Area moment of inertia and mass moment of inertia have almost the same names. They are mathematically very similar to one another and are different examples of an idea that mathematicians have been using for hundreds of years. You'll see how they are very similar in concept and are even similar to ideas from statistics.

Nobody tells this in Strength of Materials classes. You have cured my insomnia caused by this confusion. Thanks a LOT!!!

To sum up this very helpful video: Both Area Moment of Inertia AND Mass Moment of Inertia are second moments, but Area Moment of Inertia is with respect to geometrical area (applications to beam deflection), and Mass Moment of Inertia is with respect to the mass (applications to angular momentum).

Area moment of inertia = area cross section resistance to bending, Mass moment of inertia = solid body resistance to rotation, Polar moment of inertia = objects resistance to twisting.

Moment in general means quantity multiplied by distance from a reference point. Second moment means that the distance is squared.

sir,plz help me to clear my doubts regarding the following questions.. 1Q-why we take only second moment as moment of inertia?why not 1st and 3rd? 2Q-m^2 indicates area,m^3 indicates volume,then what indicates m^4(units of moment of inertia with respect to area)?

If i increase the mass moment of inertia of a body and then reduce the area moment of inertia of the same body about a given axis then will the overall torque required to rotate a body increase or decrease?? Which one has the stronger effect and why???
@carultch
@carultch 2 жыл бұрын
Area moment of "inertia" has nothing to do with inertia, and has nothing to do with torque required to rotate a body. Torque required to give a body an angular acceleration, only depends on the mass moment of inertia. Area moment of "inertia" is a property that relates internal torque within a body, to the distribution stress within its fibers and the curvature as it deflects under linear-elastic loading. It has nothing to do with inertia and is entirely a property of geometry. The reason it is called "area moment of inertia" is that it has a lot of properties in common with mass moment of inertia. A more apt name for it, is second moment of area.
