LONG VIDEO WARNING! As with most of my videos I like to show the entire process so that you can feel free to skip around if you feel like it but not miss anything in the process - I did skip some of the tedious soldering :) But in this video I will show you how I built my own punching and kicking meter to measure the impact of my strikes!

Fyi, gym weights are notorious for not being all that accurate. You'd actually need competition-grade ones for competitions. But it's still gonna get you a decent calibration for your force meter anyway

You could use interrupts rather than a loop to increase the measurement frequency because it's faster that way on an arduino. But not sure they actually works om i2c. Might be limited to digital and analog in. Any faster microcontroller would also do the same trick

Love the video. I didn't think it was possible to make one on your own. I got a punching bob doll I would love to use for this.

Thanks :) I'm too cheap to buy one - but I'm not afraid to TRY to make anything - I mean someone somewhere had to make the first one, right? we can too! :) you can cheat this one a little bit, if you push more than strike it'll give you a high number, so I need to rework the code to try and compensate for that, but I think adding an aspect of "time" should do it

@@HoarderOfHobbies your right. The snap and pull back is what matters. Ive ask my friends to punch bob as hard as possible and they keep punch pushing it. I hate seeing dampened hits.

dont they have a flexible sheet that can measure pressure? I saw that metal piece and I would be insane to kick that with full force. lol
@HoarderOfHobbies
@HoarderOfHobbies 3 жыл бұрын
@@Edgar-so9of when I looked at that stuff I thought that flexible one was more twisting and bending force - but there may be a lot of different ones out there - yeah I strapped this to my heavy bag which gave it some give but in the end I think something safer would probably be in order :)
@HoarderOfHobbies
@HoarderOfHobbies 3 жыл бұрын
@@Edgar-so9of it's deceiving because people FEEL like they are hitting harder when really they are just pushing :) I tell them - you don't want to push the bag back - you want to bend it in half ;) hehe

is it possible that you add another feature which is it will count how many punches you landed?

Yeah I think that would be pretty easy to do really

is it possible to ad like 6-8 sensors? and get the data on one screen, also is it possible to get the time deference between the different hits? thinking on building a dummy (bob) with legs to be able to do combinations and get data for every hit, also adding lights for reaction training would be awesome.
@HoarderOfHobbies
@HoarderOfHobbies Жыл бұрын
Something like that should be doable! I think I would try to find cheaper and lighter sensors though, it might be hard mounting these big sensors - but maybe if you didn't care as much about *accurate* pressure sensing, maybe something that had a decent range so you could determine a heavy hit vs light or something - sounds like a cool project! :)

@@HoarderOfHobbies if i have understand this correct there is different speeds of the sensor? (hz) or is this controlled by the amplifier? to get correct value it need to be 0.5khz-1khz if looking on other striking product using what thy call dynamic load sensors?
@HoarderOfHobbies
@HoarderOfHobbies Жыл бұрын
@@chali272 I *think* that's controlled by the amplifier, the load sensors themselves are fairly "dumb" devices I think - I could be wrong but it's worth looking into for sure - thanks

@HoarderOfHobbies ok, i have ordered some sensor, and started the construction of a heavy-duty "bob" im just hoping a arduino mega can handle 16 of this sensors ans still handel to have a high update from the sensors.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oqmdaLqarcrFXWQ.html Have you consider putting a accelerometer in the bag? Im assuming it can calculate speed and you can put into account of the weight of your bag and you? Im not sure about the whole physics to determine damage.

might a 1kN load cell be too small for such a project? I mean that the force of the blow could exceed its measuring capacity?
@HoarderOfHobbies
@HoarderOfHobbies 4 ай бұрын
Sounds like it would be too small? I think the 500kg one I used was right about the mid range of most people's ability to strike, but some elite striker could probably max mine out too!
@ioan.tiurean
@ioan.tiurean 4 ай бұрын
I think I expressed myself wrongly. Your load cell is perfect for this. I don't even think that someone can punch or kick with a force of 500 kg. I referred to the fact that I have a load cell of only 1kN, i.e. 100 kg, and I thought that there is a possibility (related to the supply voltage used) to record the values of a blow whose force exceeds its measurement capacity.

You can avoid the garbage characters by not resetting the Arduino by button but by simply having the button change a variable state that allows for a new reading. The boot-up sequence is finicky
