The good people at Netflix and Alloy Entertainment have a brand new romance film for you starring Disney Channel alum Sofia Carson and Mr. 'Hasn't Been in a Good Movie Since Handsome Devil' Nicholas Galitzine, and it's DEFINITELY not supposed to make you want to join the US military or hate women. Good thing the army is always a force for good, right? Right?

From a military perspective, I can not emphasize how much this isn’t marriage fraud. Maybe if they forged the paperwork, but they didn’t. I’ve known people that married people they’ve known for 2 weeks. You literally do not need to love the person you marriage as long as they consent. Watching this movie had me curling into myself and wanting to die

A major timeline issue as well, Cassie flies a BLM flag on her balcony, while Luke is getting deployed to Iraq. The last troops to pull out of Iraq was in December of 2011. This film is marketed as “enemies to lovers”, which is the most deceptive ad- in that trope, people develop in their mentality and morals/values and that is how they fall in love. The fact that they are marketing this movie as that trope is scary. There was ABSOLUTELY NO character growth in either character and it seemed to imply that we should just “overcome differences” and love people for who they are. Luke literally votes for people that believe Cassie doesn’t deserve the insulin she needs to LITERALLY LIVE. His values and morals were the complete opposite of hers and it was quite concerning fundamentally. The entire film felt like Andrew Tate’s fan project- a horror film to modern women. I’m not saying there aren’t women that want to be housewives or homemakers (there truly are) but telling these women that have other values that their values don’t matter compared to conservative men is ridiculous. The military propaganda is getting ridiculous. The entire premise that the US military is some sort of heroic cult is laughable. So many unnecessary and predatory wars have been started by the US under the pretence of “saving or liberating” and the fact that this movie paints the opposite image is horrifying. I’m not only concerned about the poor young girls that romanticise this movie but also for the young American boys that will believe the lies and propaganda of this movie and want to get into the army. It is heartbreaking and shocking that it is being so glorified in the media. The men in this film are not only racist and sexist but also have a god and hero complex.

What's also frustrating (you know, on top of all the clearly bad stuff) is that the writers are so dumb they introduced like 3 or 4 things that if explored could have made the movie better, like there were a few things that already happen in the story that they could have used to make Luke realize that at least some of his beliefs were too idealized and that Cassie wasn't so wrong in you know, wanting people to have rights and means to survive. Things such as the friend dying or his injury and how the military deals with those could have been used for him to come around like 'hmm, maybe this isn't a perfect institution that can never be criticized', but instead they make him learn zero things and only she has to let go of her beliefs to accept this man as he is, with all his racism, misogyny and possible homophobia.

I was heavily contemplating going into the military when I was in high school, and my dad sat me down and had a conversation with me about different experiences he'd heard women talk about while being overseas. and then proceeded to play 'devils advocate' and say that he doesn't 100% believe that those events happened, but I do appreciate the warning he gave me as it ultimately helped me decide against going in.

@@xXnymphXx Not just overseas, but state side as well. 2 percent of female and 0.7 percent of male service members experience sexual assault in the USA military, mostly service members who are young, just entering the military, or being transferred to a new duty station are particularly vulnerable. I don’t doubt sexual assume happens anywhere in the world (I know South Korea has a big issue with it, especially people using spy cameras on woman), but it’s bad enough it happens state side,

I admire and repsect people who enlist. Unfortunately, there's stuff that is swept under the rug. I got separated from Navy bootcamp training in 2019 when I was 18 for anxiety. Was put in a holding place called Separations to wait to go home. two hundred recruits who lost their minds, got injured during training, failed their PFT etc. Crazy asf. We all lived in the same giant compartment like a normal division, but it felt like bootcamp turned into an old insane asylum. The people watching us tried their best to make it better for us (most of them), but the situation was mentally traumatic. Was in there for 21 days and I'm lucky to say that. Some kids spend longer in Seps. Talked a couple of my Seps buddies out of S-word months after getting home. Nobody gives a sh!t lmao. Nobody from Seps is a veteran so none of us qualify for health benefits that could include mental health help. Even if we could I wouldn't except it. The military is not romantic. These movies make me cringe, and even at the slightest sight of camo or mention of the military, a part of me is sent back to Seps

yeah same here i dont know if anyone will see this but i honestly fet really ashemed for being seperated. (my story) I signed up for the marine corps in highscool, basically went to meps and went to PT twice a week at my recuriters office. think rotc but less discipline and no uniforms. My recuriter told me i hd to want it. Thats how they get you they target young guys with nothing but teststerone and the news telling them they will have no life in a dead end job. So my dumbass enlisted and aslo i should note your recurter can get you to PFC which is one rank above private if you "persuade one or two fellows to follow you" i wish i was kidding about that. While i was still in scool and couldent go to boot yet i was doing that two days a week pt and with that which was called (delayed entry program ). Anyways to shorten the story i shipped to boot at MCRD in san diego we got off the bus got immeditly ripped to shreds verbally. and you know ypical stuff "you are now property of the us government speel" so with that about two weeks in i was dropped due to a medical illness that prevented me from completing trainin. i was put into something similar to seps but it was called in the mare coprs RSP recruit seperation process. so to shorten it i was told to A. kill myslef almost everyday at the mess while eating. B withheld food because i was not essential. basically whole platoon cut infront of us that was in training still andwe were told since we werent in traing anymore they coud give a hit less. yeah i went a whole day with out eating becasue that happend three times in a row funny right. american heroes. C. clean officers huts or rooms and the head while being berated and funnily enough the only nice things said were "hey maybe you can still join the army" Ah yes becasue i want to support the govermnet more when it is littely making scrub shit off a toilet wiht my bare hand for a illness i cant control. Funny side not but my rack mate was this kid from alska who scared the shit out of me. Said hed "get the butter " if i ever snored" yeah thats funny talk for grape time with out the g. and like the this guy said we didnt get benefits which i do think is fair i wouldent accept it but what will agree with him on is basically every thing he said propsto you bro hope you see this even though its been a year. If you are reading this please do yourslef a favor go to a community colege apply for financial aid and live your life unless your are littelry hiomeless or financilay destitue your have options. I had a good freind of mine once say "uncle sam is your baby dayy" and yeah thats pretty accurate. id write more bt im glad to see other people are more open about seperatin in training im tired of hearing teenagers who are joing and brainwahsed talking about what pussies peole like us are but they havent even enlisted yet and dont know the half of it. yeah mentally traumatic is putting it nicely.

a childhood acquaintance of mine is on a brief hiatus from the airforce due to failing a test of some sort. he plans to apply for a different job within the airforce in a bit. however, a helicopter took off to close to him once, so his hearing is damaged and he might apply for disability? i asked him recently if it (the military) was worth it, and he kind of laughed and said no. like i truly don't understand how he thinks this is a good route for him, but his dad was in the military, and i think that's why it's something he continues to pursue. honestly, i hope he fails again and is forced to pursue something else. as much as i feel this movie's propaganda is dangerous to women who might accept men like this, i also worry about young men and teens who aren't taught to question the military and governments. i can't imagine how anyone would want to enter into that with the knowledge of how much the US military doesn't actually give a shit about them.

That being said, I’m not at all shocked that this came from a book packaging company and seems to be made to pander to the booktok crowd, and that said crowd is absolutely eating this shit up. I have a love/hate relationship with Booktok, primarily because of the way they’ve sort of latched onto/hype up Colleen Hoover and her books, despite them often featuring toxic and borderline (sometimes more than borderline) abusive men. I have a sneaking suspicion that this movie and the Cinderella movie is Nicholas Galatzine’s managers attempt to butch him up. He has done 3 roles (maybe 4), where he plays Gay/Queer characters. He’s not public with any relationships in general, but obviously not one with a female. And as a young REALLY goodlooking young up and coming leading male, this is particularly problematic. Not to say that he is or is not Queer in real life, but obviously Hollywood is not as progressive as the films they make tend to sometimes be, and Queer actors still face issues with typecasting and black listing. So I wonder what if anything that had to do with him taking on such a role, as he’s not even American himself.

I agree with everything you're saying but I also want to say that Most of These toxic tropes you Talk about are also shown and romanticised in Kissing Booth. So you're talking about immpressionable young Girls but the Kissing Booth (toxic angry Male behavior, sexism etc) Shows These Things as Well. But you're very correct, the Ideological issue in this movie is an actual Dangerous issue and while Kissing Booth has its Problems as Well, the later Movies handle them better and If anything the real Danger lies in Movies Like "After" that try to make abuse Look "Hot". I really enjoy your Video and as someone from Germany, the Stuff about burn pits really shocked me.

I guess, but also The Kissing Booth does not glorify things like the military, the US healthcare system, or this idea of 'conservative man tames liberal woman' (which was the point of this video more than the general toxicity of the relationship.) I also think, while obviously yes the relationship in tkb is toxic, it's worth acknowledging that those movies are so much more ridiculous and light-hearted than this. They do not beg to be taken seriously like this one does. Not saying what they depict is okay or that it has no impact on impressionable viewers, but I do think the over-the-top comedic fantasy escapism is kind of a different animal than this dead serious romantic drama. Also to be clear, I never said I defend the Kissing Booth/don't think it's bad, just that I enjoy it. Glad you liked the vid!

All I can say about #4 is that when my friend’s kid was watching this in the background my wife told me, of the music scenes, “I’ve never been more jealous that you’re Deaf.”

I love hearing people who weren’t in talking about all the horrific information about the military in complete shock. As a veteran, this is like an every day thing. This is only scraping the surface. This kind of situation happens all the time. All the time.

I'm glad you didn't hold back here, Jane. I hate pro-military media in general, but this has several additional layers of cringe. Needless to say, I won't be watching, lol.
