hey, I just wanted to add here that while I wasn't really tuned into Camila Cabello's past racist posts and whatnot before making this video, I did look into it today and wow! it's pretty bad! I say in the vid that I have no strong opinion on Camila, so I wanted to clarify that I definitely abhor her racist behavior and I completely understand people who are swearing off the movie and/or Camila herself because of it.

It's funny because in the time period when Cinderella is supposed to take place, women weren't forbidden of work. Women of mid-lower classes sometimes had small local businesses, especially selling clothes, and in agricultural places, they were as well working in the fields along with men. Now, speaking of the high class and the monarchy, women had ruling power and positions, both in the gov and church, so the film tries to say absolutely nothing of substance. Sexism was and still is very real but there more aspects of it than being able to run a local store with fabric etc. Willfully ignoring this very part of history in order to push a "girlboss agenda" does only harm to feminism, because it's erasing all the great things women did or participated in through history.

I do not like what they are doing with these princess adaptions. With the exception of the Disney cinderella remake, there is this idea that these characters' fundamentals need to be fixed. As if kindness, patience, and having hope is a flaw. I can not forget how Lindsey Ellis's video about Ariel really made realize, "Ariel did not 'change herself for a man'. He just happened to be the catalyst for her already established interest in the land." This Buzzfeed Feminism that we see so popularized has even flooded into everyday conversations I have with people where they criticize Disney princesses but not for their lack of diversity in faces, bodies, and relationships, etc. but for the fact that the girls can't take a punch. Camilla's new cinderella falls right in line with a questionable lead as well (I ain't forget about that tumblr mess and what was done to Normani). Amazing video by the way!! You have a new subscriber.

exactly!! there are completely valid things to criticize about disney’s princesses, but everyone just judges them on whether or not they wield a weapon or have a love interest. it’s frustrating because it seems like disney thinks that’s the thing they need to change now, so we get a bunch of ‘self referential humor’ in their films making fun of needing a man to save you when that was never the problem to begin with.

What bothers me is how it kinda downgrades the original Cinderella movie as if she wasn’t strong enough and just another lady awaiting her guard in shining armour when it actually is a story about a girl that went though years of abuse and yet remained kind and forgiving. Unfortunately we are facing a time where entitled people got the wrong grasp of feminism and what it means to be a woman to the point that women that fit even the “stereotype” (in case, getting married and being a queen) even if a little are seen as less than the so called woke ones, it kinda gives me the “not like other girls” vibe. Also, gotta love how everything she wants to do are thing woman could actually do back in the time. Like, dude, at least make her a blacksmith wannabe or smth.

Great analysis! I think this is why I greatly prefer the Drew Barrymore Cinderella movie. It actually talks about poverty and criminality in the context of systemic corruption (Drew's Cinderella has a whole back and forth with the prince while she's trying to save a fellow farm worker from being an indentured servant and discusses how criminality is the product of a lack of resources and education stemming from an incompetent government) and Cinderella isn't a cookie cut person. One of her stepsisters are beautiful whilst Cinderella is not as conventionally pretty, and she's very witty and quick on her feet. It's not a perfect movie by any means, and there are still some messages that I think are outdated, but by far I feel like it really delves into Cinderella's character more and addresses larger issues.

The nerdiest thing about me is my love of fairytales/folklore and my subsequent knowledge of them; so I’ve seen/read ALOT of versions of Cinderella. It is still the most popular fairy tale in the world and pretty much every culture has had some story which could be interpreted as “Cinderella”. What I find interesting about this movie is that it is making a choice to address capitalism and the accumulation of wealth. But literally the one thing that is true about ALL versions of Cinderella is that she is poor (a “commoner”) and is offered an opportunity to accumulate wealth and improve he status by marrying a wealthy person (usually a prince). She doesn’t just get to reject or consider rejecting the prince’s offer without considering that marrying him would mean she would not longer have to worry about having her basic needs meet. And most of the time Cinderalla is written to be a kind generous person so she would also have to consider the ways in which she can help others. A business minded “girl boss” has even less of a reason to reject his offer because being a famous princess would not only be good for businesses it would means she has the funds to facilitate that business. If you want to do a feminist take, set them on equal footing at the start or do like Into the Woods and write her to be disinterested in the prince but tempted by the ways in which he can improve her life.

Cinderella was kind and selfless, she would have accepted the prince's marriage proposal and convince the Prince to make changes. I mean, gwenn is already intent on making radical changes in their policies basing from her talks with their dad. I just hate how they attribute being nice and finding love to being weak or dependent somehow. You can be independent and still care about love. Also I wish movies would stop trying to fix issues of the past. Like yes women had certain roles back then and didn't have much of a say in many things. A movie made in 2021 is not going to undo that. They could've just made a new princess in a modern time period rather than shit on Cinderella

Historically fashion design was just sewing bespoke orders. Celebrity fashion designers really didn't make their mark until the mid 20th century. There were a handful of exceptions that we can name but even if sewing for royalty it meant obscurity, and presiding over a work room paying sewisrs poverty wages, 16 hour work days with bad lighting, and charging your staff for broken needles and cuts of thread. I know Cinderella isn't historically accurate but for each famous designers there are 10000s tailors and dressmakers who are barely getting by.

I still stand by Ever After as the best Cinderella film because Danielle was actually an empowering heroine. She was strong-willed, outspoken, and intelligent, but also highly affected by her stepmother’s emotional abuse and it was her escape from said abuse that made us root for her. She didn’t need to be a girlboss in order to be a feminist character. It was the fact that she rescued herself from abuse that made her a feminist character.

I think if any studio wants to "subvert" the story of Cinderella, they should try to expand/change the other aspects of the story instead of trying to make Cindy more "modern." Maybe make a story where the Step Mother is kind until her true colors get revealed after the ball. Or maybe one where the king is a cruel one, forcing his son to get married just to give him in a heir, and then trying to find and kill the girl who snuck into the ball, pushing the prince to find the girl who fit the slipper before his father does, and having Cinderella ultimately "save" the prince from the evil king and maybe liberating the kingdom. Like there's so many ways to go about it, despite every modern retelling feeling like "Cinderella doesn't need no man 😎"

Hey! I love love love this video! Just a quick note though, Monarchy's themselves are not patriarchal - the Indus Valley civilisations all started out Matriarchal, but we still had Monarchy's. The reason women weren't allowed to rule in ancient India was to check their power- while women hold the power in every home, even a Monarchs wife isn't allowed to interfere with political decisions; and so, a ruler has no excuse when it comes to fulfilling their job as Monarch. And because Monarchs in ancient India retired from the throne (its was purely a job because materialism(riches) take you away from spiritualism - King's retired from the positions they were born into, so they too could have a chance at salvation like everyone else in the world), it's not like a King could act different within his family unit, simply because he is King. If anyone is interested in more about how monarchies in Matriarchal countries worked- the Mahabharata is an Indian Epic about a great king who's only weakness was not seeing the flaws in one his own children. One bad succession decision plunged the India of the Epic into chaos for generations. - It was a cautionary tale to remind Kings of India, that while they are on the throne, all citizens of their country should be equal to their own children; and even a moment of emotional discrepancy can doom the rest of their children forever, if they aren't lucky enough for one of their descendants to end up being a better adjusted ruler than they were. It's quite a brutal, yet honest, and epic tale!

I hate criticism of old disney movies because it's always so 2000's shallow... "X princess had a man save her" yeah, and he was royalty and now that girl is going to be queen. Princess movies are marketed at young girls who love princess aesthetics and finding her romantic knight in shining armour. It's romance, it's cute. Snow White had met the prince for like 2 minutes of entire movie run time. The movie was about Jealousy and how it can make people very bitter. Snow White was cast out of her CASTLE that she was PRINCESS OF, found a seemingly abandoned cottage and said "fuck it, i'll live here then" and made the best of a situation. Cinderella was an abuse victim, tormented since childhood to be the slave of the family who her father accepted into the home. She took the message of be kind and gentle and eventually good things will come. She got her wish, one night away from the abuse and had a great time and would hold onto that memory for many more years to come. But she didn't need to because the Prince was smitten with her and even HE found love at first sight. It wasn't just about Cinderella. Both of these princesses ended up with a man at the end who "saved" them from the overall plot going on. But the characters themselves go through traumatic events that they perserve throough. How is this NOT empowering? "Hey young girl? just because life is really shit right now, doesnt mean it will always be like that. Push through it and things can turn out good" Nah sorry, the only way to empower women these days is to tell them "be basic looking, dont be interested in GIRL things like BOYS and body image! no no no, you must MUST own a business and reject help"

*No spoilers here.* The debate about the lack of originality in Hollywood productions has taken a new turn with CINDERELLA 2021. Am I saying that because it's based on a story that has already been brought to the big (and small) screen several times? No, I'm saying that because it tries to justify its existence by being a musical (combining original songs and covers) with a feminist angle, a diverse cast, current slang and self-aware jokes... but there have already been other adaptations that have done those things. Hell, some of the old radio hits have already been used in other jukebox musicals unrelated to this fairy tale! And the big irony is that the best scenes are the ones without any novelty. The ones that don't try to deconstruct, subvert or modernize anything. The ones that play everything straight. The title character being surrounded by magic as she gets a new dress, her dancing at the ball with Prince Robert, Queen Beatrice telling King Rowan how she really feels, etc. That's not to say there aren't any comedic moments that work, but they're not very frequent. In fact, James, John and Romesh (the mice) serve as comic relief and they're annoying! I couldn't enjoy the tenderness between Cinderella and Robert as they were walking outside the palace, because the movie kept cutting back to that trio doing dumb shit! Another major change to the story is the Fairy Godmother. They cast Billy Porter and he introduces himself as... the Fabulous Godmother. I added the ellipsis to the sentence so you'd have time to prepare yourselves before reading about this mind-blowing idea. It's as if humanity's concept of creativity was wrong all along and only now have we discovered the truth. Kidding aside, credit where credit is due, because he first appears as a butterfly and then transforms into a human, and I incorrectly predicted that he was going to wear fake wings. I appreciate the restraint. After all, even movies that are campy on purpose must have limits. Still, if you're not going to change the second part. of the name to Godfather (which I don't have a problem with), then why bother changing the first one? Why can't this gay man refer to himself as a fai--Ohhhh... Never mind. Over the past 10 years or so, I've seen musicals rely on auto-tune and it's infuriating! You would think that was going to happen again in the deliberately cheesy and light-hearted vehicle for a pop star. However, we get to hear Camila Cabello's voice in all its... Well, I can't really say "glory," because it sounds breathy and husky. That's usually reserved for dramatic musicals, because that way, the actor can express raw emotions, so it feels out of place here. That being said, it's still technically good singing. Not to mention how charismatic she is as an actress (despite not having any prior experience). None of the new compositions stand out and the new renditions (some are classics, others are quite recent) have very particular arrangements. Instead of performing the songs just as they are, winds and strings are employed to give each track a period piece sound. While it wasn't necessary for the atmosphere (after all, this is a fantasy setting), it does give the soundtrack its own identity. Also, it shows that writer/director Kay Cannon's priority wasn't pandering to the crowd that isn't interested in something that's not hip. The songs themselves sound good, but there are points where the actors are instructed to sing 1 or 2 verses differently. That doesn't work if the rhythm and the melody remain the same. I know that every music genre has its origins, but because of the different levels of sub-genres that have developed over the centuries, there are plenty of cases where the listener won't associate a composition with a culture in particular. That's what happens with most of the musical numbers here... so it's odd to make Jennifer López's LET'S GET LOUD (with its strong Latin American roots) the finale. That would've made more sense in a full-on Hispanic re-telling of the fairy tale. 4/10

Hey if you want a Cinderella who's a hard working woman but not a stereotypical fashion designer, the 'Lunar Chronicles' series' main character- Cinder- is a mechanic! The Lunar Chronicles is actually pretty good at the fractured fairytale thing imo, and the main character lives in Asia and is probably Asian (it's... not clear, but that's what everyone draws Cinder as even tho there's other complications for it??? idk. I like to imagine her as an Asian character too but I do acknowledge that's it's not exactly canon)

Without being a demanding wannabe-girlboss, but with patience, hope and kindness; and some helpers, of course, as friends are important, too. This 2021 Cinderella literally demanded to be allowed to work. And you're right. Fashion is just such a cliche... And why always Cinderella? Why not doing a modern fairy tale with some other "strong women", there are plenty fairy tales with more clever and self-made characters.....

Yeah I agree. This movie fell flat, especially considering how many adaptations there have been. Most of the female characters are not even really given any substance. Actually I would argue that none of the characters truly are. And step family was actually pretty nice to Cinderella (who never even had cinder on her face so the nickname makes no sense), they let her do what she wanted and left her alone most of the time. There was real growth stemming from the fact that no one ever goes through any real tough times. And Ella is handed everything instead of working hard for it and making it on her own.

In all fairness (which does not seem to be as talked about) stories fr that era focused on men, typically end in the men getting married too. Admittedly, he usually has to go through some sort of bravery or intelligence character arc, but marriage was kind of the height of life if you were a single young adult in the medieval to victorian age. Given the suggested size of Cinderella's estate, having her want to become an architect would be pretty on brand I think.
