ve been playing Ace Combat 7 in the VR missions which is cool and my joystick works but the rudder pedals and multi function displays don’t work. Plus after about 30-45 minutes I start to get some motion sickness, which I never get in real life so hopefully I’ll get over it in VR flying.

MotoBrutale Hi, thanks for watching. It’s been awhile since I’ve played Elite, but I can confirm that on the PS4 the HOTAS4 joystick does work, and it’s great. Unfortunately the use of the keyboard control is limited to just the communications and chat feature, so you can’t use it (or the MFD panels) to bind actions to control your ship. The head-tracking, VR, and rudder pedals also aren’t supported. Like I said in another post here, it’s been quite some time since I played E.D. so it’s possible they’ve added those options since then. The PC version offers quite a lot of gameplay/control options the PS4 doesn’t, but the good thing is most of the stuff on the flight rig (except for the PSVR of course) does work with the PC too, not just the PS4. So if you’re willing to play on a PC you can build a nice sim rig pretty cheap.

TL;DR A joystick is fun and more natural to fly with, but it’s not required and using a controller just takes some practice and adjustments to get good with. Hi. A joystick and throttle (HOTAS/Hand On Throttle And Stick) is much more immersive and “natural” compared to using a controller. But I’ve seen some excellent pilots who use a controller (or keyboard and mouse). If you can find one at an affordable price, I’d definitely recommend getting it. Mine is the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS 4 and it has the ability to twist so you can also use it as a rudder. I decided to use the Thrustmaster TFRP (Thrustmaster Flight Rudder Pedals) because I found it more natural to use instead of twisting the grip. Hope that helps you make the decision.

The instructions and other info are listed in the posts below. Here’s a cut and paste of them: The small USB dongle for the i7 remote is in the battery compartment. Remove it, put batteries in the remote, and plug the small USB dongle into the PS4. ***Side note: I'd also recommend buying a multi-port USB 3.0 adapter. Why Sony only put 2 USB ports on the PS4 makes no sense.*** Start War Thunder and go into the Control screen.

It sounds like you’ve got it to “bind” to a button NOT to work when the button is pressed and held, THEN it becomes active when you release the button. B Kng For the video I over exaggerated the movement just to show how it works. While flying you’re turning the joystick to bank the plane, and being able to turn your head slightly to already be looking where the plane will be a split second later on the screen makes flying much more natural. So you’re not really looking “away” from the screen, just keeping up with where you’re going. It’s hard to explain but it really does work. And you’re right, VR is way more immersive but the only flight game it works on is Ace Combat 7, and that’s only for a few missions. I’m kind of disappointed Sony and game developers didn’t really work to make more quality games for PSVR. DiRT Rally (1) is incredible in VR and you can play all of the content wearing the VR headset.

Hi, and sorry for not responding earlier but for some reason YT hasn’t been notifying me of new comments. I haven’t tried it on XBox, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. It’s the game War Thunder that allows its use, not the console itself. Of course the only difference would be what buttons you’d assign since you don’t have square, circle, triangle, etc. And you don’t have to use the Thrustmaster HOTAS 4. War Thunder allows a lot of different joysticks to be used, but I’m not 100% sure of which ones Microsoft allows on the XBox. I’ve talked to other “pilots” and I do know that the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS One DOES work on the XB. If you go to the warthunder.com forums and/or do a google search for “joystick on Xbox for War Thunder” or something similar to that. I know a lot of XB and PC players use a mouse & keyboard, but I enjoy flying it like a sim using a joystick and rudder pedals.

lance taylor No camera is needed (at 1:26 in the video I mention it). The PS4 camera can be used for head tracking in War Thunder but it doesn’t work very well. A gyroscopic (“Air”) mouse doesn’t need a camera to track your head movement. It kind of works like your DualShock controller does on some games where you can move it or tilt it to make something on screen to move. If you look through the comments you’ll see a few different brands of air mouse (mice?) that will work in addition to the Rii I7 Mini I’m using. Yes, you can. As long as you hold down whichever button you’ve programmed as “look-around” it’s easy and natural to track another plane during a dogfight. @@ulungprabowo I had the same issue with the DS controller, it wouldn’t track for very long before losing calibration. No issues at all with the “air mouse” as it stays calibrated with no issues. You don’t have to use the Rii I used, any presentation mouse/remote that has Bluetooth and a gyro sensor should work. And consider adding the clip so you can attach it to a hat or headphones. Makes it a lot more accurate and easier to use since in that position it’s almost perfectly lined up with you line of vision. And yes, I found it helped on War Thunder arcade mode, but realize in that mode the * before your name lets all the PC users know you’re on a PlayStation so they’ll swarm you looking for an easy kill. That’s because they’re using a mouse & keyboard and just need to put the cursor on your plane and click the mouse button to fire and kill you (it’s basically like they have auto-bot aiming). You actually have to fly and maneuver the plane using a controller or joystick. If you play the other modes like Realistic and Simulator you’ll have a better chance. I’ve found that Realistic is the most challenging and fun. Simulation is awesome but you better have a button box and joystick because you have to manage a lot (!) of different aircraft controls (trim, flaps, propeller pitch, etc.).

I used to play war thunder aircraft with mouse aim too (mouse aiming but using ds4 controller), but most of the time I play tank only because tank RB is so awesome and because mouse aiming in air battle is so silly in my opinion. After I watched Top Gun Maverick I start want to do a dogfight and watching on youtube mostly use DCS and war thunder and make me wonder should I save money for PC but this morning I accidentally watch your video and some other using air mouse on the head. I just can't wait my air mouse to arrive 😂

TAkridge Hi. I think you’d get bored watching me fly; I’m not that good! Lol. But if there is anything specific you’d like to see, such as head tracking in use, setting up the button layout/controls on the joystick, how the MFD panels function as a button box for flaps and such, let me know. If you’re looking for flying tips, I can link you to a KZfaqr I watch who explains maneuvers and tactics much better than I ever could and his videos are really well made and it’s easy to follow his directions. His name is long5hot and here’s a link to one of his many excellent “how to” videos: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZ2kfMV0qcWXe2g.html He’s on a PC, but the tactics work on a computer or a console equally as well.

Can you tell me how to hook up my rudder pedal to use them?
@steveclark5206
@steveclark5206 5 жыл бұрын
TAkridge Sure thing. Do you have a Thrustmaster HOTAS 4 joystick and throttle? If you do, run the connection wire from the rudder pedals to the RJ12 plug-in jack on the back of the joystick portion of the controller. Be sure to calibrate them in the War Thunder set up menu. There’s a USB adapter, but I think that only works for computers and not the PS4 (because you have to download software drivers). Remember: sliding the right rudder pedal up/forward should also turn your airplane to the right, and vice versa for left turns. That’s how real aircraft use the rudder pedals to help “steer” and maneuver the plane. And if you press the top of the pedals down, those are brakes used on the ground while taking off to help align your plane straight. Brakes don’t do anything once in the air. I mounted my rudder pedals to a piece of scrap MDF board covered in black and yellow caution tape using plastic offset mirror wall mounting clips. You could also just use heavy duty Velcro strips. Home Depot or Lowe’s will cut the board to size for free, or you could probably find a wooden kitchen cutting board from Walmart that would probably work too.

lance taylor Unfortunately I haven’t found any PS4 racing games that support head-tracking. The closest is VR games, but of course you need the PSVR and PS camera for them (Gran Turismo Sport, DiRT Rally, Drive Club VR).

What are those radars?
@steveclark5206
@steveclark5206 3 жыл бұрын
Those are Thrustmaster Cougar MFD. They are are NOT video screens (even though you can mod them to use screens on the PC). It’s basically a button box that allows you to map functions to such as raise/lower landing gear, wing flaps, bomb bay doors, change views, etc. The center of the “screens” are just printed out cardboard photos of radar. They plug into a multi-port USB strip that is then plugged into my PS4’s USB port. I use an old iPad and the War Thunder app as “radar”, guide map, objectives, allies location and stuff like that. www.thrustmaster.com/en_US/products/mfd-cougar-pack

Sam Shaw Unfortunately, no it doesn’t. Just War Thunder so far. I wish more flying and racing games would utilize head-tracking, or better yet, PSVR. If you haven’t played War Thunder, give it a shot. It’s free and is a great game (tanks/planes/ships). You can buy extra DLC vehicles, but that can be expensive. But at least you can grind for awhile and update your vehicles for free if you don’t want to pay real money for DLC content.

While I haven’t personally tried it, but others have reported that they’ve got it to work on the PC. Of course you’d be assigning other buttons than I used for the PS4 since you don’t have square, circle, triangle, X.

Do you know if this works on ps5?
@steveclark5206
@steveclark5206 Жыл бұрын
I don’t have a PS5 so I can’t confidently answer yes or no on that question because I haven’t tried it myself. But if War Thunder on PS5 is even remotely similar to the PC/PS4 version I would thing the “gyro mouse” would work on it for head tracking. Fortunately a gyroscopic presentation mouse like the Rii Mini I used are pretty cheap (under $20) so it might be worth giving it a try.

Húxiān Cyclops 4 Nope, it was actually pretty affordable. I paid $35 for the sheet of MDF, about $40 for primer and paint, about $20 for various screws, nuts and bolts and other fasteners and $35 for decals. Of course the TV and PlayStation were about $400, but I already had them. It was about $200 for the Thrustmaster HOTAS 4 joystick, TFRP rudder pedals and MFD Cougar panels. So while it wasn’t “cheap”, I paid less to build it than what I’ve paid to buy a new Driver and Putter for my golf bag.

Kamic J Buy what for $261.89? The Rii i7 mini I use for head tracking was less than $20. Unfortunately PSVR doesn’t work with War Thunder and works on only a few missions in Ace Combat 7.

Great set up but man if you're using this for ace combat and war Thunder you are beyond underutilizing your recourses. I recommend getting DCS on Pc. It's the most realistic simulator on the market
