Today we will be finally dyno testing the turbo big block mopar in my 1973 Dodge charger. This car is equip with a 1972 mopar 361 low deck big block, aluminum heads, dual plane intake, 750 cfm carburetor, gt45 turbo and a modest cam shaft. The rest of the drivetrain is a 727 automatic transmission, mopar 8-3/4 rear end on a 3.23 final drive. In this video, we're going to take a look at how we dyno tested a 1973 dodge charger SE with a big block Mopar 361 engine, and see how it performed on the turbocharged carbureted engine. Check out how the engine performed on the dyno, and see how we managed to get it running on a turbocharged carbureted engine. It's also not just peak power that matters the overall curve and how the power comes on greatly effects how it feels on the street. Torque also matters alot on the street. Of course gearing and power to weight ratio also matter alot.

I don't remember the last time I've heard the 361 engine mentioned . Though I had one in my 1960 Dodge 2dr ht. Matador. Goggle it. Mine was white. Pulled the 361 andistslled 61 413 from a Ney Yorker that engine was called A Golden Lion. It had a badge on the grill. A lot more fun to drive back in the late 60s by the way Subbed

No problem man! Theres very few turbo mopar street cars out there so I'm happy to see another one! Twin GT45s is a lot of air! Whats all done to the 318? Whats your horsepower goal?

It's standard bore with a forged 340 crank forged H beam rods and forged flat top pistons and I've got a comp cams thumpr cam edelbrock performer intake with the divider cut out and a mighty demon 750 blow thru carb and home ported heads with double valvesprings I'm hoping for 800 hp but...

Thats a good foundation. My 4.8 made 570 to the wheels on 21lbs. My old 5.3 would have made over 600 at the same boost level. But that was with stock everything minus the cam. Twin gt45s will get you there but the lag will be pretty bad. You'd be better off with smaller turbos like the gt35s for more response and they cap out at over 1000whp.

I should have watched this sooner but I definitely love seeing stuff like this. I made one change to the dart after the dyno day and now it’s an animal. I gotta get a new video done for it and hopefully in April we can get the cars together for Spring Fling.

Nice power from a 361, had one in a 63-sport fury convertible back in the mid-sixties. My currant 66 Satellite was an original 361 car. Had a nice 74 Charger but gave it to my daughter, she still has it. Who kicked in your fender?

@@nightwrencherperformance in theory rpm kills pistons before load does, but then again these are 1962 pistons with zero intended performance implications.

Water/meth will make up for the lack of intercooler and probably allow you to take it out to 18-20 degrees of timing and pick up huge amounts of torque.

I think you're right, we're also looking to switch over to E85 as well. I also want to add an intercooler but finding the space is a little difficult

Shouldn't a big block with after market heads be making at least 450 to 500 hp N/A.....What compression are you running? Running a bigger Should open that big block up and make more hp.

The 361(5.9L)big block was at around 9.2:1. Factory it made 305hp or 225 to the wheels. After a cam swap and upgrades, the engine made 295whp. Final numbers were 485whp on 14psi which is a little low but if you check the following videos, the engine was already tired, tons of blow by, worn out cyls, etc. Now the engine has 7 broken pistons. Thats all she wrote.

@@nightwrencherperformance Honestly I would try and go with the newer hemi's like the 3rd gen if you want to stay with dodge but if not go with the LS engines the after market support is great for both engines and the LS engines you won't even to open up the bottom end to make big hp. Just get a LS 5.3 or a 6.0 cam headers and intake and put your turbo that you have on it....with a LS 5.3 or 6.0 and with your turbo you should be pushing 600/700 hp to the tires Especially when you put a big camshaft and good intake on it... ...you can look up on KZfaq a guy named (Richard Holdener) he does a lot of Dyno testing with almost every engine and combo you can think of but you could watch some of his videos and pick out a engine combo that he's tested which is great because he's pretty much took all the guessing of what works and what doesn't work out of the Equation.....man I'm Curious of what you'll go with I would like to see what it'll put down.....Good luck with everything hope it goes well..

Its rated for 800bhp so if I keep turning up the boost, I should be able to make 650-700whp. If I need to make more than that, I'll go twin turbo instead
