Ever ordered raw oysters on the half-shell at a nice restaurant? What about the idea of harvesting delicious seafood on public beaches for free? We've got your covered on both fronts in this video as we take you inside our annual oyster harvesting party on a public beach!
We even introduce some new friends from the Midwest to the incredible seafood harvesting opportunities in the PNW. You won't want to miss their reaction to eating raw oysters!
Keep in mind, raw oysters shouldn't be consumed on a beach closed to shellfish harvesting or between the months of May-September. You can still harvest these awesome critters and cook them thoroughly though. Checkout this link I mention in the video: wdfw.wa.gov/places-to-go/shel...

Thanks for all your great videos. You really inspire the PNW Life. After watching your video, I love foraging oysters. These eaten raw are awesome, but even when fried in panko, they compete well with the razor clam fry too.

Oysters have a high amount of Iodine which is absolutely necessary for men and women --- Babies born with zero iodine will likely be special ed. In 1972 when they took iodine out of the bread and replaced it with bromine --- breast cancer went through the roof (one out of seven women get breast cancer) that could be avoided by taking iodine every day. We grew up having oysters once per week for that purpose. Also Lugol Iodine is available on Amazon so one can take a few drops every day if it is difficult to get oysters. Babies with high amounts of iodine in the womb will often genius...

@@PNWBestLife I am pretty sure the exclusion of may-September is a myth. On the Olympic peninsula local harvested oysters are served at the restaurants all summer raw. I cannot find anything on wdfw that says anything about that. The proper handling guide (wdfw.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2020-10/bklt_processing_wa_oysters_for_eating_and_recipes_1.pdf) does not mention I could be missing something and would love to know if you have a reference for this. Rather be safe then sick Great channel!!

Yeah, you are probably right regarding safety, but it’s a pop up on the second link in the video description that says not to consume between May - Sep raw. I’m sure it’s just a low probability factor, but I gotta share that as I don’t want someone coming back to me claiming my advise / guidance made them sick.

Unfortunately wdfw is mismanaging this great resource in Puget Sound and Hood Canal and once great beaches are riddled down to almost nothing, we'll actually nothing since what's left isn't worth harvesting!

@PNW Best Life well I suppose I'm observing things from more than 35 years of hitting the beaches and wdfw has made some year round beaches seasonal but haven't done enough to protect other beaches as the population has significantly increased. One of my favorite oyster beaches with ample large oysters that I've enjoyed for years has now been turned into a wasteland essentially with barely legal size and empty shells.

I’m sorry man, that always sucks to feel like things are getting worse and not recovering. I can give you some beach ideas privately if you’re interested
