Visit my online store goo.gl/XrEiHu This video is meant to go along with a recent podcast episode goo.gl/dvky7e What are good pulse tig settings to limit distortion on an outside corner joint? Alex Brown is @cavemanwelder on instagram and we had him on the weldingtipsandtricks podcast recently where he shared some pulse settings he uses for limiting distortion and heat input on outside corner joints.

I tought myself to mig when i was 15 with my friends dads house mig machine. His dad saw my welds and thought they were ok for a 1st timer. He would let me weld a bit here and there. Got ok at it and got offered a better job from a customer because he really liked my work. He had some tig machines in his shop and allowed me to play around with tig. Well about 3 years later company owner goes to the Las Vegas car wash show to gain new customers and someone saw my work and got my information from the owner. Called me and explained who he was and what he did. Offered to move my wife, she was only my girlfriend at the time, and my newborn son and I across america and set us up for the first 6 months on top of a wage id never thought was possible. I am now sr. welder in charge of 1st shift with a team of 14. Man am I glad my friends dad let me mess with the mig lolol. Life would be completely different

Great video Jody. I graduated from welding school last spring. I have a mig welder but I really want to get a tig welder and start tig welding again. Because that's the welding process I was the best at in school. And I liked it a lot but your tig videos really help me for when I do start tig welding again. Thanks

I learned from the best, thanks Jody! I made a small tool box to take a few tools on jobs around work. Came out nice thanks to your lessons and arc shots. It's incredible how much we can learn here on KZfaq and the web. I made it from 11 gauge stainless. Did some pulse and 1/16 fill rod on some areas to play around with different settings on my fairly new Lincoln Square wave 200. I wish I could limit the background current and on time current to rule of 33. I have no idea what those pre set settings are on the machine. I pulsed at 2 a second and 125 amps. It looks good but bead profile isn't as defined as some others I see. I'm wondering if it's because the background current pre set makes it more difficult to achieve? I felt and less heat would have made for too slow travel speed and the settings felt about right. I used chill bars all around so color looked good. Have any tips pulsing with this machine? Happy new year and let's hope it's a great one for all of you!

Thanks for explaining all of this. I see now how pulse can limit the heat for tig. Will pulse mig like the feature in some everlast welders help limit heat when mig welding? Any comment on whether that would be the same for flux core? I sometimes weld thin sheet out in the breeze.

Hey Jody. Very helpful video, but I have a related question. We are running a Lincoln TIG 200 and mostly weld mild steel, but a new project involves 20 gauge Galvalum. Been running on 27 amps with 25psi has flow and no pulse, but we're still getting occasional blowouts. Should we be running a pulse setting? The only person with TIG experience other than mild steel was with Stainless Steel and a heavier gauge and he has trouble with it. Just looking for help to make it cleaner. Thanks in advance!

Jody, how much better is copper chill block than aluminum? I found some copper at my local metal shop, but its very thick (1") and therefore very heavy. If aluminum gets you say 95% of the way for chilling, it seems like it would be much easier to work with. Thoughts?

When you turn on the pulse are you switching to a torch switch, or does that just turn the pedal into a on/off switch for the settings? I haven't played with pulse much, still trying to learn the basics with my TIG skills.

I'm welding motorhats for machines and even with the pulse settings I cannot get this colour in the steel, is it because I dont have enough heat absorption ? Raising the pulse speed, increasing the gas.. nothing works. I use an angle grinder afterwards though and its sandblasted but it would come out with the same time if I could make it look like this, and just sandblast it right away. And it would look way better. Got any tips on how to fix this ?

I've been a plumber for 15 years. All I can do is solder and braze. I love watching your videos and one day I'll buy my own welder and start to learn how to weld. I actually have a question for some welders. The plumbing tech is actually getting away from soldering and brazing in favor of mechanical joints like Propress, and PEX systems for potable water, and we've gotten away from lead joints on ductile iron sanitary piping also in favor of No-Hub fittings, if not using plastics over iron pipe altogether. Is there any new tech in the welding world that is killing old welding tech? Or is it similar to the earlier days, now?

no filler metal? how is this you can do that with tig but if I try something like this with a oxy torch welder I end up lighting up the steel and burning the metal as though cutting it even when I blow the puddle over the other half I am trying to weld, this is not the first time I have seen a tig used without filler metal though saw it bond two parts on how its made on a machine torch? is this because of the higher faster heat of a tig or something? I was under the impression it took a filler metal to join the pieces of steel togather.

Hey Jody. Very usefull for a project I will execute - stainless tank for a boat. Made from 316SS 1/32" or 1/16" thick. Most of joints I can do with an angle inside and chill blocks outside. But to close the tank no way I can have this tools... I will try to flood the tank with Argon, but it is a LOT of gas (some 100Litres). Any advices on those final closing joints?

definitely purge with argon for the last joints. And even if you can only use chill bars on the outside, they still help pull out heat...even if you have to use tape to hold them in place
