Un oh.....Faye is becoming an engine builder instead of an engine assembler. That can an extremely rewarding. And expensive if you start buying tools....lol. Real engine building is a dying art and guys like Danny are few and far between. Most of them with knowledge like him are old grey beards, and at the tail end of their careers. Learn from him whatever you can!

Fellow Texan and Toyota driver and enthusiast here! I have been enjoying your super helpful informational Supra videos. I have gotten myself into a lot of work I wasn't prepared for (not a trained mechanic, a new found self discovered DIYer) in attempt to perform a needed head gasket replacement on my '06 Tacoma with 218K miles and then hopefully more to come. Entertained by your cute chicken love, but more importantly I am so grateful for the information I've already gained from your video and will be watching many more very soon.

Just the little engine, a 2.7L. And I finally FINALLY got 'er finished just last night!! I did not know what a challenge I was going to be getting into taking the entire project on by myself until. It was too late, but I can honestly say that your videos full of knowledge from both you and Danny were a motivating guiding light that made it possible. Thank you again for your awesome smile, your perky spirit and all of the dedication that so clearly goes into your channel to make your daily grind become shared information/entertainment for the world to find. I am now and will always be FOREVER a FAYE FANATIC!

Ooh, and I had to embark on the repair issue due to the engine overheating due to my slow response in treating the coolant leak that first developed from my corroded coolant bypass pipe (OEM it comes from the factory as a doomed part as it it a plastic pipe in a very hot area of the engine, but has been updated in later year models to be a more suitable metal pipe.) The 05-06 as far as I know we're manufactured with this coolant bypass pipe made of ceramic/plastic that is bound to fail after reaching the "high mileage" (150k+ miles) stage of life. I hadn't discovered all of this until mine had reached the failure stage and then after repairing it, I believe it was just a downhill struggle as I had probably done the repair too late and the damage had been more extensive throughout the cooling system, combined also with my attempts before repairing the bypass pipe to quick fix my leaking coolant issues with stupid products such as Radiator Stop-Leak that potentially compounded the issues at hand rather than fix anything. That said, it was at the 200,000 miles and beyond point that I began having major issues with overheat almost everytime I drove the truck, that ultimately led to my decision to tackle the head gasket repair job myself after being quoted by a mechanic $4000 to do the job. I learned ALOT doing it myself, and it only ended up costing around $1400 total (new headgasket, radiator, water pump, thermo, etc.) by doing all the labor myself. I can honestly saw that I have gained a new found appreciation for the difficult, and more often than not frustrating, work that you and other mechanics do on the daily!!

I have a question for you both..... have you or Danny have come across an engine that was running good and pulled out of the car because of a different issue not engine related but that engine sat for a while , heads where removed for porting but unfortunately the short block was left out and the weather got to it.... it had Ross aluminium pistons and h beam rods &crank still in it and now rust is on the cylinders 😭. Is there a way I can remove the rotating assembly (pistons) with minimal damage?

I am not a mechanic so this is not an argumentative question, but rather a technical "I don't know" question. As long as you are being super critical with the cylinder walls and piston tops, wouldn't the rings have some contamination too? Why not pull the pistons and ensure the rings are clean and ready to go as well? It seems that there is cylinder surface you aren't getting to as well and pulling the pistons would allow the whole cylinder to be "deglazed." I am obviously missing something. Just asking. I am a computer geek and am here to learn.
@FayeHadley
@FayeHadley 4 жыл бұрын
No problem I'm happy to answer!! I performed a leak down test before pulling the engine and so I'm very confident that the rings are in great shape and I also assembled the bottom end so I I'm not worried about someone else's work and double-checking it I feel very confident that I did it right the first time and I also have a trick for cleaning out the piston rings while the Pistons are still installed which I'm going to show you in a future video!!!!! but a lot of this series is showing what can be done by the regular person at home. Not everyone would have the confidence to tear apart their bottom end and remove their crank or yank their Pistons. Honing here was good cheap and easy insurance but not even super necessary!!!
@bechtoea
@bechtoea 4 жыл бұрын
The leak down test. I never even considered that you did that, which clears this up. Now the small area at the very bottom that you aren't able to hone or whatever (the part between the top of the piston and the rings themselves) is a trivial amount of cylinder wall and nothing that you all are worried about. This is all cleared up now. Thanks for the education.

Faye, You have the engine out. Don't bandaid it, you have the best teacher by your side. You have found such bad work already go the extra mile. Pull the pistons and the rings and mic the block. If it's good hone out the cylinders, put new rings in and put the engine together there while you are still at the shop. Then, put it on the dyno, break it in and see how much horsepower it makes. The goal is to have a car that runs.

Interesting video, but it`s a little bit strange to me, why are you not replaced piston rings? If pistons were covered with burnt oil carbon and factory hon almost vanished, then piston rings should be covered in carbon too. They may not take off oil from cylinder walls properly, which cause extended oil consumption and you`ll be needed to rebuild engine again soon enough...
