CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The FBI raids the lodge Dillinger (Johnny Depp) and his gang are hiding out in after a bank robbery.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on author Bryan Burrough's ambitious tome Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43, director Michael Mann's sprawling historical crime drama follows the efforts of top FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale ) in capturing notorious bank robber John Dillinger. A folk hero to the American public thanks to his penchant for robbing the banks that many people believed responsible for the Great Depression, charming bandit Dillinger (Johnny Depp) was virtually unstoppable at the height of his criminal career; no jail could hold him, and his exploits endeared him to the common people while making headlines across the country. J. Edgar Hoover's (Billy Crudup) FBI was just coming into formation, and what better way for the ambitious lawman to transform his fledgling Bureau of Investigation into a national police force than to capture the gang that always gets away? Determined to bust Dillinger and his crew, which also included sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi), Hoover christened Dillinger the country's very first Public Enemy Number One, and unleashed Purvis to take them down by whatever means necessary. But Purvis underestimated Dillinger's ingenuity as a master criminal, and after embarking on a frantic series of chases and shoot-outs, the dashing agent humbly surmised that he was in over his head. Outwitted and outgunned, Purvis knew that his only hope for busting Dillinger's gang was to baptize a crew of Western ex-lawmen as official agents, and orchestrate a series of betrayals so cunning that even America's criminal mastermind wouldn't know what hit him. Marion Cotillard, Channing Tatum, and Stephen Dorff co-star.

What I love about this scene is...NO CGI. Strickly blanks and actors who had hired gun experts to train them. Its worth the extra money to invest. Nowadays you see actors who don't even blink or flinch when there's a shootout going on. Thumbs up for Public Enemies with Michael Mann!!!

Great movie, and historically rooted, but a bit unlikely. It’s not to say that shooting into and out of the house wouldn’t have happened, but that sustained automatic fire is unrealistic. It’s so wasteful of ammo that it’s generally only used for suppression while trying to escape. Standing at the windows shooting that much ammo and not shooting/running/shooting/running until you have an exit is crazy. Makes for a good action scene though.

A tree of that size might be able to stop a 45ACP FMJ bullet, but standing next to a window behind that wall is like standing behind a cardboard poster, that person would be full of holes in no time under that many full auto Tommy guns spraying. Gangsters don't shoot blanks :)

Never watch a historical era movie for the history... It's a story from the filmmaker's perspective. Everyone that has a gripe for its history but still love it, shows how great this film was. For the liberties taken we can definitely feel the complex tones. Imagine that particular time where the world were peaking through the Golden 20s... But USA was fighting the most successful invaders, the Mafia likely being the top. The media then made their public enemies Celebrities. US Law Enforcement has had a hard time throughout history.

That's exactly how I felt watching it, the characters and actors portraying them are great. But the camera work is just it, I think the sort of camera work from what he did in heat would have been better. Not the type of camera work from Collateral, which I like as it suits the film. But in Public enemies it just doesn't suit it.

Actually, it was a one-way shootout pretty much. Shooting the civilians alerted the guys inside, who escaped out a back window. The wives went to the basement. Nelson was in an auxiliary cabin near the garage. He may have shot off a burst, probably from his M1911 "baby machine gun". He ran off. The agents pounded the lodge for hours, and finally figured the men were gone. I saw the joint it happened in. Left of the entrance door is newer and wasn't there in '34. The old section has holes preserved from the shootout, and some suitcases and clothes, etc. on display. Wanatka made it a tourist magnet, and his son ran it until he was too old. The entrance is plastered with newspaper pages of Dillinger adventures. It's on Rt. 51 south of Manitowish Waters on Spider lake.

While doing some research about fully automatic pistols, I found out about a local gunsmith named Hyman Lebman. Mr Lebman owned his own shop and would do custom work in it. Some of his custom work included a few customized fully automatic colt 1911, some of which would be sold to Mr. Dillinger and Nelson. According to the story, one of these guns was found at the new bohemian lodge after the shootout, so needless to say I looked for this clip (from one of my favorite movies ever) as soon as I could. Well I'll be damned! There it is! First gun baby face nelson pulls out at second 0:16. Just another reason to love this gem even more!

Crazy thing is the lodge to this day still stands with all of the bulletholes and various damage.. You can visit it and its on my list of places to go see. Puts you at the scene of a crazy shootout where your mind can line the dots together.

Watching Public Enemies felt like I was watching a B roll footage of a movie that would have kicked so much butts of other action movies. Digital filming just didn't work with this...

It looks like it wasn't shot at 24fps like most films. And the grading could had added a bit of flatness.

It's because Michael Mann decided to change the shutter speed on the camera. It makes it look like 60fps or something, as opposed to the typical 24fps hollywood movie look.

you know this scene is inaccurate in the fact that Nelson did not die at little Bohemia infact he eventually became public enemy number one and it took no less than 17 bullets to Kill him

Michael Mann knows how to direct epic shootout sequences. This movie and Heat have stand out shootout sequences, Heat being superior. Nothing can top the Bank Heist shootout from Heat.

Movie mistake at 0:38 , Purvis is first shown shooting with a straight magazine, then suddenly with a drum magazine, and again back to reloading with a straight magazine.

As always Micheal Mann knows how to make a film, purely an underrated movie, and performances by Depp, and Bale. Excellent scenes, and realism espically in this shootout scene, and throughout the film. Soundtrack, cast, dialogue and much more, what a masterpiece.

They got the sound of distant gunfire and bullets flying overhead down very well. They really do make that snapping sound when the pass by you. I unfortunately had some guys accidentally shoot over my head one time. I live in an area where you can just go out in the middle of nowhere and it's legal to shoot. Some idiots didn' fully scout the area and setup on a bit of an incline behind me and started doing target practice. It was really damn scary lol.

Nah. The Thompson only held a 45 pistol round, it was only effective at mid-to-close range & had a habit of jamming with the drum magazine. Yamamoto was probably scared of the Browning Automatic Rifle.
