Battle of Hodowo (June 11, 1694) - the battle between the Polish and Tatar troops during the Polish-Turkish war (1683-1699). Win by the Polish side thanks to the hussars' charge, despite the power ratio of approximately 100: 1 (approx. 40 thousand Tatars against 400 Poles). Polish win 💪💪💪

40:1 is a number of soldiers in Battle of Wizna. There Where 40 german soldiers for 1 Polish soldier, but Polish army was still fighting, untill all of them were dead. And long Time ago, Spartans have their own Battle with Persians in Thermopylae, when there Where 40 Persians to one Spartan Soldier. So 40:1 in Sabaton's song means that Wizna is Polish Thermopylae.

About 700 lightly armed Poles fought against 42,200 Wehrmacht infantry soldiers supported by 350 tanks, 657 artillery pieces and Luftwaffe for three days until they got totally annihilated (40 captured). In fact, the ratio was 60:1.

it's a Swedish band, but it deserves recognition in the eyes of Poles because it is one of the few foreign bands that sings so many songs about our history. In addition, they consider us a brave nation and in one of the interviews they said that no one fought so much for freedom and was brave alongside the Scots and the Finnish.

"The captain has pledged his life I'll face my fate here' This line is telling about cpt Raginis who commanded the polish forces which defended Wizna. There were 720 men fighting in few bunkers trying to stop whole german panzer corp - about 40.000 of men and 500 tanks. Impossible mission, but Raginis swear that he will defend his position or die defending it. After three days of fighting all the bunkers fall and there was only the command bunker which was still fighting. Almost all defenders were dead. Cpt Raginis was heavily wounded. Germans were furious that they cannot brake polish resistance send an emissary, with demand that remaining soldiers should give up in an hour or they will shot all captured polish soldiers. Then Cpt Raginis ordered soldiers who was with him in bunker to come out and give up. He stay in bunker alone and kill himself with hand granade. From the 720 polish soldiers defending Wizna germans took about 70 prisoners, rest of the defenders died in battle.

I was lucky to know personally one of the defenders of Westerplatte in September 1939, who was my cousin's grandfather. A wonderful warm man - a real hero, who was taken prisoner by the Germans after the capture of Westerplatte. He managed to escape from a German camp disguised as a woman and returned to his family in 1945. He died in 1999. Honor and glory to the heroes !!!

I don't know how much this is true (especially today), but I remember years ago when I heard someone making fun of the skills of soldiers of other nations. He commented on it with these words: "In the United States, training a soldier takes as much as learning to drive a car in Poland. The average Polish infantryman is trained like special forces in other countries." There are a lot of historical stories about how Polish mercenaries managed to change the face of the battle. If there was a battle at all. Apparently, during the 1000 years of our documented history, there have been cases when the enemy gave up knowing that he would have to fight against the Poles. Another anecdote I cannot confirm to be true. Hitler allegedly attacked Poland in the first place, hoping for a successful blitzkrieg because he knew that after defeating the Poles, the rest of Europe would not be a challenge. And there are plenty of such curiosities (although they sound like megalomania). The best English fighter unit? Polish people. The best unit of Napoleon? Polish people. One of the best melee weapons in the world? Katana? No, Polish hussar saber. Who was the first to end US slavery? Pole. Who designed the vehicle the Americans rode on the moon? Try to guess. There are a lot of such things. That's why I'm always pissed off when I hear a Pole complaining that Poland is a junkyard in Europe. Because a fact. We have our downsides. For example, Poland in the times of being a kingdom was the greatest power only when a puppet of another country sat on the throne. We achieve the most under the patronage of others because we cannot govern ourselves ... but it is difficult for good governance in a country where everyone knows best XD

Never underestimate the Polish fighting spirit. The enemy may have a huge advantage in numbers, but he will pass to our land only over our death bodies. 40: 1 is supposed to mean the numerical superiority of the Germans over the Polish army that day. Our soldiers always fight to the end. Greetings from Poland

The Swedish band "Sabaton" honoring Poland and Warzawa, where about 1000 Polish men and women stood strong against 40 000 Nazis. You must see Sabaton live concert in Poland from 2012 ...it will give you goosebumps! Over 500 000 in the crowd who knows every word from this song! And a gigantic Polish flag rolled out over the crowd. If you want to hear the whole story behind this. You can always go to Sabaton history channel (Yes they have their own history channel!) ...There they will explain everything better than I do. ALSO pls check up their song "Uprising" ...Its about the same thing....and just as powerful!!!!

40 out of 1, because in this battle known as the Polish thermopylae, there were 40 German soldiers per one Polish soldier. The defense lasted 3 days, and the Germans had serious problems to cross this border. It is worth noting that Poland had inferior weapons and had only infantry and bunkers in this battle, and the Germans had infantry, armored brigades and air support. The Poles in this battle had only about 700 infantry soldiers, and the Germans had 42,000 soldiers, 350 tanks and a lot of aviation support. It is worth mentioning Captain Władysław Raginis, who swore that he would not leave the battlefield alive and when he ordered the last 40 soldiers to surrender, he blew himself up with a grenade to fulfill the oath and not be captured by the Germans.

Well, Sabaton is metal band for Sweden, They make music about history from around the globe (mostly military). Best known Polish metal band would be Behemoth and Vader. There are too many nuances in this song (in many of their songs) to point them in comment but: Captain faced his fate - Commander of Polish defence sad before the battle that He will rather die than surrender, and when crew of his bunker finally surrendered (none supplies, meds, ammo etc...) He just hug a grenade to his chest fulfilling his promise. I could go like this for hours, but it's just a comment :) And it's not about how strong Poland was, rather how da*n stubborn pols were and how we was ready to face and unthinkable odds 40:1 about 40 000 germans versus 720 poles.

I recommend reaction to more Sabaton songs, not only is it great music but you can learn a lot of very interesting stories that deserve to be remembered. By the way this is a Swedish band not Polish. They sing about the history of many nations and there are several other songs about Polish history, for example "Inmate 4859" (about Wojciech Pilecki who was like secret agent in Auschwitz death camp and he helped many people to escape from there) or "Uprising" (about Warsaw uprising in 1944), but there are songs much better than theese, so You have a lot of amazing songs to react. Greatings from Poland :) (and sorry if I made any mistakes, my English isn't perfect)

The Battle of Wizna, also called as "Polish Themopylae". About 350-700 Polish soldiers (quite often you can find information about 700 soldiers) lead by 20 officers had to stop the Nazi Germany invasion of about 42,200 soldiers, 350 tanks, 657 of mortars and gun artillery and also 600 Luftwaffe planes support. The Polish army equipment was at least 20 years old and during the times of invasion, a lot of our tanks and planes has been serviced, which means they were unable to support troops. They fought for 3 days. As they ran off ammunition, cpt. Władysław Raginis did order survived soldiers to surrender. Only a few dozens of soldiers was captured as POW - the rest was killed during fights. However cpt. Raginis, as he promissed to not let enemies take the Polish lands untill he's alive, he suicide himself with a hand grenade in the bunker. The accurate losses are still unknown for both sides. The only confirmed informations are that Wermacht did lost at least 10 tanks and some armored vehicles in that battle. No wonder why they were calling us the "Black Devils"...
I Can't Believe We Did This...
